Hard disk failure, can't read journal
I can not start my laptop anymore, due to what looks like a physical HD
failure. During boot I get:
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { Uncorrectable Error }, LBAsect=260112,
sector 51144
and then
JBD: Failed to read block at offset 5864
JBD: recovery failed
EXT3-fs: error loading journal
then the laptop is frozen.
While I understand this drive will need a prompt replacement, I am
trying to recover

How come fsck still kicks in and reports major errors with Ext3?
Greetings.
Total newbie with Ext3. I selected when I upgraded my system to

redhat config file for kernel-2.4.17
Hi...
I am new to Linux (a few days), and I can't get to boot with a new
compiled kernel (2.4.17). I wonder if any one has a copy of a
successful config file? I get errors with regard to the number of
cpu's, ext3, journaling, and others... For now I am (naively) assuming
that I have a problem with a combination of settings in the config
file.)
Regards...
Miguel.

slowdown and reiserfs
hi
i got 2 questions and maybe someone could shed some light:
a) i'm using kernel 2.4.17 and use ext3 in it. is it possible that the
whole system is slower than with ext2? i switched back to ext2 (great
feature!!!) and the system's response seemed somewhat better.
should/could there be such a effect as double writing of journaled data?
i didnt activate debugging (jbd).
b) is reiserfs

when is fsck required?
Hi,
can anyone give me an example of
when an fsck would repair something
that the ext3 driver would not? with
full "data=journal" journaling, would
fsck ever need to be run if all the
partitions were ext3?
the ext3 mini-howto refers to "certain
rare hardware failure cases (e.g. hard
drive failures)" that would require a
filesystem check, but doesn't go into
details.

What is Judy?
I am trying to build Miredo 1.1.5
(http://www.remlab.net/miredo/devel.shtml.en)
I have followed the rpmbuild instructions from:
http://www.owlriver.com/tips/non-root/, and have the miredo source in
~/build/miredo-1.1.5.
I run ./configure (as the INSTALL text file tells me to do) and get the
error:

devfs and ext3?
Hi!
Today I switched over to devfs. I'm on Debian unstable, installed
devfsd, installed a kernel with devfs support and "devfs mount on boot".
Reboot, devfs is being used.
All over a sudden, dmesg reports:

analyze subsample of dataframe
Hi there,
I'm dealing with a pretty big dataset (~22,000 entries) with numerous
entries for every day over a period of several years. I have a column
"judy" (for Julian Day) with 0 beginning on Jan. 1st of every new year (I
want to compare tendencies between years). However, in order to control for
a leap year (2004), I simply need to subtract 1 from every judy value for
the year

Admin user
I want to create a user "samba" that has admin privileges over the
directory where Win95 apps will be installed, but does not have
root privileges.
Are their any problems with doing so?
Thanks,

inetd & etc
Hello.
I know that it is recommended to run smbd as a standalone daemon and to
avoid inetd. Can you please tell me why inetd is discouraged and what
problems it imposes?
Also, I have one user who is having problems accessing her personal files
on a MacOSX 10.3.2 via smb. Any ideas what may be causing it?

Auditing filesystems for Linux?
Does anyone know of any Linux-based filesystem that does file-level
auditing and logs based on username? Does ext2/3 do such auditing
(stock or with patches)? I would like a filesystem that can be told to
audit and log file deletions and log the username that deleted the file
(similar to auditing on NTFS).
I know, I should be using file permissions to prevent this type of
deletion from

glibcc < 2.2 how do I tell?
Hi,
I'm looking over the Wine documentation, and it says that the particular
version that looks like it will work with my version of RedHat 7.1 will
only work if the glibcc is 2.2 or above. How do I tell? I"m a newbie and
not sure exactly what the glibcc is.

I had to reboot a machine as I lost the ssh connectivity to it. I could

mode data=journal in ext3. Is it safe to use?
Hello
I try again.
Can anybody of you acknowledge or not if mode data=journal in ext3 is
safe to use in Linux kernel 2.6.x?
Wee need to have a very consistent and integrity for our filesystem, and
it would then be desired to journal both data and metadata.
But if this mode can corrupt the filesystem as both Phil White and
Nicolas Kowalski has experienced, it may be more advised to use mode
