kill roaming profiles!
Greetings to everybody!
Is there any way to turn off roaming profiles and use only
local ones? In our company each of us connects to domain
from its own workstation, so as I can see there's no need
in roaming profiles.
Why I'm asking such weird question?
Because with roaming profiles Windows clients has readonly
profiles! With Policy Editor I made HKEY_Local_Machine

SAMBA Enterprise-wide solution?
Hello,
Our university has a study in progress looking at using SAMBA to
provide file/print sharing as an enterprise-wide solution.
Does anyone know of an entity that uses SAMBA to support up to or more
than 10 site locations, over 125 buildings, and supporting over 5000
workstations?

Oplocks - samba 2.2.4 & Windows 2000 server
In investigating some performance issues (elderly server with just 10Mbps
ethernet), I noticed that smbstatus reported hardly any open files with
oplocks. In particular files opened with Office 2000 & XP stay un-oplocked.
I have checked and testparm claims oplocks are enabled and manual says this
is so by default.
The clients are all Windows 2000 servers - so we have 1 samba connection with

password synchronization.
Hello,
I'm running samba 2.2 on FreeBSD 4.4. I was wondering if there was a
way to sync up the samba and FreeBSD user passwords so that when either
via the unix passwd or samba's smbpasswd program a user changes a
password it is changed through both systems? If anyone is dong this
successfully please let me know.
Thanks.
Dave.

Unix to SMB password synchronisation
I have set up a web page describing my Unix to SMB password synchronisiation
which also has the source code to the C front end and expect script used.

Note this is a Solaris specific solution - but should be adaptable to other
Unices.
Hope this helps someone ...

adding printers from netlogon script
While this doesn't relate specifically to Samba, I need to do this in a netlogon .bat file
in a Samba domain. In my network, I have a printer hooked to a JetDirect so that it is a
TCP/IP printer. Is there a way I can automatically have this printer mapped/added when the
user is logged on?

user management tool
There was talk a few weeks ago about the possibility of a Tk-based user management tool
that never happened. I'm planning on trying to do this myself. What features were to be in
the one that never materialized? What features might people want in it? To begin, the
program will only be able to do things that can be done straight through the existing
command line tools (net, smbpasswd,

using samba through a VPN
I already have an existing network that is managed by a samba PDC. In the next
few days, I will be linking another small LAN to the existing one over the
internet using openvpn. I've been told that samba (through no fault of its own)
doesn't work very well through a VPN.
For the new network, there will be a box with 2 NICs: one for the internet and
one for the LAN. This box will use

Odd high load occurance 2.2.4
I have Samba 2.2.4 installed for around 2 weeks - this seems to have fixed
the problems we had with 2.2.2 and runaway processes.
Today we had a Samba daemon runnig with a consistent 20% load (on a dual
processor SPARC with Solaris 2.6. This machine acts as our PDC & WINS
server.
I used smbcontrol to up the debug levels from 1 to 2, then 3 - at 3

netlogon script generation
Can anyone point me to a doc or a script that shows how to generate netlogon script on the
fly and supports users having multiple groups? I tried the Perl script referenced at
<http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/AdvancedNetworkManagement.html> but I believe it only
supports the user being a member of one group.

adding printers from netlogon script
I don't know the final answer BUT if you have something simmilar to a
cyber-cafe LAN (I mean, users use all the computers, and maybe some
users come back to login with the same name) then you have to install a
printer only once in a computer, loging as the administrator and
installing drivers. Then what users will have to do is JUST add the
printer without installing. I know that it's

How to send a domain wide message with smbclient?
Is there a way to send a message to all users currently logged into a
Samba domain controller? The reason why I ask is that I have a Samba
3.x.x primary/backup domain controller setup and as soon as the system
monitor detects that the primary domain controller is offline I would
like to execute a command to send a domain wide message telling all
domain users to save their work to the local

migrating local user profiles to roaming domain profiles
I have a network of 2K and XP clients that I am migrating to a domain using Samba 3 as a
PDC. I have the domain working quite well after quite a bit of tweaking. My problem is
that I want people to logon to the domain, but I also want them to keep their profiles
from their local users. How can I go about this?

Samba and logrotate from Redhat
Has anyone had any success in getting Samba to correctly restart logging
to the log files with the default logrotate setup (or even a modified one)
from RedHat? The default setup is to move the files to another location,
create a new file for Samba to fill, then send the daemons a HUP signal.
I've tried some of the options that can be used in the logrotate.d/samba
file (nocreate and

locking limit errors with Peachtree
In the samba domain I admin, one of the computers runs the Peachtree accounting
software. Today, McAfee antivirus was installed on that box (not my doing) and
now Peachtree keeps giving "Locking table limit reached" errors. Is this an
error from samba, Windows, or Peachtree? Is there a limit to the number of file
locks samba can grant at one time?

Log analysis tools
Does anyone have any log analysis tools? I'm currently configured with
"log file = /usr/local/samba/var/log.%m", which makes identifying issues
with any one client easy, but doesn't provide me with an overall picture
of what has been happening. What I'd like to be able to produce is a
report showing, for a given unit time, the total number of clients that
have connected,
