umask setting in /etc/profile not working
Hey all, We have the following set in /etc/profile : umask 0002 so that it will affect all users. That should create all files as 664 and all directories as 775 if I'm not mistaken. Well I logged into the machine after this was set and just created a file as one of the users who complained about permissions settings on files. And this is what I saw: [user1 at qa_host ~]$ ls -l test_qa

capistrano can''t find svn
I''m trying to get capistrano to deploy to an osx machine - rake remote:cold_deploy but it fails on the svn co line with "bash: line 2: svn: command not found" I''ve set the proper path to svn (/usr/local/bin) in both .bash_profile and .bash_login but capistrano seems to be ignoring these. How does capistrano know where to look for svn? Thanks

rsync not getting all files?
I ran rsync on a combination of Ubuntu and CentOS systems and it doesn't seem to grab all files, such as .cshrc or .bashrc (and they do exist). This makes me wonder what other files rsync may be missing, and how do I tell rsync to grab those missing files? Thanks.

Can one invoke multiple INSTANCEs of Firefox on CentOS
I am doing some testing with XForms and I really need a separate instance of Firefox, one that shares nothing with my primary instance that has various reference works and web sites open, to test forms. Is this even possible? I have a sense from the small bit of testing that I have done that even with separate profiles and invoking the firefox process manually from different terminal windows

sftp client
As of Sunday evening, OpenSSH has an interactive sftp client. It should be in the more recent snapshots. It would be appreciated if you could test new client and find all the bugs :) Please also have a read of the manpage and ensure that it matches what is implemented. I am working on fixing the ones that I know about, so please try to stay up to date with the snapshots. Thanks, Damien

securely set environment variables per user
Hi. Is there a way to securely set environment variables per user on the remote side? What I want is e.g. that I determine on the remote side, that user foo should always have PATH set to "blafasl". ~/.ssh/environment came to my mind for this,... but it needs PermitUserEnvironment which (according to documentation) allows trickery with things like LD_PRELOAD and which I do not want

Renviron.site and Rprofile.site in Fedora
On Debian/Ubuntu, system wide environment variables and options are set in respectively /etc/R/Renviron.site and /etc/R/Rprofile.site. These files are automatically created when r-base is installed, and do not get overwritten during an upgrade. On Fedora, there is no /etc/R directory. What is the recommended place to define system wide environment variables and options on a Fedora system?

What is the universal (world wide) understanding behind degaussing harddisks?
Good evening from Singapore! The foremost question which I want to ask is, what is the universal (world wide) understanding behind degaussing hard drives? I work for No Secrets Agency (NSA) Pte Ltd (fictitious company name used). My sales manager Edward Joseph Snowden (fictitious individual name used) had *promised* our customer Leave Me in the Lurch (S) Pte Ltd (fictitious company name used)

Thanks to Peter Dalgaard , I have made some decent progress as far as getting R to work in linux . I just want to set my environment variable R_LIBS to /u/etlfs/dev/users/leedsmar/R/library ( in linux ) so that I can install specific packages. Does anyone know the syntax and in which file I set this variable ( .Rprofile etc ). I've looked in the installation manual ( i'm mainly on pg 14

Using centos and kickstart to build a minimum installation
Using centos 5.2, I want to use a kickstart file to select packages in order to have an unattended install onto a bare-metal server. Is there any way of finding out which packages I need to compile, build and run asterisk ? I generally want to build all modules in asterisk and the wct4xxp zaptel module I want to be able to not select any groups in the kickstart file, but only select

libguestfs error: need help troubleshooting
Hi, I'm trying to manually create a rhel7 image using the qemu-img and virt-install commands. I'm re-testing a procedure I previously wrote with the new grub commands that a customer suggested we add in. This procedure is available at: http://file.bne.redhat.com/dnavale/docs/review/RH-guides/AG-020715/#sect-create-images As in the procedure, I'm able to run all steps successfully

Ruby/rails on Mac OSX not working
I have been using Locomotive for rails development and recently decided to fix up the ruby/rails install that is on my mac. As we all know, Ruby 1.8.2 came on the mac and has problems, so I followed the instructions at Hivelogic for installing the latest versions of Ruby, Rails, Lighttpd and so forth. I have this set in my path within bash_login: export

cd drive not found
By reading messages on this list, I think that I have figured out that in gnome, you should be able to find directories like media/floppy jerry@linux-8ldg:/media> dir total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2006-08-18 20:18 floppy Since the only sub directory I have in the media directory is floppy, does this mean that I have not configured the computer correctly? I cannot get to the cd drive

LD_LIBRARY_PATH issues
Here is the thing. All workstations in the network have the /etc/profile modified and set up to call a profile script in the network that sets up variables that we need here. Here $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and other variables get set, fixed, or modified to support our development process. The weird thing is that while in a TTY the $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is fine and retains its value. But if I log in to the gui
