Newbie questions
Hi Folks,
I am a relatively inexperienced Solaris system admin. We have Samba
version 1.9.15p8 running on our server currently. I assume that it
would be worthwhile for me to upgrade to 2.0. However, I only
generally know about how to keep Samba running, and very little about
installation since someone else installed it. Unfortunately, I can't

? bug in 'sample' (PR#8813)
I have found that specifying different "sizes" in the sample command has
a funny effect on the random sampling. The code below is a condensed
version of a function I wrote to simulate a bootstrap method. For
simplicity, I eliminated the internal bootstrap loop, but kept a
statement to draw one bootstrap sample, because this is where the
problem occurs. The output (mean(y)^2) should be

Samba client filesize problems
Filesize problems with samba client on Redhat 9 and W2k machine.
The original smbclient did this so I upgraded to the latest, it didn't
help. The server is W2k with an NTFS volume, these are video files - the
windows software breaks the files at the 2G limit, but for some
reason some are reported as 2G others as huge !!
One day I might own 25T of disk, but not today.
Anyone any ideas ?

passing a formula to coxph() along with a ...
Hello. I am making a program that allows a user to enter a formula
to be used in coxph() and then does some other stuff to it, and also allows
the user to set other options within coxph().
What is the proper way to pass a formula to a function along with a ...? I
have a function:
func <- function(coxformula, data = parent.frame(),...) {
# Cut to relevant part of function

What PRECISELY is the dfbetas() or lm.influence()$coef ?
Hello. I want to get the proper influence function for the glm
coefficients in R. This is supposed to be inv(information)*(y-yhat)*x. So
I am wondering what is the exact mathematical formula for the output that
the functions:
dfbeta() OR lm.influence()$coefficients
return for a glm model. I am confused because:
1. Their columns don't sum to zero as influences should.
2. They

Long equation in documentation
I have a long equation that I need to break in the R documentation of a package or it trails off the right hand side of the page. Here's the formula:

"Program" files
Is there any such thing as a program file in R? That is, is it possible to
compile and save code for performing data management and analytic tasks for
a given project into a single/multiple file(s) (i.e., like a script file
(S-Plus), a do file (STATA), or a *.sas file (SAS))?
Any words of wisdom or a point in the direction of some documentation would
be helpful. If it is not possible to work

Variable Descriptors
Is there a way to associate text descriptions with variables in a
data.frame?
For example...
Let's say that in my data.frame I have a variable named var1. var1
represents the responses to the question "When was the last time you saw
your physician?" When I tabulate the variable var1 I'd like the output to
be a bit more descriptive and contain the more descriptive

How to save multiple graphs into a single file
Hi,
I have searched the archives and help manuals and can not find anything
regarding how to save multiple plots/graphs into a single for example,
pdf file. There is plenty of discussion etc. about saving a single plot
to a single file, but not multiple plots to a single file. Is it
possible? I can't want to use lattice, because I have hundreds of plots.
So, to keep it simple, let's say

svyplot
Hello,
Using the svyplot () function, I have plotted four graphs that are saved in four different .png files.
I am looking for examples how to redraw the same four graphs within grid viewports so that they stay together on a page. The goal is to create one .png file that will include all four graphs (2 rows, 2 columns).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

R in batch mode
Hi Everyone,
I am a new R user and trying to run R jobs in batch mode.
Robert Muenchen (2009), in his book "R for SAS and SPSS Users", has suggested writing a small batch file like mR.bat as shown below:
"C:\Program File\R\R-2.10.0\bin\Rterm.exe" --no-restore --no-save < %1 > %1.Rout 2>& 1
Could anyone tell me in which directory or subdirectory I should
