AW: wbinfo doesnt work...
Have you looked, if winbindd is still running after you started it? I
think, if the settings for winbind in smb.conf are not correct or if nmbd
isn't running, winbindd terminates immediatly after you started it.
Greetings,
Dominik

Yes, so you'll have to join the SCIENCEU domain, not SCIENCEU.ORG. You also have to put SCIENCEU as workgroup in smb.conf

getent showing wrong gids af
The only thing I know is that tdb files are Trivial DataBase files. So it's a database used by samba to persistently store stuff. The file I was refering to accidentally had "winbind" and "id" in its name, so I just deleted it to see what it gives. Seems I made the right choice.
I have no idea how to view these files though. Maybe someone on the list knows?

Since you've compiled with default options, your smb.conf is located in
/usr/local/lib/smb.conf . You should copy your working smb.conf for version 2.2.7 (/etc/samba/smb.conf) to /usr/local/lib.
You should run ./testparm as well.

Winbind cannot find/connect to PDC.
Hi all.
Funny thing happend: I had winbindd working, but now I can't get it back
up correctly. I'm not sure what I'm doing differently.
Samba version 2.2.5.
'wbinfo -u' says "Error looking up domain users". I joined the domain
with the command: 'smbpasswd -j OUR_DOMAIN -r thepdc -U Administrator'
and this returned saying "Joined domain

pam_mkhomedir.so and Samba question (was: RE: Script question)
Okay, I've got it partially working. Will that module also do it from a non-*nix login? For instance, say the user will more than likely never log into that server from a telnet session. Where would I put the following line:
session required /lib/security/pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel
I'm running RedHat 7.3. In the /etc/pam.d directory, there are a bunch of different files.

Samba and Solaris and Linux
Hello everyone,
Just kind of a generalized question, and looking more for caveats than
anything else. We're getting ready to implement the latest and greatest
release of Samba on one of our Sun servers. Unfortunately, we haven't
determined which one yet, but we only have two, so it's not a big deal.
Anyways, I've set up Samba successfully on Linux on multiple occasions,

Making iconv portable?
Hello, All:
What would it take to make ?iconv? portable?
I ask, because I want to convert accented characters to vanilla ASCII, thereby converting, e.g., ?Ra?l? to ?Raul?, and Milan Bouchet-Valet suggested on R-help that I use 'iconv(x, ?", "ASCII//TRANSLIT?)?. This worked under Windows but failed on Linux and Mac. It?s part of the ?subNonStandardCharacters? function
