Samba Configuration and Remote Access
Let me preface by saying that I know I should take better security measures:
We have a test samba box which lies behind a linksys
router connected to a cable modem. The router forwards TCP/UDP information
on all the necessary ports (137-139, 445) to the Samba server (There is no
VPN). What we want to do is to allow remote windows clients, namely 98 and
XP to map samba

Fwd: Access to Everyone
You can force all users to be recognized as a single user. Set permissions on
the directory to
drwxrwsrws nobody nobody /home/technical
[Technical]
comment = Technical
browseable = yes
path = /home/technical
valid users = +users
force create mode = 0777
fforce directory mode = 0777
force user = nobody
force group = nobody
Works good for me . . .

Can't connect, even to myself
I have a two-node home network: a Linux machine (RH 5.0,
samba-1.9.17p4-3.rpm, also running bind as authoritative
for my home domain) and Win 95 with Client for MS Net &
File & Print sharing. Linux = calvin.home = 10.5.1.1.
Win95 = hodge.home = 10.5.1.10. Calvin is the default gateway for
the Win95 box, since I often connect via PPP to the Internet, and
I've set up IP

smbtar not working
I install Samba 2.0.7 on my HP 715-80 running HPUX 10.20. The HP server
and two PC's are connected on a local LAN. I can map network, move
files, etc. However, when I try to use smbtar I get an error. The unix
server is hobbs, the two PC's are calvin and marmaduke. The C: drive on
calvin is named drive_c and set for share r/w. I can use tar from the
cmd line on the unix 'puter to

Optimized Likelihoods
R-Users,
I'm in the process of developing some notes on optimizing likelihoods
for a class I'm teaching next term. Can anyone offer examples showing
the optimization of a complex likelihood function that they wouldn't
mind sharing using optim(). I've adapted some of the S-plus likelihood
examplesfrom the ``Guide to Statistics" and the Zip example from ``Statistical
