On very different journalling activity on 2 servers.
Hello Folks, We have 2 (identical hardware) busy public 2U rack servers, both have several hundred users & peak email (for example) deliveries at 300/5min during the daytime. Both servers run RAID1 over 2 EIDE disk drives. One server is fine - it never has problems - it is running RH7.3 and CPU loads are normal. The other server has constant disk activity & kjournald at CPU load of

hda: no DRQ after issuing WRITE
I upgraded my Centos 4.7 server last night. Switched from a cheaper 50$ asus motherboard to a Supermicro motherboard. I also, using dd, copied entire 500g SATA seagate drive to new 500g SATA seagate drive so as to have two copies in case something went wrong. Anyway, now I keep getting this error: Nov 21 06:08:33 server kernel: hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Nov 21 06:08:33 server

Really bad KVM disk performance
Hi Gang, I recently rented a server at a datacenter with Centos 5.7 X64, Q9550 Processor, 8GB Ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 16mb cache). They had loaded it with KVM, and installed a 30-day trial of Virtualizor as the front-end for KVM. I was so impressed with how fasts the guests ran that I want to build a few of these machines for myself. I just installed one: same Q9550 processor, 4GB

How do I check if the proper sata drivers are being loaded? If they are not what can I do other then rebuilding the kernel? Thank you in advance, Randy _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

PRI got event: HDLC Abort (6) on Primary, D-channel of span 1
I also experienced this problem and the first thing that really helped out was changing the timing in the span line of the zaptel.conf. Change it to look like this (see below) and see if it helps out. I got the error much less after doing this and eventually got rid of the error completely by removing my raid drives, installing an IDE drive, enabling DMA mode on the Hard Drive, enabling APCI in

Why does old kernel boot when new kernel installed?
I thought I'd summarise this with a proper subject line: 1. We used up2date to upgrade the kernel of a 7.2 machine that is doing far too much journalling (kjournald at 50% CPU+ often). 2. It installed fine, but when we reboot - GRUB only shows the old 2.4.7-10 although there are 3 kernels listed in grub.conf My Question is "How can we select booting to 2.4.18-24.7 when GRUB lonly lists

Long Shorewall Startup Times Revisited
Hello, With reference to the problems listed below. I too am having incredibly long start up times. I''m talking minutes here (around 5 minutes). My configuration is not complex I don''t think. We are you using ldap too and the settings are bellow. The network is up as I''m restarting shorewall whilst the machine is running. Any suggestions? Is there no way to

sync slowness. ext3 on VIA vt82c686b
When I copy a file(13Megs) from /home/ to /tmp/, sync takes almost 2 minutes. When I copy the same file to /usr/local/, sync returns almost right away. Both filesystems are ext3 and are on the same harddrive. When sync is running, the harddrive light stays on but I don't hear it doing anything. dmesg doesn't show any errors either. Below is the `time` output for each command. If you

kjournald tuning
While investigating erratic performance on one our our servers, I'm getting some very odd performance stats coming from vmstat. What initially appeared to be happening is the machine goes into a hard loop in some mod_perl webserver code. Now there still may be an issue with the code, but my code examinations show no possible way this could be happening, but what I'm writing to you

Setting CDROM parms
My apologies in advance for asking such an elementary question. I called myself searching the Installation Guide and Deployment Guide, with no success. The situation is that I bought a Lite-On ATAPI iHAP122 that will not burn DVDs unless I use hdparm to turn dma off. I bought that drive because it was a rare beige drive. Until I can find a decent DVD burner and/or get a Windows machine put

Am I getting the best performance?
Okay, I've been chasing performance for a while now. I have no idea if I should be trying to get better performance or if I'm getting all I can out of my hardware. Here is the information: /sbin/hdparm -I /dev/hdd /dev/hdd: ATA device, with non-removable media Model Number: ST328040A Serial Number: 7BY034XB Firmware Revision: 3.07 Standards:

MORE: On very different journalling activity on 2 servers.
At first our datacentre techies thought that lilo was forcing the old kernel. They altered lilo.conf & rebooted. It now seems that although the grub config file shows all 3 kernels & the newest is the default - when the system reboots - only the oldest kernel shows on the GRUB screen & only the oldest kernel boots! What can we do to get the newest kernel to boot instead? Regards,

Re: Ext3-users digest, Vol 1 #793 - 9 msgs
It is most likely that your grub.conf file is _different_ than menu.lst. grub.conf is just a dummy symlink made by RH under /boot/grub as well as under /etc to make peoples lives easier. (Or harder as the case maybe) If the contents of grub.conf is what you want to use for your bootup listing.. cd /boot/grub mv menu.lst menu.lst.bak cp grub.conf menu.lst rm grub.conf #optional step ln -sf

(Sorry, Outlook webmail prohibits me from proper replying/quoting) >it has the nice effect that you can load the El Torito >CD-ROM driver. Which seems logical if you boot a kernel (like Linux, or Memdisk with an imagefile), but not when doing a local boot (diskette/harddisk) In other words: boot from cdrom, and if you then load a disk-image, eltorito.sys should load. If not loading a

UDMA2.SYS author now worked around it, it seems you do something with "DPTE" in isolinux.asm but not using it (probably for memdisk or direct floppy/harddisk emulation?). also something about EDD v1.1 and v3.0 specifications and setting bits to 1. Anyway, the driver works now on: BIOS -> cdrom ->

lapply and boxplots with variable names
Hi all, I have a dataset with several variables, each of which is a separate column. For each variable, I want to produce a boxplot and include the name of the variable (ie, column name) on each plot. I have included a sample dataset below. Can someone tell me where I am going wrong? Thank you for your help, Shawn Morrison # Generate a sample dataset var1 = rnorm(1000) var2 = rnorm(1000)
