no route to host between Mac samba and Linux samba
I have a mac running Mac OS X ans samba 2.2.5 which is provided by
Apple. The Linux server have samba 2.2.8 (the last one). Sometimes, in
the server logs, you have:

read_data: read failure for 4. Error = No route to host
in this case, the Macclient lost the samba connection and has to reboot
because a silly error (Mac error: -47, %

joining xp to domain
I have a mac osx 10.2.3 as a server, anyone unfamiliar with it, it uses
admin as main user. root is still on the system. Admin is admin of the
password server which is required to login to samba. therefore root can't
be the one to join. yet admin doesn't have rights to modify smbpasswd.
I know the smb.conf config should work.
I have added the users and machines using smbpasswd

Win2k DC no longer authenticates for Samba shares
I have a win2k domain ... 2 of the client machines are Red Hat (7.3 and
8.0). I set everything up to use the DC to authenticate ID/PW. Everything
worked perfectly until a week or so ago ... Samba would automatically create
a home folder and the whole nine yards. Now I can see the shares on the
Samba machines, but I can't access them ... just prompts for the ID/PW over
and over. I can mount

Logon Script Doesn't
Hi,
I've finally been dragged kicking and screaming into the wonderful world of XP.
I've been able to join a domain and login with the help of the docs on samba.org and
gleaning info from this list. Google and I don't get along.
My question is How do I get the logon script to run when XP logs in? Win 98 doesn't
have a problem running the logon script.
Here is part of the

Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows
Can anyone provide me a few suggestions?
I installed Redhat 8.0 on my laptop. XP Pro on my windows box.
I am using Samba/SWAT at the moment as well.
I have the basic smb.conf that I took from the example folder and made no
changes except opening the public share. (unfortunately I am at work so I
cant show exactly what I have). I also added the workgroup = line under
[global] and added my

Macintosh OS 9.2 and SMB Networks
Some use Dave (http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html) or DoubleTalk
(http://www.connectix.com/products/dt.html). However, we use Netatalk
(http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/) successfully to share the Unix/Samba file
system with our Mac clients. Is there any reason you can't use Netatalk?

Older Mac to SAMBA copy
I've built a new samba server to replace an aging Apple 9500 running 8.6
that is acting as a 'file server'. The other macs run 9.2 and 10.2, which
are the computers that will be served (I HOPE!) by the samba server.
I have installed DAVE in order to be able to copy the files over to the new
server. However, as the files copy, they disappear on the samba
server. Someone said it

password key in Windows XP
We are using SAMBA 2.2.4 to support a large community of Windows users. The
latest deployment of PC's come with Windows XP, and we need to disable
Password Encryption on those to use SAMBA. We need help in locating the
"EnablePlainTextPassword" key.
Thanks in advance

Dissapearing samba servers
Hi
I've seen a couple of people post this problem, but I've never seen an
answer, and now it's happenning to me.
I run Solaris 2.5.1, and samba-1.9.17p1.
Every so often a pc can look in the network neighborhood and the samba
server just isn't there, though you can still map a network drive by
using a UNC pathway:
\\server\share
so the share is still out there but the server

Samba4 - PDC - RHEL6 - Slow browsing from Mac clients
Hi,
I'm in the process of rolling out a brand new server as a Samba4 PDC to a customer with about 30 users. It's going well except for the fact that I now have some serious slow browsing issues from Mac clients, and that?s when only a handful of them are connected to the server. Note that if I install software such as Dave from Thursby on the Macs, the speed issues vanish. Also, browsing

Samba 3.0 help
Is there a place that has all the options that you can add to the smb.conf
file in verion 3. How to set up as a domain controller and how the acl's
work. The documentation for verion 2.x on the samba web site is excellent
, but I was not able to find any for 3.x. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

%windows_version?
I was wondering if there was a %{char} that would give me the windows
version or something equivalent so that Windows XP specific "stuff"
doesn't get stuck with Windows 2000 "stuff".
Thanks for the help.

Problem with OS X (as client) to Samba on Linux box
Hoping someone can give me a pointer on this:
I'm trying to connect a Mac OS X 10.2.6 machine to Samba 2.2.8 hosted
on a Linux 2.2.20 machine. I can authenticate, connect to a share,
navigate through. I can even delete and move files. But, whenever I
try to save a file in most programs, or copy a file in the Finder, I'm
told that I don't have the privileges to do it.
Strangely

Macintosh + Samba integration
I have been searching through the docs and on the web to no avail.
I work at a university and we are moving our fileservers to new
hardware.
The problem is, nothing seems to integrate Mac's and Win box's happily.
We have a large user base using samba already, but when mac's pick up
the same share via CAP, CAP creates files to deal with the dual 'stream'
nature of files from a

NT roaming profiles unable to be updated
We have recently upgraded from Samba 2.0.4 to 2.2.7 on our test machine
with a view to using W2K and WXp clients. We are using Samba on Solaris
7 version of Unix. Our client PC's are all NT 4, SP5. We have a default
profile for users who login and load the major application (they don't
see any of the NT desktop or have access to the Start button). Other
users who have access to the desktop

NT PDC to Samba PDC migratio
I thought that it was quite impossible to do that due to the Domain SID
as well as the SAM list that currently Samba is unable to retrieve. (Not
that it would have helped me any, since our old NT 4.0 PDC took a major
Hardware failure.)
How would one duplicate the SID, is that possible with 'smbpasswd -S'
from the new Samba DC?

samba and OS X
Hello,
We are having this issue with samba and OSX 10.2.3. We are using
freebsd4.7 serving samba as a fileserver for our company, we have a mix
of windows and macs connecting to it. The windows machines work just
fine the macs are another story.
I have narrowed it down to this: I can open a file/document from the
fileserver on my mac and edit it but it tells me I dont have the
permissions to

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the
FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new
questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if
it's misdirected.
Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and
mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix
applications ignore this information, but it

R usage -- for article
Hello all,
I write a decision-support column for a computing magazine,
Intelligent Enterprise. In my next column, I'll be revisiting a topic I
wrote on 3 years ago, open-source analytical software. R is perhaps the
most successful open-source analytical package.
I'd like to hear from users, especially those who chose R for some
other reason than that it's free, about what
