incremental backup preserving extended attributes
Hi,
I have 2 linux machines, SOURCE and DEST on a network. I create some
snapshots of the file structure on SOURCE and these snapshots have extended
attributes. I want to copy the snapshots from SOURCE over to DEST over the
network, but I don't want to lose the information on the extended
attributes. I don't think that rsync supports this so I was wondering if
anyone knew of a protocol

rsync limit to file size/file count
Hi,
What are the limits to file size and file count when doing a rsync transfer
using 2.5.6?
I was trying to rsync about 500 GB of data with many files and many
directories, but it has been stuck building the file list for several hours.
First of all, is it possible to transfer 500 GB of data? Secondly, what
would the limit for file count be when doing a rsync transfer? Any comments
or help

Can't see all of the directories in a share with 2.2.7a-1 & RH8...but older version/kernel can
Hi all,
Hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction and/or
help me solve my problem.
We have a number of Linux servers (RH6.2 -> RH8) which connect to the
same share on a Win2000 Server. We've been working kinda hard to get
everything upgraded to either RH7.3 or RH8.0 since we rarely get the
opportunity. 2 similar servers (one dev, one prod) access this same
window

support@microsoft e-mails is a VIRUS
Attention rsync list members,
Do not open up the attachment that comes along with this e-mail because it
is a virus.
Is there anyway you can stop sending these e-mails to everybody on the list?
I've received maybe 3 or 4 of them since yesterday.

Winbind: login "cannot find name for group ID XXXXX" ONLY RedHat 8
My RedHat 8.0 workstation doesn't want to play nice
with Winbind. The rest of our Samba servers (on
RedHat 7.3) are working fine, and I am familiar with
setting up Winbind.
Samba: 2.2.7a (RPM from Samba.org. RedHat's RPMs do
same thing.)
Kernel 2.4.20
NT 4 domain
I'd copied the pam and smb.conf from a working box in
testing. Getent passwd and group works, BUT getent

Some doubts
Hi, I'm trying to setup samba server on FreeBSD-4.7-STABLE, with samba version 2.2.7a. It runs so good (better than our snap server :).
I need to know if should be possible, that users can modify, save, and all other possible operations on files except delete it.
My users config are, more or less:
All users have their uid
All users are in same gid
Some project admins (they are on

Using Winbindd in nsswitch.conf
Hello, all--
I've a question regarding using WINS for resolving names while on the unix
box. As I understand it, you're supposed to add something to the
/etc/nsswitch.conf file, but it's not clear to me whether it's supposed to
be 'wins', 'winbind', or 'winbindd' as in the following example:
hosts: files wins nisplus nis dns
hosts: files winbind

Redhat ACL support
Hi,
I'm trying to setup a RedHat 8 fileserver, it must work seamlessly within
our 2000/NT network. After some research, I believe the first thing I need
to do is install ACL support.
I tried doing this once, didn't go well, had to reinstall RedHat.
What files do I need and from where, to install ACL support for RedHat 8?

FreeBSD 5.0 + ACLs
Hi all,
I am playing with a test box at the moment running a Samba 2.2.7a domain
on FreeBSD 5.0. I wish to enable ACLs, but I am not exactly sure what I
am supposed to expect once they are enabled.
I have created a UFS2 partition and enabled ACL support using tunefs.
Since doing that, I have been able to connect to the Samba shares and
modify ACLs, but so far the only things I have been able to

Samba/Windows XP and SSH tunnelling
Hi,
I've been trying to get SSH tunnelling working with Samba. I'm using a
Windows XP and a RedHat 8.0 box. I've closely followed the instructions from
the HOWTO manual in order to set this up to no avail.
I think the problem comes from the fact that my lmhosts file has no effect
on the NetBIOS name cache when I preload it with the command 'nbtstat -R'. I
checked the

IceS 2.0a - Extended sleep requested
I've just finished a little encoding set and the
following happened:
22Khz resampled, q-0.4 encode = ~38kbs = one error at
the beginning only.
22Khz resampled, q-0.5 encode = ~37kbs = 6 to 7 sleep
errors in the first second or so, nothing after that.
22Khz resampled, q-0.6 encode = ~35kbs = 14 to 15
sleep errors then nothing.
22Khz resampled, q-0.8 encode = ~33kbs = Many sleep
errors.

!!ATTENTION NEWBIES!!
I've been reading this list for a few weeks now and
I've given advice on questions that look challenging
but I've deleted MANY questions like these:
"How do I (easy question found in the documents)?"
Though I don't count myself an expert, I've known
enough experts to see that they _HATE_ it when you
don't invest some time before asking a question. I

[LLVMdev] Preserving ProfileInfo in several Passes
Hi all,
this (altough a big patch) is actually pretty straight forward: It
(tries) to preserve ProfileInfo in all -std-compile-opts passes and all
X86-Backend passes.
There is still some passes that have corner cases where the ProfileInfo
is not correct after the pass. Some passes are still missing...
How shall I proceed with this?

Samba in Samba
I have a Samba PDC installed to authorize my windows network clients.
And it is running
on Solaris. I want to install a one another Samba file server and I want it
to authorize windows clients by consulting the PDC. This second server
must also
paricipate in the domain the PDC is responsible for. How can I do this?
Thanks,
Cyril.

New user seeking information
I run an application on an HPUX 11.0 system that creates report files daily
and I am wanting to have those files placed on a W2K server instead of the
local drive during creation. Can I do this w/ Samba? Thanks for your
time.

Not preserving permissions really preserves some
This appears to be a feature :-)
I'm running rsync 2.5.5 on Solaris 8, and testing transferring
files between two boxes with permission preservation turned *off*.
I have three files:
700 with permissions 700
770 with permissions 770
777 with permissions 770
The umask for the target system is set to: 007
[I have checked this via prints from the rsync code]
When the files get transferred,

Groups with Samba domain controler or domain member
Does anybody know more about groups? I am considering switching from NT
to Samba domain and have made some test. Unfortunately I need to make
two additional groups, except Domain Admin (one of them is Domain
Users). Is it possible to make that with the stable version of Samba?
And another, but not so important (for now) question. Currently I have a
Samba server, providing files and printers

IceS 2.0a - Extended sleep requested
I've just set up a new collection of streams and one
of them is having problems. The clients connecting to
this one stream only last a few minutes before getting
kicked off. I don't know where to start looking for
the problem.
I'm running Mandrake 8.1 with Libshout2.0, IceS 2.0a
and Icecast2 downloaded from cvs only a few days ago
(with the mentioned os.h error included ;-)

IceS 2.0a - Extended sleep requested
Thanks for offering to help, Karl.
Config - I thought my email was long even without the
config files so I didn't include them! They are normal
random playlist configs. What aspects are you looking
for?
CPU - vmstat 1 gives consistant CPU readings of around
2,1,97 for us,sy,id respectively when no one is
listening to the streams. There's hardly any change
when a client starts listening.
