Run a more recent kernel than 2.6.18 on CentOS?
Hi,
Usually I'm not one to complain about "old" version of the CentOS kernel
and/or software, since I appreciate CentOS' stability. So this might be
the exception that confirms the rule. I've been jumping through several
burning loops these past days to configure my little MSI Wind netbook,
and I'm currently considering going for a more recent kernel. There's no

GRUB and vga=788
Hi,
On a minimal (e. g. without X) server install, one of the first things I
do is add 'vga=788' to the 'kernel' line in /boot/grub/menu.lst, so I
can use the framebuffer in 800x600 mode and have a better readability in
console mode.
However, I tried this on my minimal CentOS 5 install, and right after
GRUB, the screen just blanks. I add that this (test) machine ran maybe a

Upgrade GTK2 from 2.10 to 2.12 ?
Hi,
I'm using CentOS 5.3 on all my desktops, and I really like it. Now I'd
like to build a few additional apps that aren't included in any third
party repo. Some of them require GTK2 2.12 to build, so I'm considering
a (careful) upgrade of this package.
General question: 1) how "safe" is it to upgrade this package? To do so,
I'd use an SRPM from Fedora. 2) What

General questions about security
Hi,
I admit I never gave security that much thought, that is, except the
most basic security rules like choosing good passwords, or reasonable
file and directory permissions. But now I have to change that, since
I'll soon have to setup a dedicated production server for our public
libraries.
I wonder where to begin. I would say first thing is get a series of

Recommendations for good CentOS 7 documentation
Hi,
I'm looking for recommendations for documentation about the
specificities of RHEL/CentOS 7.x. It can be either online or in printed
book format, and I'm fluent in german, french and english.
I have a good books about 5.x: "RHEL 5 Unleashed" from Sams,
"Foundations of CentOS Linux" and "The Definitive Guide to CentOS", both
from Apress.
Can anyone

Help setting up external drive via Firewire
I got a WD 1TB My Book with eSATA/USB/Firewire400 connectivity to backup
data on a client Centos 5.1 machine.
USB 2.0 works fine out of the box but is rather slow, Nautilus predicts
about 1+ hour to fully backup just one day's worth of data or about 100GB.
So I was hoping Firewire would be faster, which is why we got the version
with all 3 interfaces to experiment with first.

Hi,
Reading

I would advise everyone to add
exclude=xorg-x11-server-utils-7.1-5.el5_6.1
to their updates repo config.

Wiki: Howtos/Virtualization/HyperV
Hello,
I've written a couple of articles about CentOS on my personal blog that i'd like
to share.
As mentionned py pschaff on the CentOS 5 forum (
https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=30474&forum=37 ),
there could be a need of an article explaining how to virtualize CentOS 5 in
HyperV.
As i wrote my articles in french, i'm willing to translate them so

"Linux aux petits oignons" - Book about Linux, based on CentOS 5.x
Hi,
I'm currently busy finishing "Linux aux petits oignons", a practical
introduction to Linux, aimed primarily at the frustrated Windows user.
This is the first of two volumes, it's written in french, and all
examples in the book are based on CentOS. (Note: looks like I'll have to
update some screenshots to 5.3 :oD)
Usually the first question that arises is: why not

Rebuilding PHP: how do I manage updates?
Hi,
Our public library management software (PMB) runs on Apache/PHP/MySQL.
It requires some additional PHP modules to run correctly, namely:
1) php-gd
2) php-yaz
3) php-xslt
I've googled and fiddled around quite a bit, and come to the following
conclusions:
1) php-gd can be installed from extra repos (rpmforge IIRC), so this
one's no problem.
2) To install php-yaz, I have to

Is every CentOS release supported for 7 years?
Hi,
I've read some posts in the forums which seems to indicate that not
every CentOS version is well supported. Is it possible to install
CentOS 5.5 on a server and only apply security updates for 7 years? Or
is the preferred way to upgrade to each minor version? Thanks in
advance!

CentOS to support ICH9
Hi,
full ICH9 support for Centos 5 can be found
http://fs12.vsb.cz/hrb33/pub/ Take it as a workaround until CentOS 5.1
is released. I hope ICH9 to be included in this version. Support is done
by backporting from new kernel versions. Delta file is created with
mkdeltaiso from CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso, so full image can be
created with applydeltaiso.

Marvell Yukon 8056?
Greetings list-
I''ve got a server ''in the mail'' and I see now on the specsheet that it has Marvell Yukon 8056 NICs onboard. Since I cannot seem to find a HCL for Centos 5 or RHEL5 to help verify, I''d like to know if it works ''out of the box'' on CentOS 5.x or is there additional work to make it function (properly)?
