Using ssh as a wrapper
Has anyone tried to wrap your SMB session inside another TCP protocol
like SSH?
I'm trying to sync files across two linux machines but my broadband
provider is blocking SMB and port 139 traffic.
If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

authentication problems samba -> PDC
Hi,
I have a samba installation on a sun E250. It works in
servermodus to authenticate users with a Windows-PDC.
Now I've the problem when a user connects to a networkdrive
on the sun, sometimes it works, but sometimes it fails.
then he would ask to input his password again and after 3
times his account is deactivated on the PDC.
in the logfile from the pdc I see during a connect

Subsetting data frames without a loop
I KNOW this should be easy, but I'm stuck.
My data frame consists of multiple observations from each of a number of
stations, and what I would like to do is create another data frame that
contains all the variables of the first, but only rows where a certain
variable is at its maximum for the station.
So, for example:

A couple of CentOS 5.1 issues
I've finally made the switch to CentOS 5.1 (I had been running 4.6).
So far, so good, but I do have a few issues.
First, I can not find kermit (or ckermit) in any of the repos (base,
extras, centosplus, rpmforge). On my 4.6 systems, /usr/bin/kermit
was provided by the package ckermit in the base repo. That package
appears to be no longer available. Any ideas where I could find a

extending qemu-dm
Hello,
I''m working on a project and trying to pass through a PS/2 mouse + keyboard
to a hardware VM. I''ve played with numerous things (including the obvious,
using USB), but after finding no alternative, it seems like the best way to
approach this would be to modify qemu-dm to pipe through data from
/dev/input/eventwhatever to the keyboard/mouse that qemu provides (and then

removing daylight savings in R
Hi all,
I've been having some trouble with times in regards to daylight savings in R
version 2.8.1. I have an ORACLE database that R is importing data in from,
for the 2am and 2:30am time intervals for the dates that daylight savings
starts the times are getting read as NA values into R. I'm also finding that
if I open a R workspace from version 6.2.2,the datetimes are

Looking for Newsletter Stuff
Hey
I want to start the next Newsletter early so it can be a little more
relaxed. The next release will be the 1. April.
I really need someone to *interview*, just drop me a mail and I will
send you a few questions. This can be anyone from the community that has
some sort of CentOS install.
And then I want to introduce a new section called DeskShot where users
can show off their workplaces.

How do I get rid of vfb?
Hi all,
I’m running Xen 4.1 on a couple of NetBSD dom0s and NetBSD’s pkgsrc provides both the xl and xm tools for working with Xen 4.1. I understand that xl is the new way of doing things, but I can’t get it to create my guests the way I want and the main symptom of this is that the text console isn’t available.
When I create a guest with xl it starts up qemu-dm (which xm doesn’t do) and I get

Slow pkginstalls due to long door_calls to nscd
Hi all,
I am installing a zone onto two different V445s running S10U4 and the
zones are taking hours to install (about 1000 packages), that is, the
problem is identical on both systems. A bit of trussing and dtracing has
shown that the pkginstalls being run by the zoneadm install are making
door_call calls to nscd that are taking very long, so far observed to be
5 to 40 seconds, but always in

Problem setting TMPDIR on the fly
Hi folks,
I'm having a spot of bother with tempdir(). If I set the environment
variable TMPDIR in my shell prior to invoking R it works as expected:

TMPDIR
"/eurotempest/tmp/R"
> tempdir()

However if I don't set it prior to entry, but attempt to set it from

Saturating float-to-int casts
I have encountered a need for float-to-int casts that saturate to
min/max when the value is out of the range of the target type. It
seems that there is no intrinsic to do this, currently, but on IRC it
was pointed out that a patch [1] has been proposed to implement this
functionality in exactly the way that I was looking for.
It looks like the discussion has died out but I was hoping maybe to

Q: Suggestions for long-term data/program storage policy?
Dear list,
we are a statistical/epidemiological departement that - after a few
years of rapid growth - finally is getting around to formulate a
general data storage and retention policy - mainly to ensure that we
can reproduce results from published papers/theses easier in the
future, but also with the hope that we get more synergy between
related projects.
We have formulated what we

"new" computers and monitors
Until recently, I had a 32-bit machine with one monitor running fedora.
The later editions of fedora didn't like it, so I switched to CentOS.
Now I have two 64-bit machines and two monitors and a CenturyLink router.
Also a KVM switch that I have not taken out of the package.
My main machine has two video connections
and two ethernet connections, eth0 and eth1 .
I've never had more than

start_form_tag n00b question
Hi,
I''m wondering if there is any way to specify the id of a form tag with the
start_form_tag helper. I''ve tried playing around with ", id=>"marginForm" "
and also inclosing both the action variable and id variable in curley
brackets. The Rails API doesn''t off much help for a n00b like me. It''s
probably really easy but any help you guys

R project global options file
Hello R-help,
I currently have R-project 3.4.2 and R-studio 1.1.383 installed on some of our universities computer labs. Since the installation of Visual studio the default version of R installed has changed to the version installed by VS. Users can change the default R version: found in R studio global options but users need to do this every session. Is there a file or

I have been trying to write a function for the following problem:
Suppose I have three vectors a,b,c of different lengths:

if we define a table for example:
and define the fn(x) <-function{..sum(argument)..}
where x<-c(a,b,c) so that we can maximise fn(x) as:
