Inefficient Winbind behavior? Not sure if it posted 1st time.
Hello all,
I'm having an issue with Winbind and I'm not sure if it's occurring by
design or not.
My Samba server resides in a Windows NT domain and uses winbindd to
authenticate to a mixed-mode 2003 domain over a trust relationship.
Everything works the way it ought to. However, every so often my users
experience delays of anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds when connecting to a
share,

Thanks for the response, Jerry.
Is there a way for me to verify this is happening?
Winbindd has been running for a few days now, and I just did a netstat and
the only connections to a DC are to the off-site one, the PDC.
Thanks.
Sven

Please assist with Winbind issues!
Hello,
I've been trying for a couple of weeks now to get Samba to authenticate via Winbind to an NT domain. I've scoured Google and the mailing lists to no avail. I've tried various configurations that I've found during my searches, but none of them have worked for me.
I need to be able to authenticate users, that do not have an account on the Linux box, against the NT domain,

Replacing WinNT 4 PDC with Samba PDC
Hi All!
Thanks to all of you that responded to my previous posts. I've gotten a lot
more info now than I used to have!
But I still have questions. The biggest right now is: Is there a way build
up a Samba PDC as a direct replacement for an existing Windows NT 4.0 PDC?
All the material I've found to date is written from a standpoint of creating
a new domain as you create the Samba

cross subnet browsing over IPSec
Hi all!
This is a repost to this list, hoping to draw some extra attention
because I got NO reply whatsoever to the original posting :( I would
really appreciate if someone could comment om which of both strategies
as described below is best.
I am having some trouble with a samba domain distributed over 2 subnets
(192.168.0.0/23 (supernetted) & 192.168.4.0/24). These subnets are

Autentication against BDC first
Hi all, I have this question, I ve got a master LDAP server on a remote
place and i want to install a PDC and a BDC and a slave ldap server in
other place.
Mi question is... may I force de WorkStations logging (read the
information )against the BDC first than PDC, so the READ trafic goes to
the Slave Ldap??? The problem is the network avoid READ traffic.
In the Samba FAQ recomends that the:

Samba + LDAP over the WAN
Since we're on the subject of Samba over the WAN....
(BTW, I'm running three offices with a Samba 3.0.9 PDC and two Samba 3.0.9 BDCs over an FreeSwan based WAN and it works just fine. The WINS server is a must in my book though.)
Last Thursday and Friday, one of the remove office's WAN lines went down. While the outages were significant, nothing major happened because of it. But,

Samba PDC in many branch offices + one LDAP database - how to change passwords?
Hello,
I just configured Samba 3 PDC + LDAP.
The aim is to have a Samba 3 PDC + LDAP in each branch office; and there
should be one user/password database.
There are about 20 branch offices in different locations and users
travel a lot between them with laptops.
Each branch office has a below configuration:
- Samba 3 PDC
- slave OpenLDAP server
There is also one central user/password

PDC/BDC without WINS
Hello,
Our company is trying to implement central Windows Domain at HQ and
replicated across all its regional offices. The implementation will
have a PDC/LDAP-master on HQ and BDC/LDAP-slave on each regional
office.
In the hopes of saving bandwidth we are trying to avoid the use of
WINS between WAN links.
Is there any way of not using WINS and still have the clients find the
PDC (for updating

PDC/BDC Domain Logins Samba 2.2.7
We're about to start migrating from Windows NT 4.0 to a Samba controlled
setup. I've got a question about the functionality of the Samba PDCs and
BDCs.
In my Windows setup I have three domains that are defined by geographic
locations. Each of these domains "trusts" the other. In Samba 2.2.7, I
can't have the trusts, so I'm looking at creating one giant domain that

profile on a remote server
I notice that in the LDAP the profiles are store in a network share. Is it
possible to use a different samba server not setup as a PDC/BDC to share
these profile. for an example maybe setup a little samba box on a remote
site, that stores profiles and home dirs, but still auth against the PDC.
wouldnt that help keep network traffic on the WAN down?

Samba 3 with OpenLDAP multimaster or Fedora-DS
Hi,
I'd like to know if any of you have ever implemented Samba 3 with
OpenLDAP multimaster (using syncrepl, maybe) or Fedora-DS. The basic
idea would be:
- WAN link dies, the remote office's BDC would promote itself to PDC
(using some kind of monitoring script), and will start accepting
changes to the user base. Also, some change to the local WINS server
would be necessary.
- WAN link

Problem with samba3 BDC
Hi,
I have successfully installed and configured Samba 3.0.2 PDC & BDC / ldap
master & slave servers in local network. Then I moved BDC to another site
(with WAN connectivity). Now I discovered that workstations on this site
(with BDC) are not able to join domain. After some investigations (also
tcpdump) I found out that problem is that BDC don't reply to NBNS requests

machine and this also worked (the log file show me that the login is on
the bdc)! is it possible that the users can change

central PDC + remote BDCs: LDAP strategy, my lack of comprehension
Hello, I am trying to figure out how to implement a samba domain in a
number of remote offices around the world with partly bad and often
interrupted WAN connections/VPNs. The goal is to administer the directory
from the central data center.
My obvious choice would be to set up a central server with
SAMBA+OpenLDAP+smbldap-tools and in each remote office a SAMBA server with
OpenLDAP as a

Enable samba BDC to allow writing to local LDAP
How to configure smb.conf of a samba BDC server to allow that all changes (user's passwords changing, joining computers) was written to local LDAP.
I?ve set remotes LDAP's (BDCs) with multimaster configuration via syncrepl.
LDAP Multimaster feature works fine (N-way replication works perfectly)
I need this configuration to void errors when a user must to change his/her password in a
