win ME/Samba connection
Ok, believe it or not, I've looked through all 209 pages of the
Samba-HOWTO_Collection.pdf plus used this mail list and other internet
sources, used those recommendations, tried almost every possible
iteration on the samba.conf file, looked at logs until nauseated and
have concluded that there is no way that Windows ME can connect to a
Linux box using Samba. Connecting to the WinME box from

XP can browse samba by IP, but not by name - NMB issues?
I have an XP home (falcon) and an XP pro (tatooine) machine, both
behind a rh9 box (hoth) acting as firewall. I've been trying to get
samba set up on the linux box. I think I have it mostly working except
that the XP boxes won't list hoth under "My Network Places - Microsoft
Windows Network - MSHOME",
and I cannot access hoth by name at all from the XP-pro box (by IP, I

Samba Start
How are you verifying? Have you tried using top and looking for smbd and
nmbd? Swat may be giving you erroneous info if that is what you are using to
verify. Hope this helps...

Mac can't connect to debian after upgrade to Samba 3.0.23
After upgrading my Debian box to Samba 3.0.23, I'm no longer able to
connect to it from my Mac OS X 3.9 machine. I can still connect from the
linux box TO the mac, but not the other way around. I need to be able to
mount the linux volume on the mac. I've had to downgrade to samba 3.0.22
on linux to get it to work. My home network is a simple 2 machine setup

strange permission denied problem
I built an embedded box which uses mount.cifs to mount network
shares. I've shipped several of these and all are working fine except
for one, which gives me permission denied on certain files:
root@Mnemosyne:~/mnt/bgrp1/c/Ballance Group Folders/Scully/Client
Photos-Scully# cat "Office Pics 002.jpg" > /dev/null

entries in /var/log/message
I am noticing the following entry in my /var/log/message file:
Mar 5 04:03:31 dbserver1 nmbd[7317]: name_to_nstring:
workgroup name MSHOME,DATABASESRV is too long. Truncating to
MSHOME,DATABASE
It is in there a lot. Is this something I should try to fix?
Thanks

XP Home and samba
I built a small embedded samba server based on Samba 3.0.26b. I tested
it locally with XP Pro running in a vmware VM.
All worked fine, so I shipped it.
Turns out the person using it is running XP Home. Here's her note:
I have restarted the computer and waited ten minutes and still nothing.
All that comes up is the mshome under the Microsoft Windows Network.
So it looks like all

virtual server configuration issues
Greetings,
I've used samba for many years now on various platforms and its worked very
well. I'm now trying to use 'virtual servers' to combine several smb servers
on one machine and have been following the clear and simple instructions here:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch04_07.html (I've also
cross-referenced these instructions with various posts to

smbclient 127.0.0.1 timeout .... PCs can't browse LInux share
Let's see I've got a network about 10 PCs running XP and 1 running
Linux. I had setup Samba and it was running like a charm. XP pcs
could access linux box through network neighborhood and access 2
shared dir and edit/change files.
Really not sure what has gone wrong. I am using Samba 2.2.8a
I run both smbd and nmbd as daemons. When I run ps -aux they show up.

openldap - samba
I am having a problem getting users that were added in smbldap-useradd to be
able to login.
After I add them they are visible, but you can see I get this error -
pdb_get_group_sid:
Failed to find Unix account for test10
I believe that this has something to do with nss_ldap. because doing a
getent passwd, it doesn't display any smb info.
Any debugging info or help would be amazing, I'm

Can't access Linux from Windows Xp box.
Hi, there,
I have 2 machines ( running Linux Red Hat 8.0 and Windows Xp individually),
which share a broadband Internet connection through a router.
After installing Samba 2.2.7.a on Linux machine, I can use "smbclient" to
access Windows machines, see the files and transfer files.
But from Windows machine, I can only see the Linux machine under "My Network
Place" -->
