"force group" not working with shared directories
I'm trying my darnedest to set up a samba server to share some directories
for certain user groups. Several of the shares will be housing databases
(incl. MS Access) which will be accessed by several users, often at the
same time, and thus need to deal with both file-locking and group
ownership.
I have read that I need essentially the following in my smb.conf file:

MS Word document window disappearing in 2003 & 2007 versions
Hi
Regularily, I will 'lose' a Word document window. It happens when both single and multiple documents are opened. I will first explain the 2 document case.
If I open 2 documents, I can see this fact by looking at the 'window' menu; there, it will say that there are 2 documents open. I can see one document, on screen, but when I try to activate the document that is not seen,

Roaming Profiles Refuse to Load on MS Windows Clients
I am unable to get roaming profiles to work correctly when using a Samba
3.0.1 server with Windows 2000 and XP Pro clients. The MS Windows
clients will only load the default profile but will stubbornly refuse to
load their profile from the Samba server, even though when the user logs
off, their profile is correctly written to /home/samba/profiles/username.
I have even tried the following

Some random thoughts
Dear all,
I hope you will forgive me for posting without lurking, and indeed,
without even being subscribed to the list.
Let me first say that efforts such as Ogg shows there is still a lot of
good in mankind, this is truly a great effort!
While I haven't been lurking, I've been looking through the archives to
see if this stuff has been discussed before, and I have also tried to read

FW: Input/output error
Rahul,
I just start experiencing the exact same problems on one of my
RedHat 7.3 servers. So far it has been about once a week. The first
time this happened, I was lucky enough to get an error in the error log,
and it turned out to be from an old kernel bug (kernel BUG at
journal.c:406!) I upgraded from 2.4.18-3smp to 2.4.18-27.7.xsmp, but
the problem came back, this time with no errors in the

Bug in g++ 2.95.4 (Pointer to member functions)
Hi,
I think I have discovered a bug in FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE's system C++ compiler:
% gcc -v
% Using builtin specs.
% gcc version 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]
Here is a stripped down example that can be used to reproduce the bug:
// ----------- begin bug.cpp -----------
#include <iostream>
class Class {
public:
void M1 (void) { cout << "M1" << endl; };
void M2

Filelocking and rquotad
Hi,
Can someone give me some pointer or links to understand how Filelocking and
rquotad works on NFS ?
I searched a lot on google , didn't get any good articles on that.

Problems with ext3
Hello,
I converted one of my servers to ext3 and load average
numbers went up. Now they are ~2-3 while on ext2 LA
was <0.4.
And I'm constantly seeing processes and kjournald in D
state. vmstat confirms that. But even in such LA CPUs are
~99% idle.
What can be wrong?
RedHat 7.1 kernel 2.4.18-18.7.xsmp. SCSI cards: Compaq
RAID array controller (cciss) and Q Logic ISP1020 (isp_mod).

No filelocking at "shared-mailboxes" dictionary?
Using imapsync I changed many ACLs on many accounts simultaneously in
four concurrent IMAP-sessions.
I started with an empty file "shared-mailboxes". But after the sync the
file "shared-mailboxes" has been crashed. I found broken lines and I'm
missing some entrys.
Is it possible that there's no filelocking on that file?
I used the ext3 filesystem.
That's

Change Filelocking
Hi there,
is it possible and when, how - to change the filelocking-status of an opened
file from EXCLUSIVE+BATCH to another status ?
We have to open an file to write at the same time from different pc's into
this file.
For example the following smbstatus -u USER output:
Pid DenyMode Access R/W Oplock Name
DENY_DOS 0x1 RDONLY EXCLUSIVE+BATCH

Re: samba digest, Vol 1 #2006 - 24 msgs (Out of the office - Returning Monday, Jan. 6th)
I will be out of the office:
From: Monday, Dec. 23rd
Through: Friday, Jan. 3rd
I will return to the office on Monday, Jan. 6th
I will only be checking email or voicemail. Once or twice during that

there is a critical issue.

How to avoid rsyncing incomplete uploads? (best practice on fileservers?)
Hi,
some big files are regularily updated on server A.
Rsync should sync that with Server B.
If rsync starts in the middle of an upload process, will it copy that
incomplete file to Server B?
First tests showed it will. How can this be avoided?
Comments on rsync-usage with big files and very active users would be
very appreciated!
Thanks!

2GB File size limit on ext3?
I'm using RedHat 7.2 with kernel 2.4.18-26.7.xsmp and root mount using
ext3.
And I have simple test.pl script:
#!/usr/local/bin/perl

It's died when the file size is 2147483647

Semi-shaped traffic
During my tests I''m starting to feel stupid :). Traffic
shaping works quite on its own.
System: RedHat 7.3, RedHat kernel 2.4.18-18.7.xsmp, HTB
version 3.6, interfaces eth0 and eth1 are acting as bridge br0.
If TCP shaping almost works, it just exceeds limits UDP
is not shaped. Traffic flows PC=>eth0=>eth1=>PC. Statistics
shown is for just UDP traffic (1mbit of small udp

Socket Errors
I'm trying to figure out what this error means. I've looked all over the
groups and though there are people with the same errors, no one seems to
know what the error is. I'm running Samba 3.0.2 with OpenLDAP 2.0.27. It
might be related to Kerberos or to SSL. I've looked through my NMBD and
SMBD logs and found very little as to what the problem could be. I've tried

dovecot and cloudfile systems
I'm trying to store mailboxes in a cloudfile system and I am running into alot of problems using courier, between time skew, file locking and cache creation problems. I was wondering if dovecot has any problems using maildirs across a limited fuse file system.
I cant lock files,
This is accessed using the fuse library.
