causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for
some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine.
I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself
as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba
server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop
being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish
itself as

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody.
I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since
I couldn't find anything, here I am.
I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux.
A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server,
to manage the list of connected computers.
However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

Master Browser
I am using samba-1.9.18p10 in a Redhat 5.1 Linux box.
I have a short question, i.e.
Is it true that once the nmbd is running and becoming the Master Browser,
others win95 clients will not act as Master Browser anymore ?

Specifying Browser Computers
When you start a computer running Windows 2000, the browser service looks in
the registry for the entry MaintainServerList to determine whether a
computer will become a browser. MaintainServerList is found in the following
registry subkey:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters
Table I.1 shows the values to which MaintainServerList

Samba 3.5 loses local master browser election to Win7 32bits
Hi All:
I'm facing a weird behavior with Samba 3.5.10. It's a CentOS 6.3
repository RPM. Samba is acting as a PDC and integrated with OpenLDAP
2.4.23, also a CentOS RPM, through smbldap-tools 0.9.3 (from EPEL).
In my network I have Windows 7 64 bits and Windows 7 32 bits. The
problem is that Samba is losing local master browser 'status' to Win7
32 bits machines. From time to

Problem with master browser, Vista kills network neighbourhood
I have a Samba Server 3.0.23a running on a Fedora 4.
Since Vista entered my lan I've been having problems with
master browser elections. When a Vista client connects to my
workgroup it kills the network neighbourhood and the only
machines seen is the vista client and my fileserver.
By changing the regedit entries on the client side following
this advice:

browser problem
The browsing capability in Network Neighborhood disppears periodically.
Usually, double-clicking on Network Neighborhood gives us a list of all
the NT and Unix/samba boxes on the network segment (i.e. in the
Workgroup). When browsing disppears, all we see is *Entire Network*,
which has nothing in it.
We run a unix/NT network with 6 unix servers and about 80 NT clients. We
are running NT

Win2k Master Browser believes Linux box is master browser
Hi,
We currently have a very small network with a Windows Small Business
Server acting as an ADS Master Browser,
we also have a Debian Sarge Samba Server, this sharing a single
directory at the Share level (security is not really that dig a concern,
as this is open to anyone in the company).
The Samba server has the workgroup set the the same domain as the
Windows ADS, but it has not joined

problems with Windows XP clients becoming local master?
Hi there. First time posting to this but I'm getting desperate so apologies
for any netiquette faux pas...
I'm running a Suse box with Samba on it, with Windows XP SP2 clients viewing
it in a workgroup. Some pc's are having timeouts when attempting to view a
network share though. In the logs, sometimes at the same time as the
timeouts, this appears:

samba 4 AD and master browser
Just run some samba as file server, or perhaps you can even just run nmbd
on another host than on your DC.
That host running nmbd will participate to browsing election, it should win
election if you ask for it in smb.conf. Only DC won't appear in network
neighborhood, which is not an issue as even your users loves waste your
company time in searching in network neighborhood, they have nothing

Browse Master
Greetings,
I'm having a problem where our samba host is loosing browse master elections
to a Windows 2K notebook that is transient to our network. In the smb.conf I
have set the following paramaters in the [global] section:
local master = yes
preferred master = yes
os level = 255
After I made the above changes I restarted the host and at that time it won
the election and we could browse

how to stop WfWG local browse master announcements?
this isn't strictly a samba question, but it is related in that i'm trying
to a samba server as my domain master browser and multiple samba servers
as local master browsers for a workgroup across multiple subnets.
everything seems to be working wonderfully except for one WfWG host
which does not show up in the browse list as expected. i notice that
this host is announcing itself as a

Samba 3.6.1 losing browser elections to WinXP
Hello Samba;
I am aware this was a problem years ago...
This week I turned up a brand new server
to replace an embarrassingly old one. The
problem has re-occurred.
I expected this to be a problem long ago
fixed.
I have made the following registry edit to the
offending XP machine and restarted Samba.
I hope it sticks.
I have two questions:
1) Have I missed something in the configuration?

How do I force a browser election?
I can force a browser election with the Win98 command:
net view /workgroup:workgroupname
However, that does not work on NT (and I haven't tried it on W95). What I'd
really like is a command from the Linux command line to force the election.
I've looked everywhere and can't find it. For my purposes having preferred
master=yes and restarting Samba is not an option.
Does anyone

Local Master Browser and Win2K
Hi all, this is my first posting to Samba. :) *wave*
I'm trying to set my Samba box to be the local master browser for
the domain. I set os level to 65, but the Windows 2000 test machine
that we have keeps winning the election.
I've tried upping the os level to 75 to see if that works and it
doesn't appear to.
Does anyone know Windows 2000's os level, so I can set the Samba

determining domain master and forcing elections?
Every now and then one of my lusers sets up a machine which attempts
to be a local master and/or a domain master for our workgroup. This
sucks since we want our samba machine to *always* be the WINS master
server. (we have os level set to 255 for this machine) but appearantly
it still loses elections that come up from time to time.
The only way I know when this happens is when people come to me

WinME, Win2000: status
Hi all
Some time ago I asked about support of WinME and Win2000. The answer
was: not ready yet.
These days, when people enjoy VSS under Linux, I have to admit I really
need wine:)
So in a word: can I use Wine with any of these OSes? Could anyone please
point me out to the settings I need in my config file (I am especially
interested in Profile option)?
Thanks in advance

i have an NT4 server and a linux samba server. the NT4 server is
currently the WINS server. it works perfectly. i want to ditch it and
use my samba server as the WINS server, however WINS simply does not
work. could this be becuase the WINS server also needs to be the local
master browser?
