SV: using samba to backup NT to unix tape drive ?
Hi!
My suggestion: Use Amanda (www.amanda.org, cd /usr/ports/misc/amanda24 && make install with FreeBSD).
It has support for smbtar. Haven't tried it myself, but I hear it's working fine. (I think I have seen a patch for gnu tar, that fixes the path length limit. I'm sure, though...)

can some people point to me to good tape backup and software...
Hi all,
Being recently new to Samba. I want to know what some of
you consider a really good tape backup. And, what software to run
it with. I want to be able to offer customers daily full backups that
the restores will work well with Samba. My understanding is
smbtar only uses tar. Is there something even web based I can
use. (for the guy just getting out to new small networks..and not to

Command to get tape capacity status?
I have an Overland tape library connected, via SCSI card, to an
out-of-box, full install of C5 install on an old PC.
I have a script that uses tar to archive data to tape and mtx to change
tapes. What I don't know, if possible, is to obtain the status of how
much tape is left in the drive. If I get a write failure, I'd like to
know if the tape is bad or has run out of space.

Hierarchial storage management or automated archival to tape
Hi list!
While regular backup solutions like amanda or bacula are very good at
their job, ie keeping point2point copies of the files currently on
disk, I find them less suited for archiving - having unused files move
to tape in duplo and stay there until requested. I've even read of
multi-tier solutions - move to slower disks after a week and further
on to tape after a month.
Does anyone

I've taken you as far as I can go. ?Now you will have to experiment a
bit for your use case. ?I should point out that at least in my system,
the link with the serial number in it shows up even with the line
commented in the rules file.
As always, YMMV.

persistent generic device for tape changer
Hello,
mtx and therefor amanda use generic device /dev/sg<x> for tape changer.
These devices change on reboot.
How to make them persistent?
/dev/sch0 and /dev/sch1 seem to be persistent.
/dev/tape/by-id/ shows links from WWID to generic device
An UDEV rule could help? I have not found any example.

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ernie,
Thanks for the great info.. Based on what you were seeing, would
you suspect that part of the problem is with the combination of NT
and the 3com card (3c595)? Currently, we are ONLY seeing this
under NT Workstation (not server) and almost all of our machines
have this same 3com 3c595 card (only if using 100BaseT)..

persistent generic device for tape changer
Hello Ron,
sounds good. I have 2 tape changer. I persume, udev creates the same
link for both.
Can I modify
SYMLINK+="changer-$env{ID_SERIAL}"
The serial should be unique.

Using Amanda + Samba to backup NT4 servers?
Hi all,
Has anyone used amanda in combination with samba to back up an NT4 server
system?
I'm able to connect to the server with both smbclient and smbtar on the
command line, but I can't get amanda to connect. Supposedly amanda uses
smbclient and smbtar to perform the backups.
I'm continually getting the following error from amcheck:
ERROR: amanda: [PC SHARE //servername/share

Sharing TAPES ?
Hello!
Is it possible to make a tape attached to unix host visible
to windows PCs via Misrosoft's protocol?
Now our users should telnet to the unix station and use smbtar.
They want to use backup utilities from Windows. Is it possible?
Sincerely,

Need help diagnosing ERRbadfile messages
Hi all,
I posted this to the list a few weeks ago but got no response. I'm
running Amanda and smbtar and trying to back up some files on a Windows
2000 machine. I've verified that the files it's trying to back up are
NOT open and permissions are fine for it to be backed up.

I assume you are using smbtar to back up each NT's C: while NT is booted off
that drive, any problem there.

Lots of ERRbadfile and Expected SMBtrans2 responses with smbclient
Hi all,
I am using Amanda and smbtar for backing up Windows machines.
However, in addition to the errors I get on open files (which is to be
expected), I am getting errors on files that should be fine to access.
Here is a snippet from the Amanda log which contains smbclient errors:

recommneded tape drives
Hi there, I am pricing out a dell 840 (low end file server) that will
run latest centos.
Can anyone recommend a good tape drive/card combo with centos? The
drives (to be backed up) in it will be a raid 0 - 500gb.
Thanks in advance!

OCFS and backups to tape
Hi,
we have installed ocfs2 on Rhat 4. It is being used as a general
clustered file system. There are no oracle binaries or datafiles on the
ocfs volume. So no need for RMAN or oarcle agents etc etc.
The customer would like to backup the volume using arcserve. However CA
are saying that they cannot backup from an ocfs volume.
Has anyone out there got any words of wisdom about backing up
