WinXP clients connect slowly to Samba
Folks, Haven't been able to find any information on either issue. 1) We have Windows clients (primarily NT4sp6a and WinXP sp1) connecting to Samba servers, and it works fine but the connections are slow. They take 5-10 seconds whereas connections to native Windows servers are nearly instant. 2) The WinXP machines seem to disconnect the SMB session to the Samba servers ASAP rather than

XP clients regularly lose connection
Hi, We have Samba 2.2.8 on RedHat 9.0 (from rpm). We connect about 5 Win XP Professional PC's (with Service Pack 1) to the server. Roaming profiles are set up. After about 30 minutes client connections are lost to the server and the users cannot reconnect to the server, even if samba is restarted. A reboot of the server is required. This occurs, it seems at this stage, when large

Access denied
Hello, Samba 1.9.16p11 on Sun OS 5.6 For a NT4 Server SP4, I can not access to the samba server. When I look at the log.MachineName file, I see the error "password server not avalaible". I must say that it is working fine with an NT4 SP4 server on the same domain with the same user account. I have change the registry to authorize non-encrypted password. ...... Thanks. --

printer services
Hi: I have a question regarding printer support/services. Does Samba support shared printers directly attached to a Windoz or Linux machine? (i.e. attached via a parallel port or USB port to either the Samba machine or one of the Linux or Windoz boxes). If so, how does one configure Samba and/or the other network machines to configure the printers to make them reachable to the rest of the

regexpr and portability issue
Dear all-- I am still forging my first arms with R and I am fighting with regexpr() as well as portability between unix and windoz. I need to extract barcodes from filenames (which are located between a double and single underscore) as well as the directory where the filename is residing. Here is the solution I came to: aFileName <-

windoz client won't print
I am running SuSE6.3, kernel 2.2.13, samba 2.0.6, lprold3.0.48. I can print to the print server from my workstation (SuSE6.3) using lpr remote, but when my wife tries to print from her windows machine, the file goes to /var/spool/lpd/lj4dith-letter-auto-mono-600 and then just sits there. File sharing is working great, just having a problem printing. Everything was working great until I got the

Functioning Samba Install has one desktop causing a complaint ...
... On a LAN consisting of a box with Linux 2.4.21-138-smp using Samba version 2.2.5-UL, all the boxes can log in and see the shares (windoz xp, 2000, me - all smbpasswords set to none), except one that is windoz98. Attempts to connect get "IPC$" login messages. The box that gets the message has a directory/password/smbpassword (set to none) on the Linux machine. Is this due to the

Quickbooks revisited
I did testing on generating this report from a 130 MB Quickbooks file. Locally, 15 seconds. Samba Server, 1:35. Shared off of my win98 Workstation, 2+ mins. I do not understand the reason it is SOO slow. I know it is a fairly large file. The only explanation I can come up with is the way QuickBooks is accessing the files. Maybe jumping all around the file, requiring many operations on the

Death of dyndns
I'm running two servers, one with a fixed IP address and the other with a dynamic address. This is probably a very ignorant question, but what does dyndns do that I could not do myself? -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland

write permissions - chapter 2
hello all, I have been trying to run MS Windows and Excel under wine. They are about the only two remaining dependent Windoz apps The error they produce relates to write permissions. However that does not seem to be the root issue. Other apps, such as Notepad, seem to be able to write without issue. What is currently required in way of wine config to satisfy Word and Excel? Thanks in
