“bio too big” regression and silent data corruption in 3.0
tl;dr version: 3.0 produces “bio too big” dmesg entries and silently corrupts data in “meta-raid1/data-single” configurations on disks with different max_hw_sectors, where 2.6.38 worked fine. tl;dr side-issue: on-line removal of partitions holding “single” data attempts to create raid0 (rather than single) block groups. If it can''t get enough room for raid0 over all remaining disks, it

big file server
Hi I plan to set up a big file server, something like motherboard with 4 ide ports and an additional 4 ide daughter card, a PIV proc and 512 or 1024 MB ram, a 100 or 1000 MB NIC, with 6 or 7 200 GB ide HDDs in a sigle box. I don't need lightning performance, just disk space. Of course this would be served by some linux os and samba questions (relative to samba configuration and behaviour) :

1 minute wait on a share / call_trans2qfsinfo takes 60 seconds
Hi I have a linux mdk 8.0 w/ custom 2.4.19-16 kernel, acls, quotas etc I have a samba 2.2.7 serving several shares on LVs everything's fine but with one share : whenever a windows client accesses this share his file manager is locked out for exactly one minute. this happens when the client requests the directory listing (or when an automatic refresh takes place) i can't see any reason

[OT] Good Gigabit Ethernet Card ...
Greetings ... I hate to ask these questions, but I dought I will get a straight answer from an Salesmen ... I am looking at putting gigabit in as a back bone for a few Linux servers, but I have used an Accton Gigabit ethernet card with RedHat 8.0/9 and found it a little unstable ... do and RedHat users have a suggestion on a good, but not expensive Gigabit card, basicly for a Samba

user or group names with blanks
Hi I'm a happy user of samba since years I just d/l 2.2.6, configured it (w/ winbind), compiled and installed it It's working thought, i need to control access to some resources relatively to user's appartenance to some nt groups, and i intended to do this with "read list"/"write list" or "valid users". my problem is that some group names contain blanks

FYI : oplock problems
FYI, I'm setting up a file server for 1000 users based on mdk 8.0, self-compiled 2.4.19 + acl patches, self compiled samba 2.2.6, 100 Mbps NIC this server is right now in a pre-prod status and is currently used only by very few users while loading several +100 MB files on a share from a NT 4 wks 100 Mbps, we got several "session cancelled" messages, and un-killable D-state smbd

Documentation on Displaying Quotas
Hi John (and others on the list) Can I suggest that you add some information to the new Samba docs explaining how to make Linux (or I suppose other Unix) group quotas be reflected in My Computer and/or Explorer when a Windows user accesses a share that is supposed to controlled by a quota? Here was my particular situation this past week. I was setting quotas based on Linux groups. Each

The bfd library (used by ar and nm) already searches for plugins in $install_dir/lib/bfd-plugins/. Maybe we could pass an option to llvm's configure to tell it where

problems booting isolinux
Hello List, I have used isolinux for years without problems. Recently I decided to upgrade from 3.09 to 3.11. Every CD I create can be read on my Vectra (Pentium 3) and all other Pentium 3 boxes, but all my Pentium 4 boxes will not boot (they ignore the CD and boot from hard disk). The bochs VM will boot the CDs fine just like the Pentium 3 machines. I have tried 3.09 (which worked

Writing files > 2GB from Windows
Can anybody explain why SOME Windows XP applications have trouble writing files larger than 2 GB (or sometimes larger than 4 GB) to Linux Samba shares, when OTHER Windows applications on the same machine do not have difficulty writing large files to the same Samba share? And when the underlying Linux filesystem supports very large files? I have sometimes even found that a SINGLE Windows

SAMBA + ACLs + QUOTAs + WINBIND = headache
Hello I'm trying to set up a samba server on linux that will have ACL capability and QUOTA control. I'm working on a customized 2.4.18 kernel patched for EAs and ACLs, and quotas I've also customized a 2.2.3a samba with acls, winbind, quotas... it's working fine from a pure unix point of vue, acl allow fine grained access control, quotas limit use of space, and so on with samba
