RAV for Samba (Linux i386)
Just wondering if anyone has thoughts (good or bad) about this product
(RAV AntiVirus for Samba (Linux i386))...or any other?
I have a client that wants to have A/V *on* their samba server, rather
than just scanning the shares from a WS.
Any comments regarding ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION and SAMBA are gratefully
welcome!
TIA

Virus Protection ... Which one...?
Hi all
I've found a few different packages (RAV, Kaspersky,Vexira, Clam ...)
which offer Anti-Virus features for Linux servers. It looks like RAV
specifically supports Samba servers.
My question is:
Can anyone relay their experiences / opinions / thoughts about which one
would work best in a multiple-server environment (~100 Windows Clients)?
Thanks in advance -- all comments are

attempt to access beyond end of device and livelock
Hi Dongyang, Yan,
When testing BTRFS with RAID 0 metadata on linux-3.3, we see discard
ranges exceeding the end of the block device [1], potentially causing
dataloss; when this occurs, filesystem writeback becomes catatonic due
to continual resubmission.
The reproducer is quite simple [2]. Hope this proves useful...
Thanks,
Daniel

SPOOLSV and XP PRO
Hi All
I recently began having issues where there would be a runaway SMBD
process listed in TOP, having a Pri of around 25, and using 70 to 95%
CPU indefinitely.
IPTRAF reports around 600kbps constantly in and out from the subject
workstation, with nothing going on - on the workstation. This traffic
is parallel to the runaway SMBD process ... the traffic dies when the
SMBD process is

firefox and D state
Previously when firefox went catatonic
to the point that I could not even scroll,
its CPU usage had gone to 100%+.
Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space)
or sometimes kswap... has process state D,
uninterruptable sleep.
Any suggestions on how to deal?
I often have a lot of tabs open,
so discovering the right one was hard enough before.
Usually, it was something relatively new,

MRTG + Samba
Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has pointers for graphing data from Samba using
MRTG. I already have MRTG graphing things like signal strength (cisco
aironet pci), total kbps in/out each interface, mem and disk i/o usage.
I'd like to graph, for example, average number connections over time; or
maybe logins per hour .... or failed logins per hour.
I know MRTG's requirements for input

Experiences with Word 2000, SmartSuite 9
Using WINE 20010323 under a stock Mandrake 7.2 system.
Word 2000 seems to work but won't save files. If the file exists,
it just says, ``file exists'' [OK]. If you save anywhere fancy
like ``My Documents'' it says this is not a real filesystem location
[OK]. If you specify a drive and path (h:\filename.doc) it tells you
that this is an invalid filename, please check it [OK].

IBM x226 lockups, convert CentOS to RHEL 3.0
I have a friend who has been having an intermittent problem with his
nice, shiny new IBM x226 server. It's a Xeon processor, 1.5Gb RAM,
hardware RAID controller running CentOS 3
The system will will sometimes run for a couple of weeks, then simply
lock up -- nothing on the console, no response to pings, no "caps-lock"
lights, no kernel panic indicators, nothing in the logs to

Rapid transfers cause kernel panic
Our site has been experiencing problems with Samba causing kernel panics
under heavy use. We are running Mandrake 7.0 and Samba 2.0.6. We are no
longer using the distro included with Mandrake - we actually downloaded
the 2.0.6 release and recompiled. Downloading from Samba shares causes no
problems - and downloads are frequent and heavy - but uploading similar
amounts of data leaves a catatonic

Joining WinXp to Samba PDC
After trying to get WinXP (Pro) to try and find my domain so I can log
on I've finally done it, but now when I try and join my WinXP client to
the domain, windows asks me to enter the username and password of an
account with permission to join the domain.
Now which account would this be?? root doesn't work, neither do my other
samba users.
Do I have to create another user or something?

Samba 3.0 + AD + OpenLDAP
Hi everyone!
I've already deployed samba-2.2.7a-2 and enabled openLDAP support. I
now have a machine configured as a domain controller authenticating all
windows users via openLDAP. openLDAP is also authenticating all of our
linux users.
I would like to install Exchange2000 on a windows2000 machine so our
windows users can do calendaring (sendmail already handles all of our
email needs).

LDAP Filter Problem
I was wondering if anyone could help me with this one. I am having trouble
getting LDAP and samba working properly on my Debian Woody box. I am using
OpenLDAP 2.0.27-3 and the unsable packaged Samba version 2.999+3.0 and am
using the samba.schema for my LDAP database.
Whenever I try to join the network using either W2K or smbclient the LDAP
debug log shows that the following filter is being

I try to log into my server from a W2K machine I get the following in my

The log file shows that Samba successfully retrieved the root posixAccount
record and the log displays some of the data (i.e. home directory) that is
stored for root in LDAP. The

I have read over the lists and search the web, I know this question has
been asked before, but I've not been able to fix my problem so I'll ask

samba, openldap, smbldap tools
Hi-
I'musing the smbldap tools to create ldap entries for user logins through
samba. I was just wondering if anyone knew what format userPassword is
stored in. Is it an md5 hash? Thanks!!

win2k usernames with spaces
Hi all,
one of the win2k clients of my network uses an ID with
one space inside, e.g. "jack smith". I succeeded in creating a
Linux user with such a name, but have troubles in adding him to
the smb users.
Any suggestion?
PS Running RH 8.0 & Samba 2.2.5 When i had RH 6.2 & Samba ?.?.? the
trick worked out.

clearcase and samba
FYI:,
I'm fairly new to samba (a couple of months now), and have experimented -
unsuccessfully - with getting it
to work with clearcase. Does anyone have a how-to, or a list of gotcha's for
setting up clearcase with samba?
Thanks in advance for any information you can send me.
Ozzie,
