Samba as PDC for WinXP, Win9
Simon, What version of Windows XP are you using? If your client has purchased computers from Best Buy or a similar electronics "mega-store" they likely received WinXP Home Edition. (Which is what it sounds like based upon the use of Win9x machines you mentioned.) If that is the case, then you will be unable to get the WinXP machines to see the Samba Server (or a Windows

When I run "net groupmap list" I get the following: Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-186220259-3826000728-3192352269-7033) -> domainadm But when I go to log in to the domain with "user1" on a winxp machine, the

Samba compiled version to rpm package
Hi ! I'm runing a linux redhat 7.2 box with samba 2.2.4. I've downloaded the samba source in order to install it with the needed compilation options (--with-smbwrapper --with-automount --with-smbmount --with-pam ...). Samba is now up and running but I would like to build an rpm with this compiled version. Any idea of how to transform this samba compiled version to a rpm package ?

Can't join Samba PDC from Win2k
I am trying to make my Samba server act as a domain controller, but I can't join the domain. When I go into Windows 2k and I right click the computer, the properties button, and try to make it a part of the domain, it asks me for a user account, and a password. I am not sure what user account to type in here. What user account do I type in? Below is my smb.conf file. I followed the howto from

Mounting encrypted WinXP shares with smbmount
I've been having problems mounting WinXP shares with Samba 2.2.7a & 2.2.8. I attribute this to WinXP using encrypted passwords, but I've set my smb.conf file with "encrypt passwords = yes" and despite a lot of searching, can't find any other option or flag that might help. Any suggestions? Thanks.

clarification needed: $ in machine name?
Hello, Sorry to be a pest, but I need to try to get some clarification of how the machine name works when setting up a machine account on the Samba server. The Samba How-To page http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/samba-pdc.html#id2536400 talks about the "common error" of including the $ in the machine name on the server machine. However, all of the

Samba encrypt passwd
Hi, I have samba installed on my Linux system (Red Hat 7.2), and Windows 98 on another PC as a Samba client. Samba works great if PlainTextPassword is enabled. However, if PlainTextPassword is disabled on Windows client, connection to the Samba shares no longer accepted. I believe I've done everything in order to make encrypt passwd working: * I converted /etc/passwd to

Slow vipw and fast pwd_mkdb
Hello, could somebody to comment PR bin/51148? It is suggestion how to pass a value of cache size to pwd_mkdb when we are doing vipw or such. It can give a greate speed-up when master.passwd is really big (and sometimes it is). Appropriate cache size can make process 10 to 100 or more times faster. I gave the results of measurements in that problem report. Thanks in advance! SY, Alex

Configuring Samba
I am still having some troubles getting samba to work. I have installed samba and it seems to be fine from the server point of view. However, my client can see the server in the Network neighborhood, but I get network path not found. The server and the client are on different sub-nets. Both the client and the server are using DNS to resolve names. Both are resolvable. They use FTP between
