wins vs. browsing, and documentation
I've been reading Chapter 9 ("Network Browsing") of the Official
Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide, and the documentation is
causing me some confusion.
Up at the very top of the chapter, it says:
WINS is the best tool for resolution of NetBIOS names to
IP addresses; however, WINS is not involved in browse list
handling except by way of name-to-address resolution.
But then

Browsing+WINS integration
We are experiencing lots of WAN-wide browsing problems, mainly because
Local Master Browsers are turned off etc. I got this idea:
When clients register their names with the WINS-server (nmbd), why not add
that name to the Domain Master Browsers (the same nmbd) browselist? This
would make it unneccessary to deal with LMBs.
Is this possible to implement?

Question about inter-domain trusts
I've looked in the recent archives and haven't really found anything
about this so...
I'm trying to establish a two-way trust relationship between two local
domains. The MS Win2k3 ADS server now trusts my Samba PDC (3.0.23c,
Linux 2.6.17) alright but when I try to use /net rpc trustdom establish/
I have a few problems. The key one is that I am /net rpc/ is unable to

Subnet not visible in Network Neighbourhood
Hi list!
I've got a debian "etch" box running samba 3.0.24.
The server is a firewall (running Shorewall 3.2.6) with five NICs:
eth0 -> DSL (it has a public IP address and it allows all the people
browse by masquerading other interfaces)
eth1 and eth3 -> bond0 (IP address is 192.168.1.1/24)
eth2 and eth4 -> bond1 (IP address is 192.168.2.1/24)
BTW, bond+ refers to an

Delete dead browse lists
I've run into this problem a few times now and still haven't figured out how to fix it without shutting down my entire network.
We get a lot of guest and transient computers belonging to different workgroups.
The gleefully add themselves to the SAMBA domain master and the SAMBA master browse never gets rid of them.
Isn't there some sort of timeout or interface where these can be

But I get the error:

WINS server DMB and LMBs not communicating across subnet to update browse lists?
Referencing: http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/network_administration_guides/samba_reference_guide/17_NetworkBrowsing_34.html
I've got two subnets (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.1.1). All the machines on both subnets are running XP Home or Pro and are all part of the same workgroup (WORKGROUP).
I've added an OpenSUSE box on x.x.2.1 and have set it as the WINS server with a very simple

Primary group is 0 and contains 0 supplementary groups
Hello!
I thought this was a mistake, sorry.
So I created the shared directories and defined which groups can access
this directory and includes the users in the defined group. However, the
user defined in the group cannot access the directory, gives access denied.
Take a look at the settings, if you can give me a direction of where my
error is.

cross-subnet browsing problems
I'm trying to set up cross-subnet browsing using Samba on a Linux box
and a Sparc UltraEnterprise with Win95 and NT Workstation clients. I'm
using the Sparc as the domain master and also as the WINS server on the
108 subnet. The Linux box is the local master on the 46 subnet. Both
are running Samba 1.9.17alpha4. I can see the conversation between the
two samba servers and the browse

Preserving destination group and owner
Hi,
I'm trying to get an rsync updating some files without changing their owner,
groups or permissions. I've read man pages etc. stating I need to use the
"--no-o", "--no-g", "--no-p" flags, something like
rsync -r --no-p --no-o --no-g source destination
While the permissions are keeped, there is something not working as
expected or I'm missing
