I compiled and installed the latest samba 3.0.0rc1. I see that the binary executable was placed in the default location of /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd. However, I cannot located the default smb.conf file. I was expecting that the 'make install' script would have copied this file somewhere onto my system. Where is the default 'smb.conf' file located?

Using winbind for authentication through PDC. Problem: Some users do not get access to the samba share and some do. When I do "wbinfo -u" the users who cannot access show up but when I do "getent passwd", they are not there. The source code seems to compile fine but when I try to join the NT4 domain I get a broken pipe error and it stops. The command I am using is smbpasswd -j (whatever) -r ( whatever) -U ( whatever). To replace failing Windows Server, I configured the Linux one. The two services I need are DNS and WINS, so I installed Bind9 and Samba. But I see that Samba is far from compact, its installation requires Perl + Python. I do not need to share resources with shis server too. In result, I got 900M on HDD. Are there a way to install NMBD only? Without (or with as least as possible) extra packets.

I have set an alias, and it shows up in Network Neighborhood, but when I try to open it a pop-up window says it is not accessible, "The network path was not found." The primary name works fine however. Any suggestions? Thank you.
