subshares ?
hi all...
i have what seems a simple question regarding subshares, for lack of a better term...
say i have a share with specific user/group permissions and a directory inside the share that i would like to add different user/group permissions...
this is an example of my smb.conf file to illustrate
[driveA]
path = /samba/driveA
browseable = Yes
writeable = Yes
valid users = PDC+groupA

Which list for general help?
Hello, I am having enormous difficulty in getting samba to work correctly on the
local network when the local network is on eth1.
I have never had any trouble with samba when I used eth0...
Here is my routing table...

Samba - Problem Connecting PCs
Hi,
I want to setup Samba as a new PDC. I followed the instructions on IBM's
site (http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/esdd/tutorials/samba/index.html)
The problem I currently have is that Windows 9X boxes can't connect to the
Mandrake 9.1 Bamboo box.
However, I can make connections on localhost to localhost using smbclient
//localhost/share -U username
I've tried a couple of different

UDP Floods (possibly from nmbd)
Hi,
I'm new to this list but not to Samba.
I've recently been having problems with Samba that I have not
encountered (ever).
I cannot determine what the cause is but an hour or so into my dialup
connection, my machine starts flooding the first dns server in
/etc/resolv.conf with dns requests. I know it's samba responsible for
the flooding because as soon as I kill both smbd and nmbd

cross subnet browsing (win Xp problem)
I've got to networks connected through leased line, routing set between
networks, WINS server running on Samba.
There's one primary samba server, and Win98/WinXP clients connected to it.
First network with samba server works great with win98 and winxp.
Second network also works ok with win98 clients, but when I connect Winxp
it can't even open "my network places" and show

smbpasswd not installed wit 2.2.5 and 2.2.6
Hi everybody,
does somebody know why when I install a samba 2.2.5 or 2.2.6, it doesn't put
the file which contains the password samba, i.e. /etc/samba/smbpasswd .
With the result that when I have just created a user linux and that I want
to add it under samba "smbpasswd user" it lets me enter the password but
failed when it wants to reach the base. Somebody has an idea?
thanks

How important are oplocks?
Hello,
I'm wondering just how critical it really is to turn off oplocks. It appears
that not only Windows 2k server, but also Netware 5 and above defaults to
having these enabled.
I just spoke with two software companies running databases off of file servers
(no database server, just MDAC stuff), and they had never heard of it, much
less require it to be disabled. Everything I've

The password is incorrect. Try Again
This is probably an easy one. I have just setup Samba on my Debian 2.0
system with kernel 2.0.34. It was extremely easy set up, great job Samba
and Debian people. My problem is that I can see both of my Debian computers
in Network Neighborhood but can not log in to both of them. The one I can
log in to is Debian 1.3 with 2.0.33 on it. When I double-click on the
Debian 2.0 machine it prompts me for

New users cannot log on, current users okay
I am having a problem with the Samba server that I run. Simply, new users
added to the system cannot log on to the PC's that are controlled from the
Samba server's domain. Users that are already on the system and have been
working for some time seem to be unaffected.
I suspect that the problem may well be related to the 'minor' problem we
experienced with the server the other

Using win2k non-pdc as password server
Hi,
I'm trying to get Samba on a Linux box to work. Authentication via user
level worked fine, but what I really want is it to take user authentication from
a win2k box, which is our "primary local server". The win2k box is not a pdc,
(the real pdc is 2000km away, close to the polar circle), but according to
the docs it doesn't have to be.
So in smb.conf I put:

Samba-to-samba migration
Hi all,
I have a Samba box (Mandrake 8.1, Samba 2.2.2). I have another hard disc
that has Mandrake 9.0 + Samba 2.2.7 on it. I am looking to install this
other hard disc into the Mandrake 8.1 box and migrate everything over.
Do I need to do anything other than copy the contents of /etc/samba
(smb.conf, secrets.tdb etc) over to the new hard disc to ensure that our

What is the difference between %S, %u and %U variables in sbm.comf
Hi list,
Can someone please clarify the difference between variables %S %U %u in smb.conf?
It is not clearly defined in man smb.conf page (at least for me)
%U - session username (the username that the client wanted, not necessarily the same as the one they got).
%S - the name of the current service, if any.
%u - username of the current service, if any.
That is "session username",

We have a setup (that has worked since samba 3 was released), where we
have a windows 2000 ADC, and a debian sarge based (running all current
patches and only Debian packages (nothing related to samba/winbind is
compiled by us) samba 3.0.xx server set up with winbind/pam to act as a
domain member serving files, whilst authenticating from our Windows ADC.

chainload cdrom
perhaps the boot-from-cdrom code in Smart Boot Manager?
Bernd
>>>
No, since booting from CD-ROM requires that the El Torito part of the
BIOS is activated, which it won't be if it didn't boot from CD-ROM in
the first place.

FW: smbmount problem
Hi
Sorry about the misplaced Q
I tried to use a script that when user will logon to the machine he will
mount to smb mount (instead of fstab if it's problem)
I sow on several places the option to use on /etc/fstab this line
//server/share /mnt/home smbfs noauto,user 0 0
and I tried to put on script smbmount //server/share /mnt/home -o
username=$USER and get
libsmb based programs
