What is the function of nmbd?
I've got Samba 2.2.2 installed and running fine on one of our servers
(RS/6000 AIX 4.3.3 and using NT authentication), however, when I do Test #4
(from docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSIS.txt) it looks like this:
npssrv{root}#nmblookup -B npssrv _SAMBA_
querying _SAMBA_ on 173.148.200.113
name_query failed to find name _SAMBA_
The test said I should get back the IP address of our samba server. I got

Hello. I just recently upgraded to redhat 9 from 7 & everything went
smoothly except samba. Using the DIAGNOSIS.txt I get to step 3 (I
think) & execute the following command
nmblookup -B servername _SAMBA_
the return is thus

the text advises that nmbd is not installed correctly. Well I'm using

SMB/NMBD configuration troubles.
Folks,
I am stumped!
I have followed every tech tip I could find and I am still
unable to complete my SMB installation. Specifically, I fail
Test 4 and Tests 9 and 10. I believe the problem has
something to do with the NMBD configuration. Below are the
parameters of our system.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Samba -> WinXP: slow transfers, partial solution
Hello All,
I'm running Samba 3.0.24 as PDC and file server on Gentoo Linux,
AMD64, 2.6.19 kernel, 100MBit/s network, and experience quite slow
file transfers from Samba to WinXP SP2 clients: the speed is varying,
but is about 1-2Mb/s at best.
I spent quite some time investigating the issue, here are the
intermediate results:
1) This happens only when transferring _from_ _Samba_ to

SCP v. SFTP
I was comparing some traces from SCP and SFTP when transferring the same
file 200MB file between the same host pairs. Even when I put SFTP in
batch mode I noticed that I saw 403208 bytes from the receiver in
comparison to 3368 bytes with SCP. I've attached the relevant output
from tcptrace below (the b->a column is the return side of the trace).
Mostly I'm just curious as to what

Help with R Installation on Debian 2.2.19 (old stable/potato)
Hi all,
I hope this is the correct list to post such a question.
I was trying to install the R-project on Debian and encountered significant
problems with the same.
The main problem is the installation of the libc6 package. I need this
package in order to install the R-core package. However, the libc6 is
dependent on the libdb1-compat package, which just refuses to install on my
server.

Hi. First of all, congratulations on the nice job. I downloaded your
Debian packages for the libraries and ogg123, but the dependencies are
wrong: the stable version of Debian (potato) ships with libc6 version

FLAC: getting compression level using metaflac
Why isn't the compression level added in a metadata block by the flac
encoder itself (just like the encoder version)? In this way all programs
that read the file can see what compression level was used.
thx

No longer able to browse windows share via Nautilus
I used to be able to browse the windows shares on the network through
Nautilus. I can see them as computers, but when I click on them, it
fails. (I'm on Ubuntu 6 LTS, AMD64)
About 3 months ago, this failed. But, the windows boxes can all still
access my shares on my Linux box.
I was going through the trouble shooting, and found this out, but I'm
not sure what to do next.
