Difference between smbstatus and WINS (was WINS querying (Advance d))
Unfortunately, it appears smbstatus will only show the clients that have
accessed the shares since the last restart of the smb daemon (not a
guarantee that people will do this in our case). There appears to be a
timeout of this information as well.
WINS does keep all this information based on when the client's machine first
logs into the network, so it's a lot more accurate.

Logging in taking too long with roaming profile (not large profile issue)

Check out the logs -- this is a completely different problem. Ed and I have
been working on this for some time now, and while your solution wards off
potential future problems, it doesn't fix the current problem.
We're not having the typical 'My

WINS Retention
How does one get rid of machines from the WINS database?
They seem to hang around forever....and a restart doesn't solve it because the WINS data just gets passed around...

WINS Replication
Hey all,
Just wondering about the current status of wrepld. Back in '02 Jean
Fran?ois Micouleau was doing some work on it, but there does not appear to
be any changes to the code since that spring besides updates to the entire
tree that happen to touch the wrepld files. The Samba-HOWTO states that it
is in "active development" and I was wondering if I could help with testing

Logging in taking too long with roaming profile
Hello,
I am trying to setup a network of 5 XP computers with roaming profiles.
I've got a profile set up on the server and I can log on. The problem
is that the log in time takes about 10 mins and the log out takes just
as long. Here is a link to the log file from the samba server. I
have made comments on it to show what is happening on the terminal.

possible bug with incoming mail
I've been using Dovecot for a couple months now and am very impressed.
Thanks for a great package.
However, I have noticed a problem that I haven't been able to solve.
When a new message comes into my inbox, the last message that was
received is marked as new as well as the new one.
I originally thought this was a bug in my client (mutt) but I have
verified that the same thing

Roaming Profiles - delete profile when logging off
PDC : RedHat 7.2 // Samba 2.2.4 RedHat rpm
Clients : W2K SP1
Does anybody know how to get rid of the cached
local profiles when logging off? Since we use
FAT32 every user has access to other local replicated
profiles.
Furthermore sometimes the logon to the domain
doesn?t work the first time after logon after a cold start.
W2k claims it can not replicate/copy some files from
the users profile and

roaming profiles, printers, samba 2.2.4 & windows xp
Hi all,
we have implemented a scenario with samba as a PDC, running version
2.2.4, and clients windows XP boxes.
The scenario calls for roaming profiles, and mobility in general.
We have a problem with microsoft outlook, which saves the settings
locally, and thus every student has to visit all lab pcs in order to have
his detailed entered before he can use outlook.
Has anybody implemented

Has anyone seen this before?
I'm using samba and cups to allow NT/2k machines to print to an HP LaserJet
4000N printer. The printer works fine except for one in house program. In
this one program, all the horizontal lines that should be printed are
missing. Originally I thought this was a driver problem, but today, for no
apparent reason, it started printing the horizontal lines... but only for
the first page of each

WINS querying (Advanced)
Hi all...
I need to make a few queries to WINS, but am unsure how to do so.
'nmblookup' will allow me to enter an IP address and get information about
the machine name, domain, and username. I want to do the opposite...I would
like to have a tool that will take a username and return the IP address.
I know this information is stored in WINS somehow, and I am capable of
writing some Perl

Samba3.0Alpha21- error on logging in to KDC
Hi all,
I have just downloaded and tested with the Samba3.0 Alpha21 Release. I want
to try to create the server account in the active directory, however,
when I logged in to the KDC by "/usr/kerberos/bin/kinit
administrator@xxx.com", but error returned as
"KDC has no support for encryptions type while getting the initial
credentials" , then I can't go on for creating the

How can I restart samba?
I'm fiddling with the various configuration files to try and get Samba
working - after making changes to various files I end up rebooting [shudder]
the box to get the settings to take.
I invoke the smbd, and nmbd binaries from a root bash command line, each
with the "-D" option. I can't seem to send a "kill SIGHUP" command to the
PID I read from a "ps -ex"

no logon servers available
Hi,
I am running samba 2.2.7 as a PDC with a couple of Win2k workstations
participating in the domain. Once in a while of the workstations, I can't
access shares on the other, getting a message "no logon servers available".
Once I restart smbd and nmbd via /etc/init.d/smb stop start, the problem
goes away immediately. I tried to search in samba logs, but there were no

FYI....
I just uploaded an [S]RPM for RedHat 8.0. See

The 2.2.6-2 is only because I had to change the spec file a little
for build on RedHat 8. Many thanks to Axel Thimm for clueing
me in on the problem with the 'x' bit for files in examples/ & docs/

Printer Management
Correct me if I'm wrong. With Samba 2.2.5, there is no way to get a
group of users to manage printers so they be able to select/deselect
duplex mode, tray, etc.
Although I'm able to add a group with the Security tab and give them
appropriate permissions, it doe not work from the user side - all the
settings are still grayed out.
P.S. I use LDAP backend if that matters.

Multiple codepage support
Having searched the documentaion and the archive, and having this alluded to,
but not addressed directly, I was hoping someone here could set me straight:
I need to be able to support multiple languages for separate users: english,
simplified chinese, traditional chinese, and korean han. Is it correct that
under 2.2.x that I can only get one of those at a time, using the smb.conf
options

getent passwd fails at 20,000 users
Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number users that getent will
show? We have over 30,000+ users in our NT 4 Domain and we are testing
winbind and it's authentication process. The Linux box is Redhat 8 and
samba 2.2.5x, the default samba with RedHat 8.0. All of the users we tested
were able to get a home directory, use shares and permissions assigned. All
