Windows XP connects as guest instead of letting me choose the username / password
Hi,
I suspect this is more of a WinXP issue, but since it drives me mad,
I'll ask anyway.
What I want:
In Windows XP network neighborhood, select my samba server, select one
of the shares, then have a dialog asking me for the respective
Samba-username & -password to access the share.
What I get:
I get a dialog with the username "Guest", greyed out, asking me for a

Hello!
One little problem when accessing Samba shares that require password
authentication. I have WinXP. When clicking on the name of share in the
Network Neighbourhood, I get prompt for password. But the user name
field is greyed out and is preset to "guest". So I can't specify needed
username. If I try to access password protected share created on some
other Windows machine, then

Help a newbie (please!): Samba and WinXP in a non-PDC environment
Hi all... looking for some assistance with my first Samba setup.
The setup: On a small (five-computer, mixed Win2k and WinXP pro) LAN, I'd
like a share on my FreeBSD server to be available for storage. No printing,
no PDC, no individual user directories or password protection -- just a big
ol' slice of storage for everyone to access equally.
I've come close, (the share shows up

XP Pro And Samba
I have a win98 peer to peer network using a Samba server for file sharing.
There 6 Machines on the net. I'm adding a XP Pro and cannot see the neighborhood network. I can get out to the Internet. I've made sure the workgroup name is correct and the XP is not set as DHCP. Our router is the DHCP. Is there something different about setting up the user for the XP Pro? I'm creating

WinXP and Samba PDC Auth Problem
I have been running a Samba PDC with Samba version 3.0.0
on Redhat 7.3 for quite some time. My WinXP Pro SP2 system is part
of the domain and everything has been working just peachy. And then,
of course, I had to tinker with it.
I upgraded the linux box to Whitebox Linux 3.0, a derivative
of Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0. It comes with Samba 3.0.7. After
installing and updating everything, I

I'm running Samba 2.2.5 on HP-UX 10.20.
I've recently started adding WinXP (and 2000) clients to my network.
Here's my issue: (It seems to effect both the XP & 2000 machines)
I installed a WinXP machine on the network. I was able to add a
bunch of samba-networked printers to the Xp machine.
I recently added 2 new printers to the network. I added the

Windows XP suddenly loses access to servers
Hi, All.
I hope everyone's enjoying the nice weather.
I am called the system admin here, but really I just fell into the job
over the past 25 years.
Is there a way to search the archives?
My problem is that I've suddenly got 6 WinXP desktops that can access
only 1 of my 5 smb servers, 4 of which run on Linux and 1 on SCO Unix.
The 1 they can access runs Linux with Samba version

win-xp guest after reboot: could not open disk image /dev/sr0: mo medium found and extreme sluggisch
Hi,
win-xp won't boot after installation. The CD is needed to boot from. How can I
convince win-xp to boot?
That's what I did:
==================
I installed win-xp guest on debian squeeze:
# virt-install --connect qemu:///system --name winxp-prof --ram 1024 \
--disk path=/dev/vg-levo/winxp-kvm,size=10 \
--network bridge:br0 --vnc --os-variant winxp --cdrom /dev/sr0

Win XP 'Network path was not found' Error when connecting to Samba share
I am running a network with 2 XP boxes and 1 RH8.0 box running Samba 2.2.8a (bin pkg). I have also tried Samba 2.2.5 (the included distro ver.) and Samba 3 (not in depth though).
I have added my WinXP username/passwd to smbpasswd and to the Linux User list. I've tried encrypt passwords and have even tried playing with the 'gpedit.msc' in Win XP to turn off encryption to 3rd party

I'm having a problem with my XP & 2000 pc's, with printers.
During the initial installation and configuration of these machines,
everything is fine. But any printer added to the network AFTER the
initial config of the winXP & win2000 pc's, isn't available to these
machines.
So... if I add any printers to my network, I can't use them with my

Odd, slow Windows XP client download behavior
I recently set up a Samba server (3.0.24-6etch9) on my debian etch system.
While accessing its shares through 1GBit Ethernet with a Windows XP SP2
client there's some real odd behavior:
In one direction (uploading files from WinXP -> debian) the speed is just
great, no matter what, around 35MiB/s.
In the other direction (downloading a file WinXP <- debian) it idles at
around 120KiB/s
