strsplit and the empty string
Hello, I am wondering about the behaviour of strsplit. When the pattern matches the beginning of the search string, the mepty string is added to the result, but that's not the case when the pattern matches the end of the search string: strsplit(" hello dolly ") [1] "" "hello" "dolly" The man for strsplit explains the algorithm: " The algorithm

content of initramfs CPIO archive
Hi, I am compiling a tiny linux kernel 2.6.10 to be used together with linuxbios. The boot phase will go as follows: linuxbios->tiny linux kernel->initramfs The initramfs shall use dhcp to get it's address and then tftp a full featured kernel. This kernel must be started through kexec. I use a tweaked networkdriver in the kernel and cannot use a normal PXE boot. Which files should I

1.36 again
Given that no 1.36 has appeared from Fedora Core, I thought I would create the rpm myself. I took the 1.35-11.2 src.rpm from FC3 and updated the spec file for 1.36. However, the build fails. Has anyone successfully created a 1.36 rpm for FC3? If so, what did you need to do? Gene

Formatting a USB Drive
Hi All, I have a Drobo, connected to a CentOS 6.4 box. The box sees it as /dev/sdg. I want to format it ext3 (as they dont support ext4) but when I try I get: # fdisk -u /dev/sdg WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdg'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. WARNING: The size of this disk is 17.6 TB (17592186044416 bytes). DOS partition table

More on Problems with PXELinux and ramdisk not loading
Had to changed the Subject header because the mailing list software thought the previous one ("so old bootloader" ...) was suspicious. Just a backgrounder and a little more info I've gathered: Trying to install Fedora Core 3 via PXE using DHCP-TFTP. Kernel loads but initrd isn't used for rootfs. The machine's an AMD Athlon 64-based box with 512MB physical memory (one DDR

[PATCH] Strip trailing . when using HostbasedUsesNameFromPacketOnly
The following simple patch (against openssh-3.1) moves the test for a trailing dot in the client-supplied hostname so that it is also stripped when using the server option HostbasedUsesNameFromPacketOnly. Please CC me on any replies, as I'm not subscribed to the list. Cheers, Bill Rugolsky --- ssh/auth2.c~ Sun Feb 24 14:14:59 2002 +++ ssh/auth2.c Wed May 8 16:26:26 2002 @@ -709,15

Changing only file permissions
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Normally, I would say that --checksum is actually slower than just letting rsync re-copy everything and therefore is almost always the wrong thing to do. However, in this case, you really don't want to overwrite the running OS even with files that are essentially the same. So, if the system is running from that storage then --checksum might

ssh_config "database"/"sort"able format?
Hi there, I'm in a situation where some of my clients have all these obscurity things with ssh, like putting it on a different port, or a different user to login for this specific host not mention several don't have proper DNS names and and and. Life is to short to debate it with the client so rather get in line, use ssh_config, and continue to serve the client. However, now I have the

data=writeback option on root partition - RH 8.0
Well, I had the first use of the recovery mode on the RH 8.0 install CD today on a dev system. I changed the mount option for the root partition to data=writeback to see what all the claimed speed increases are about, and the system failed to mount the partition r/w, so the resulting boot failed. After search usenet, it seems other RH folks have had this problem, possibly because it is

Changing only file permissions
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 No, even if bandwidth is your concern I would say that --checksum is wrong. Maybe if bandwidth is so scarse that a few KB vs a few MB equates to dollars then sure, use --checksum. Otherwise, letting rsync re-delta-xfer everything is certainly faster and not much more bandwidth intensive than --checksum. Plus that is only if you screwed up and ran

hd sometimes 'hangs' a few seconds
hi, I recently changed my filesystem to ext3 (from ext2), and since then, my hard disk sometimes seems to 'hang' a few seconds (in fact the whole system hangs then, and only the hd LED is on), before continuing normally... This happens for example (not always though) when I untar an archive and try to ls in the newly created directory... Is there an explanation for this? And if so,

Threading troubles 1.4.5 & IAX2-> SIP (FreeBSD specific??)
Hi there, I've asked this question to the BSD group too, but I'd like to know whether anybody else had similar experiences on Linux 2.6.20 etc.?? FreeBSD 6.2 Asterisk 1.4.5 (and 1.4.3 from ports) Sip phone - PBX(*) -IAX2-VROUTER(*)- SIP-Voip provider (SPA901 & SPA922 phones) We've see a situation where the IAX2 appears to "loose"/drop the voice data to be sent to

Rsync & parallelizing it for files in same directory
Hi there, I haven't yet delved into the rsync source code, and thus would need to ask a few questions first before going into the wrong direction. We have not, one but several cases[1] of doing Disaster Recovery type backup/synchronization with typically 1 to 2 million of files. Now yes, I know I can go and write a perl/python/<flavour_of_the_year> script to recursively do the

online resizing patch for ext3-2.4?
Hi Andreas, Any plans to do a release of the online resizing patch for ext3-1.0? I've put off asking about this until Al Viro's superblock handling and other fixes were done, but now that LVM 1.0.1 seems to be approaching a stable and -linus/-ac mergeable state, this would certainly make deploying ext3+LVM a lot simpler. Regards, Bill Rugolsky

Back in May there was a discussion regarding ext3 + LVM. Were the issues raised by Jay Weber, Andreas Dilger, and others ever resolved satisfactorily, in either the 2.2 or 2.4? Thanks, Bill Rugolsky

Intermittent process crash serving files
We have been using SAMBA for file/print servers and domain controllers in Windows networks for several years. At one site, we have intermittent problems in which the connection to the SAMBA server appears to die: i.e., no one can connect to the share, and the Windows clients (Terminal Servers and workstations) apparently keep re-trying to connect which ultimately locks up those clients.
