Encrypted passwords for Windows 2000
Does anyone Know the procedure for Windows 2000 workstation, in order to not
encrypt passwords.
What I needed is something similar to the transcription I make below that
works for windows nt4 and 98.

Windows 2000 and encrypted passwords
I have a mixed network of Win95, Win98 and Unix machines. I
am using Samba very happily. I would like to add a Windows
NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 client machine to the network, but
don't know how to turn off the password encryption. I am
currently editing the registry on the Win98 machines. If
someone can tell me how to edit the NT 4.0 and Win2000
registry I would appreciate it.
Thanks,

migrating to encrypted passwords
I have an old Samba network that uses unencrypted passwords. At the time,
the posts were running win95. These days they are running win98 for the
most part, but introducing new machines onto the network means fiddling
with the EnablePlainTextPassword registry key.
So currently, all the machines use plain-text passwords. I want to modify
them all to use encrypted passwords. Naturally, I want to do

Windows98 & SMB
I have a question about Win98 and Samba. Is there a registry fix similar to
the WinNT plaintext passwd that needs to be performed? Win95, and WinNT can
see Linux via Netbios, but the same machine, running Win98 cannot see the
Linux box. I am running the most current version of Samba. The WinNT box
can see the 98 machine fine. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Please let me know if

win2000 and samba
Hi,
We have a samba server 2.2.4 in a RH 6.2 Linux system. I should say that
the samba server is working well except for a win2000 workstation. For
this win2000, the user can mount network drive to the samba server, e.g.
H: to \\sambaserver\username, it asks the password, if entered correctly.
it is connected. No problem at all. However, if the user reboots the
win2000, the poblem comes.

I've got a working samba setup on a debian linux server. Existing
windows boxes are win98 with unencripted passwords. They only need to
see the exported directories on the samba server. All the networking
is working. (dns, dhcp, ping, internet access, etc )
Anything I do on my new XP Pro box or in samba.conf gives the error

Windows 2000 patch for passwords
Hello, I'm a new subscriber and hope I don't break any rules.
We have just bought some new PC's pre-installed with Windows 2000. On
our previous installations (NT and 95/98) we applied the
EnablePlainTextPassword registry patch to allow our PCs to communicate
with our Unix server and other systems - no problem. Is there a similar
patch for Windows 2000? We can't communicate,

SAMBA rejecting passwords from Win98 clients - the fix
There have been several postings about this phenomenon and we too
fell into it when we introduced Win98 clients onto the network.
Somewhere on the web I found the answer:
By default Win98 sends passwords to a server encrypted, and by
default SAMBA compiles with encrypted passwords switched off.
Therefore the password one types in from a Win98 client is received
by SAMBA in an encrypted form.

WIN 98 - Plain passwd?
i'm looking for an answer to the problem WIN98/samba-connection. It
shows the same failure as shown by WinNT unless the change of Registry
to EnablePlainPasswd. Is there an answer where the entry
"EnablePlainPasswd" should be by WIN98? Enable encryoptedPasswd in
smb.conf brought no solution.
Thanks an many greetings

Win98 Password Stumbling Block (Resolution)
For those of you that have had/are having problems getting Win 98 clients to
correctly authenticate, I have identified a stumbling block which I had to
deal with. Specifically, EnablePlainTextPassword *must* be a DWORD value.
In following the instructions found here,
http://us1.samba.org/listproc/samba/October1998/0321.html and on the
Microtheft web site, I installed the ptxt_on.inf file from the

If samba isn't authenticating win98 clients, esp. if you get a password
request for IPC$, try editing the win98 registry.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSup and
add a new DWORD entry. Name it EnablePlainTextPassword and set it to 1.
The capitalization of VNETSup may be different but the rest is exactly as I
found it on my system. After a reboot of the

A question ...
Hi,
I'm running windows 98 on my workstation and there're couple of unix boxes
around, they're BSDI, SOLARIS which are all configured to run SAMBA. One
strange thing is that everytime I try to get into my unix home dir under
win98 workstation, I will be asked for a password, but no matter what
password I put in, I won't be allow to go in.

Our server name is "ALPHASERVER4000" our client name is "PC3"

We can see with the NT browser "ALPHASERVER4000" but if we double click on
it a password is requested.
We tried with Regedit with all this options.

password key in Windows XP
We are using SAMBA 2.2.4 to support a large community of Windows users. The
latest deployment of PC's come with Windows XP, and we need to disable
Password Encryption on those to use SAMBA. We need help in locating the
"EnablePlainTextPassword" key.

Logging in from Win98
Hi.
Have FreeBSD and Samba 2.05a with
lots of Win95 rev 2 clients. With the
EnablePlainTextPassword=1 registry
setting on the Win95 boxes I my students
have been logging in fine.
We now have a few Win98 boxes I'd like to
connect, but I can't log in - I get refused
at the IPC$ share. I can log in if I use
rhosts, however I don't want to do this for
security reasons.

Win98 and Samba
Has any tried to connect to a samba server while using Win98 beta 2 as a client?
I keep getting incorrect username/password errors in the samba log file and am unable to either map a drive or connect to a shared resource.
With debug level set to 4 on the samba serve the main error seems to be error in packet at line 129 for cmd=117 (or something like that).
If anyone else finds a fix for this,
