Rsync Performance In Windows
Has anyone else experienced high CPU usage when using RSYNC in windows 2000
server? I am using the rsync.exe (and applicable DLL's) from the cygwin
installation (I am not however running cygwin on this machine).
The linux machine connecting to the windows rsync daemon has a very low
performance hit when the session is running (see below). However, the
windows machine, which has a much

XP Joining Samba Domain
I have successfully joined the XP machine to the domain. The strange part
is, that it only wanted to be joined if it connected to the PDC and not the
BDC.
The way it is set-up is that the XP machine and a BDC is in one branch and
the PDC is in another. Every time I would try to connect via the BDC, it
would return a value ACCESS DENIED
I stopped the smb service on the BDC, and got it to

Samba/LDAP XP Authentication Weirdness
Samba 2.2.8a, RH7.3
I have successfully connected machines running XP to the samba controlled
domain.
There are 3 XP machines, each with only one user designated as a power user
(ie domain\username power user). Each can log into any of the three
machines without a problem.
Now I am trying to log a different person into any of these machines and I
get the message "System Could Not Log

windows file compatibility aka A Cry For Help
Everything is going amazing in the windows->samba conversion until I ran
into a roadblock..I really dont know what may be going on so I will outline
it as best as I can.
We have a program called realty toolkit which saves its configuration and
security settings onto the network. Well, after putting the files onto the
linux box, it no loger wants to work, the security check fails.

some issue restarting with a service smb restart in redhat 7.3..which seems
to answer my question as to why I have to do it twice...

smbpasswd question
Do you have to enable encrypted passwords for smbpasswd to work? I
have yet to enable encryption because I wanted to test everything
first, but have enabled 'update encrypted = Yes' so that this will
update the smbpasswd file. I also have 'unix password sync = Yes'.
However, I cannot get smbpasswd to change the passwords, either by
user or root. Any suggestions?

wins support = yes time server = yes
When I set:
wins support = yes
time server = yes
my wins service stops working and no computers show up in the network
neighborhood..as soon as I change time server = no, they start to
re-populate.
I have looked around and havent found a definitive answer (apologies if I
overlooked it)...
but if someone could tell me if this is a documented issue, or just me that
woudl be great
Thanks

WINBIND configuration and NT Authentication
Setup:
Suse 7.2, Samba 2.2.6
Win 2K PDC
Project:
I would like to use winbind to authenticate users that do not have local
accounts on the linux machine for access to various file and print shares.
I have gotten winbind to successfully grab the user and groups from the NT
box (verified by getent passwd). However, I have had little luck obtaining
the permission based file share that I would

'point-and-print' general questions
I have gotten 'point-and-print' working, but there are a couple small
issues/questions I am trying to get my grasp around:
- rpcclient print-1201 -U root%secret -c 'enumdrivers'
this lists the drivers twice (I saw one other post about this,
without any followup)
- When adding drivers via the Windows APW, after uploading the drivers
and the APW closing - are you supposed to

Which distribution to rollout
we are running an older version of RH (7.3) - and I am getting
concerned that I may need to migrate off of it - but I dont know what
I should move to. Trying to formulate ideas before it becomes a 'got
to do it now' scenario.
I have some reservations about fedora - I just dont know how stable it
is for a production server (our services are mainly
samba/ldap/ntp/ssh/rsync/clamav) - we

samba & rsync
If anyone has time to look at this problem I would appreciate it.
I think I am looking for a way to increase the "timeout" in samba (in the
smb.conf file)
for reporting a "down" link or "can't read xyz file".
However I am writing to you folks because this problem has come up while
using rsync

Annonymous access guest ok = yes
I am trying to get some printer shares to be anonymous access.
I have set guest ok = yes
but from the log file, it looks like if a username is passed, and a failed
lookup, it wont just default to annonymous. Is there another setting or
configuration that I need to add to get it to work?

WINBIND configuration and NT Authentication]
Hi,
Yes it's possible to authenticate users from win 2000 server with
winbind. For me
the PAM configuration was the hardest part. I used mandrake 9 and it has
a realy
good pre config. And if you want to modify the folder/file permissions
from NT/W2k
PDC then don't use ReiserFS as the filesystem. Use either EXT3 or XFS.
Mayby the
ReiserFS 4 will have the ACL support.

joining an NT PDC, WinNT user privileges
Hi,
I've been looking for this information, but I couldn't find it
anywhere.
I have a samba (2.2.3) on debian (woody) and I mean to configure this
server with winbind so it can authenticate domain users. The PDC is at a
NT server.
My question is is very simple ... what are the *exact* privileges I
need to give the user I use to join the domain? Winbind docs says use

to do a hard reboot without a shutdown, etc.
There is 40 plus gigs on the backup, so I dont think a tar and copy would be

smbpasswd via cgi
using samba and ldap - redhat 7.3
trying to work on a short cgi to update samba password (it is a url with
attributes username and password). I am not very good at all with perl, so
if someone can take a quick ponder and help me out, that would be great.
I think that it fails in theory however, because to change other users
password, you need to be root ... So I was wondering if anyone knows
