opening excel sheets slow, copying fast ?
Hello all, what is Excel doing while opening a file? There is no delay when opening the same file localy or on a windows 2000 server. But on the samba server it needs 10 seconds. But copying the same file (32K) has no delay at all. (With larger files things get worse, while coping a 60 MB file takes 8 seconds) Other mails mentioned recommended to disable oplocks, but this didn't change

Performance Issues with GBit LAN
Hi. I have 2 PC's connected with 1GBit NIC's. When I transfer a file from my File-Server(Redhat9.0, 256 SD-RAM, 300MHz PII, RTL8169 NIC, 2x Western Digital WD200JB RAID 0) to my Windows-PC(AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 1024 MB DDR-RAM, WINXP PRO, RTL8169 NIC, 2x Western Digital WD080JB RAID 0) with Samba, i get Speeds around 8-9MB/sec. Browsing between linux boxes
My problem appears to be too simple to be addressed in the documentation, being a linux-to-linux problem. This is a mixed home lan, but the majority of file sharing is done between three linux boxes. All three have a public directory, but the one on box1 is mainly used for file sharing. All of this worked well with our old Samba 2 setup, but has now gone to pieces. Two of the boxes are

Yet another charset problem
Hi, I am well aware that the charset problem has been discussed many times over. But after two days of googling and testing, I did not make any progress. I am mounting Windows XP Pro shares with french filenames on a Linux. The linux is a 2.4.27 kernel with the following settings: CONFIG_SMB_FS=y CONFIG_SMB_NLS_DEFAULT=y CONFIG_SMB_NLS_REMOTE="UTF8" CONFIG_SMB_NLS=y CONFIG_NLS=y

file corruption with write cache
Hello, FYI, i noticed that using write cache size = 131072 on a share, leads to corrupted files from some applications. Only one client is accessing the file. In particular with coreldraw this can be reproduced. Setup: Server: samba 3.0.4-SUSE Client: Windows XP Pro [raid1] comment = 1 path = /raid1 read only = No create mask = 0777 directory mask =

Poor linux client performance (comparing to XP)
Hello, I haven't found anything useful googling around so I decided to ask here. I have a Linux server running Samba on 100Mbit/s ethernet. If I connect to it using WinXP, mount some share and download files from it it reaches about 9MB/s transfer rate. Using FTP gives even higher transfer rates. BUT when I use linux to connect to (linux!) server, mount shares and download files then

Lag on network using Samba
I am using Samba for a file server and get a lag when accessing files across the network, I assume it is due to inactivity, because the first file I access takes the longest to access, and then other files I access immediatly after are much faster. If I do not access any files for a while I get the problem again. It all works well, but I would really like to get rid of this Lag when opening a

Basically, I am running a DebianGNU/Linux based machine with samba 3.0.0 as a backup server for an amount of Windows NT4 workstations. Samba on ReiserFS
Dear Listmembers, I try to work with samba (newest rpm for SuSE, 3.0.1.pre2, but that does not matter, the effect was there in 2.2.7 and 2.2.8a too) on an sufficient armed system (the system does not matter either, I have tried it on different machines) using ReiserFS (version 3.6.4-12). When accessing one share from one machine (i.e. copying two or more files at a time to or from the share)

Problem with XP after upgrade from 2.2 -> 3.0
Hello All, About 2 weeks ago I upgraded from debian woody to sarge. This included an upgrade from Samba2.2 -> Samba3.0. However since the upgrade I have problems using my Samba server from my XP (home) Laptop. The symptoms are basically "explorer" freezeing on most network browseing type actions. Or if I open a file (eg a movie). I'm pretty confident that I don't have a
