passwd not running as root
Hi all,
I posted a message about this problem a couple of weeks ago without a
response so I'm trying again. My problem is that samba does not seem to
be running passwd as root when it tries to sync the passwords. For
example, when I run smbpasswd as a user logged onto the samba box I get
the following error:
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The

Changing passwd as ordinary user
Dear all,
when I try to change my password as ordinary user using "smbpasswd", I get
the following error message:
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The
specified password is invalid.
I'm sure my old password is correct and the new password also.
If I change the ordinary user password as root, everything works fine...
I would appreciate your help,

Problem is, users can't set their passwords, only I can as root.
Password is not set / blank, but they still get:

smbpasswd doesn't work
On my Samba-server (normal) users aren't abled to change their password.
When they use smbpasswd they are asked to insert the old password, the new
pasword and to confirm the new password. After the confirmation of the new
password they receive an error:

I set the following in smb.conf:

Unix password sync
Hi all,
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I've searched Google and the
archives and it hasn't revealed an answer to my problem.
Basically I'm trying to get unix password sync to work so that users can
change both their logon and other services (POP3 etc) passwords from
within Windows. but the problem is that if I enable unix password sync,
it fails with the error of:

Samba unix password sync
Hello all:
I know I had posted this question a while ago, but I have just not been
able to get it to work. I am trying to sync samba passwords with unix
passwords and it is just not working. I have attached the
results of
"testparm -sv /etc/samba/smb.conf > smbconfig.txt"
with this email. I have also attached the "net groupmap list" results.

Salim,
Yes I do have permission to run the passwd command as
a local user, I can change the unix password just
fine. It is when I do the smbpasswd command that that
error comes up. Thanks for looking at this!

Difficulties with samba and ADS
Hello.
I thought I had this fixed 3 times now... but it keeps coming up. I have 2
smbservers that are part of an ADS domain (windows 2003 server).
I have my samba servers set up, and it works great for a month or so, then it
starts giving smbmount and smbclient a hard time. This is very bad news
because I rely upon smbmount heavily.
When I try to view the shares my main server, and use the

I am using VirtualBox. Windows 7 Home is the host. Fedora 13 is the guest.
My goal is to cause the Fedora guest to expose an smb share to the Win 7
host and have the Win 7 host mount the share as a drive.

unix password sync not working
Hi,
I have a samba server configured with SECURITY=USER and am having
trouble getting the UNIX PASSWORD SYNC to work. When I use smbpasswd to
change a samba user password, everything goes well and the samba
password is changed but the unix password is not changed. Per the
manuals, samba trys to change the unix password first and if it fails,
it will NOT change the samba password. However, the

Samba, pam, NIS and password changes
Hi
I have a customer who is having a problem with Samba password changes.
The samba server (server12) is set up as a PDC for a WIndows domain with
XP clients. Samba is Version 3.0.26a-SerNet-RedHat. OS is Centos 3.9.
There is also a separate mail server (server56) running FC6 which uses
NIS for user validation.
NIS server is running on server12.
Generally speaking, everything is working and
