Samba and *groan* Windows XP Home problems!
Hi,
This has probably been covered before but after 4 hours of searching I'm
nearly at the point of throwing my XP machine out of the window!!
I have set up Samba (v 2.2.5) on my Red Hat 7.1 box. From the Red Hat box I
can see all the other computers on the network (other Linux machines, Win2k,
Windows ME and my Windows XP box), and get access to the shared drives on
them. The linux box can

Slow File transfer between Samba and Win2k
I have a Samba file server and a dual boot Win98/Win2k client. Copying file from the Client in Win98 to the Samba server gives no problems:
(I copied one 6 mb file)
Samba server -> Win98 Client 550 kb/s
Samba server <- Win98 Client 500 kb/s
But then from Samba server to Win2k Client:
Samba server -> Win2k Client 190 kb/s
Samba server <- Win2k Client 18 kb/s

Joel@HammersHome.com
Hello Joel,
Thank you very much for your reply.
I tried use the same print command under UNIX as I
have in sam.conf, it works well.
Do you have any futher ideas? BTW, could you tell me
where I find docs about print using Samba2.2.2 and
W2K?
Thanks a lot,
Grace
What happens when you print a postscript file from the
samba server directly
using the same print command as you have in smb.conf?

I have installed the following printers using the GUI printconfig
Lp0 = HP1200
Lp1 = OKI320
Lp2 = OKI321
I have shared them via samba
I can browse them using WinXP & Win2K by browsing the Linux box, looking at
the printers and double clicking to open them, all is OK you would say, No.
I have checked permissions on the /var/lpd directories and

Puppet on Windows
Hi,
I want to run Puppet on a Windows 2003 Server. I already have a
working Puppetmaster (Scientific Linux).
I installed Puppet on Windows like shown here:
http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/1/wiki/Puppet_Windows
This worked very well.
But when I want to run puppet.
puppet agent --test --debug
I get the following output: (I already tried different ruby and puppet

Network access speed.
Good afternoon all,
I have a few questions, and just joined the list and plan on staying.
I had 2 Samba servers at work, both running apache, etc, that we develop on from work and at home over a vpn.
My vpn upload speed is 25K, and at one time windows 2000 could save a document in less than 4 seconds from across the vpn using textpad.
We recently downgraded our crappy 7.1 redhat versions to 6.2

plea for sample config files : accessing samba from windows...
Hello,
I am having a lot of difficulty setting up samba (2.2.6-1) on
linux (REDHAT 7.2), and accessing from Win2k.
I have been able to get the share working for smbclient, while
on the LINUX box, but have not been able to get anything
working from a Windows box. I have done the following
after scouring the network for solutions. I have modified
the register settings on windows to allow none

incomprehesible quirk
I am really quite puzzled as to why I have to edit smb.conf every time I
want to print to the FreeBSD machine from Win2K. (Running FBSD 4.7, samba

When I log onto FBSD with username, password, I see the folders for the
printers, home, tmp, etc. but no printer. (Only 1 installed - Epson Stylus
Color 900).
I can access the shares on FBSD from Win2k, but there is no

Win2k Printing Problem
I have a problem with Windows 2000 (SP2) printing to an Epson C60 on a
Linux server (running Mandrake 8.1 and Samba 2.2.2 with Cups 1.1.12). I've
scoured the net and posts on Usenet have not yielded any helpful response.
I have 2 Win2k boxes and they both respond differently, but neither is
printing. I've installed the printer on both boxes. On one I get a

AutoCAD temp file error
I rather doubt this is a samba problem, but perhaps someone can offer a
hint to solve the issue...
Running AutoDesk Land Development Desktop (AutoCAD with add-ons
essentially). The project data files are on the Samba server. A dozen
WinXX workstations work flawlessly with this configuration (other than
typical windows issues). A win2k workstation was recently added to the
mix and it works

win2k client slow with samba 2.2.3.a - maybe a bug?
This sure looks like a bug but maybe a configuration error on my
part.
I am trying to migrate out current OS/2 Warp 4 based file server to
Samba. We have OS/2, Win98, WinNT4, and Win2k clients. I set Samba
2.2.3a up to use security = SHARE as this appears to be the closest
to what the OS/2 Warp4 based system supports. All clients are able to
access the files on the Samba service but loading

Linux server, Win2k client: Almost works, what am I missing?
Hello all.
A couple of days back I posted a question about how I could get a Win2K
client to mount a share from my linux Samba server. I was getting the
familiar "account is not authorized to log in from this station" error
on the Win2K box, despite a set-up that supposedly allowed guest logins
*and* implemented the registry hack for clear-text passwords on the
Win2k box.

Win2K Printer "Access Denied" Error
Hello,
I have a new RH 7.2 installation (kernel 2.4.7-10) with
Samba 2.2.1a and I can't print from my Win2K box. I get
an "Access denied: unable to connect" error from the
printer entry in Windows. The logs don't seem to be
helping me. Here's my smb.conf file:

new to samba
hello
I just installed redhat 7.2 and I want to get samba working. I read the man file for smb.conf but there's a question that I just can't figure out.
This is what I have :
I have a LAN with two win2k workstations and a linux box.
This is what I would like to do:
I would like to to have each user have access to a public folder and to their own home folder. How do I do that?

Win2k and Printing
man smb.conf /Access Denied (or /Unable to connect)
Turns up the "use client driver" parameter. Best way to deal with this
problem, which occurs when you have w2k and XP users who install drivers
locally and are local admins, is to not have them install the drivers
locally (use the print$ share). Second best is to use client driver =
yes, which has some side-affects but gets the job

Print Job Notification
Can anyone suggest a way to have a notification after a print job has
completed. I currently have this as my print command:
lpr -r -P%p %s; csh -c 'echo \"%J has started printing on %S\" |
/usr/bin/smbclient -U %L -M %m -I %I' &
It kind of does what I want, but notice that the message says that "Job has
STARTED printing on Printer". This is because with this

Automatic Printer Driver Downloading - Does it work?
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has gotten automatic printer driver
downloading to work?
The problem I'm seeing here is while trying to upload a printer
driver to the Samba print server using Windows 2000 or XP.
The Add Printer Driver Wizard runs ok until I click on the
Finish button, then it requires a Windows 2000 Advanced Server
CD-ROM to be installed, to get a driver out of the

Getting Win98/95 machines to connect
Hi everyone!
I'm pretty new to Samba but I've got it setup on my Linux box here and all
the Win2k machines can see it fine. When the Win2k user browses the network
they can see the Linux box double click it and then they are prompted for a
username and password. They don't enter any and click "Ok" and poof they
have access to the shared directories i have created.
