ok, so oplocks: good or bad?
I have been searching for info on this and haven't found an authoritative answer. From what I have read, oplocks are good because they increase connection speeds, but they are bad because they don't really work, but they actually do work, but they only work in some cases, etc etc. so, here's my problem and my question together: I get tons of these messages every day (over a thousand a

A Group Policy Question in Win9x (yes, another one).
I am wondering if anyone has ever answered the question of group policy operability under Windows 9x. That is, I am _not_ looking for a work-around but the real thing--one config.pol file to service several groups. I have done my homework, hopefully well, but found nothing. To prove this, I will quickly summarize my findings below. Either I have found: 1. a list of unresolved (mostly

I ran out of gas by looking through google also... :-( With Best Regards YS

Cross Subnet Browsing.
hi, I need a hand setting up cross subnet browsing. Does anyone have some good news group postings, or a HOWTO? I have 2 samba servers, and 2 subnets. Each servers sits on it's own domain/workgroup. I think this should be much simpler than it is, and perhaps I am just missing one or two settings. Of the 2 servers: A, B I would like 'A' to do any serving or hold any

Questions on Roaming Profiles
Hello everyone. Well, I have a couple of questions regarding roaming profiles. I have been assigned the task of setting up a Samba PDC on our network. Lately, I have been doing a lot of research and reading to find out the best way I setup my system. I have a couple of questions I wanted to ask here, in hopes of getting some feedback. First, some details: The server will be Red Hat 8.0 with

Why a PDC?
At my office there's talk of moving from a "WorkGroup" currently hosted through samba to a Domain, possibly hosted through samba. Anyone got a definitive "why we should or should not rip out the existing, working workgroup to put in a domain?" :wq! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert L. LMB question
Can somebody explain to me how the whole Local Master Browser thing works? I'm running samba across 3 subnets, and all the docs tell you to set up a Local Master Browser on each subnet. I couldn't find any documentation on how to actually do that so I used the remote announce option in smb.conf, and it's working great, but now there are two machines (one for each subnet outside of the

Locking Down Windows 2000 Professional
Good day, We have set up a Samba 2.x domain. So far so good. We want to lock down the workstations. For example, we don't want users to have access to the run command from the start menu and we don't want them to access control panel. >From what I have read NT 4.0 system policies seem to be the way to go. Is this correct? If so, what utility can I use to create the policies? Are

samba pdc/roving profiles/encrypted passwords
It is my understanding that roving profiles cannot be implemented without using encrypted passwords. It is also my understanding that encrypted passwords cannot be implemented without pointing smb.conf to a windows password server. I'm trying to set up a samba server on a Linux (RedHat 7.3) to act as a PDC and a provider for roving profiles - when I do things with cleartext (encryption

User Rights
Color me stupid! I have set up a small SAMBA network using a Caldera Systems eServer 2.3 implementation of Linux with a AMD K-6/2 and 128 meg RAM. It works great from one computer, and one user id, but I am unable to login as any other user. The one user is set up in such a way that it would create a serious security hole (member of group root). The server shows up in the network neighborhood,
