If I use smbmount and copy a file > 2GB in size, I get an error: "8720 File

I'm using kernel 2.4.18 (smp) with Redhat 7.3.

Why a copy of smbd for each smbmount mountpoint?
When an OS/2 or Win9x client logs into a (Linux) Samba v2.0.6 server
the running smbd spawns a copy of itself. That second instance of
smbd then handles all the shares for that client machine.
In contrast, a Linux client which does multiple smbmounts (also Samba
v2.0.6) will cause the server to spawn a copy of smbd for *each*
smbmount mountpoint. This has the potential for using up a lot more

smbmount discontinued?
In a past thread I've notice that smbmount (and mount's suport for
it) will be discontinued and smbclient should be used insted.
Sorry if the question is too lame but I use it in some of my systems
now and I think I'll have trouble porting then to smbclient.
Is smbmount been removed because it relays on kernel smb support?
Samba will not need smb support in kernel in the

smbmount deprecated - what about Windows 9x?
Hallo,
I've just installed Kernel 2.6.25.2 - works fine.
But now when I use "smbmount" for mounting shares from my Win9x clients
the system (kernel) tells me
smbfs is deprecated and will be removed from the 2.6.27 kernel. Please
migrate to cifs.
But at least Win9x seems not to like cifs. Mounting via smbfs works
since years, mounting (with the same options) via cifs

2.0.6: HUP/charset/profiles/smbmount/logging
This is the list of problems I had with samba-2.0.6 so far. Can anyone
tell me if he can reproduce them and if he considers them as problems?

sighup/log reopening doesn't always work: connections that are already
active keep logging to the old logs; logrotate rotates/zip the logs and
samba stops logging completely till restart.

linux 2.2.x and smbmount 2.0.5a: Win95 bugfix?
I have become quite confused about the interaction of the kernel
versions and the different versions of Samba and smbmount.
I have just upgraded to a 2.2 kernel. 'make menuconfig' gave no choice
by which to enable the Win95 bug workaround. At the same time, smbmount
2.0.5a, which seems to be the proper one for a 2.2 kernel (it's the
latest provided by Debian, under the name

help - smbclient works: smbmount doesn't
Naturally, you tinker around with stuff long enough and you break it.
I am running Samba 2.2.2 on a Corel linux box and am attempting to connect
to a share on a windows XP system. At one point, this was working fine.
Then I spent time trying to reconfigure my kernel so that I could attach a
floppy tape drive and now I can connect with smbclient to the share, but I
cannot with smbmount. I have

smbmount shares not lasting
I've got a machine running RedHat Linux 6.2 on a P-II400 with 256MB of ram.
I'm mounting shares in the manner 'mount -t smbfs -o uid=user, gid=group
//server/share /mount/point'. The server is a genuine NT 4 server, with SP5
and a couple of hotfixes. I mounted a couple of shares yesterday, and
overnight the stopped working. When accessing the share, I get an error
message that

2.0.05a smbmount problem
I think that I have found what I consider a bug using smbmount 2.0.05a that
came with linux 6.1, and also have a question at the end of this e-mail.
I can successfully mount a shared drive from a windows NT machine using the
following format.
smbmount //computername/sharedfolder /mountpoint -U username%password
I can manipulate folders and files from the linux computer with no problem.

smbmount and win2003 sp1
Hi All:
I encountered a problem with smbmount and win2003 sp1.
Before I upgrade sp1, everything works fine. But after sp1, smbmount =
can't work.
The command and error message are as follows:
smbmount //localhost/share1 /tmp/mountest -o =
username=3Ddomainu1,password=3Dpassword
ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access Denied.)
SMB connection failed
I also checked the release note about the issue, and

smbmount error
I posted a similar email recently regarding this. One thing has changed,
however; I have upgraded my kernel to 2.2.6 (hence I'm now using the samba
version of smbmount rather than the smbfs version).
I get the error "no such device" when trying to mount a network drive.
My command line is:
smbmount "\\\\susangra\\c-hd" -c 'mount /mnt'

smbwrapper or smbmount ?
Hi !
The O'Reilly "Using Samba" book, recommend not to include smbmount
support as it is for Linux only:
"This feature wasn't being maintained at the time the book was
written, so the Samba team made it an optional feature and provided
smbwrapper instead. The smbwrapper feature works on more Unix
platforms than smbmount, so you'll usually want to use

[smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since
smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here]
Hi!
To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux
system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away
in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my
Windows desktop machine to the Linux box.
This used to

smbmount
I installed samba on a PC running SuSE 10.2, using the version from the
SuSE 10.2 repository (3.0.23). All very nice, except smbmount is
missing.
As I understand it, this would seem to be because the version offered
had not been compiled with the --with-smbmount option.
Is my interpretation correct? And if so, how can I fix things? Do I
have to download the source and do my own compilation

smbmount problems when mounted share goes offline.
(using samba-2.0.7 on Debian Linux 2.2.15)
Hi,
I'm wondering how do I get around the problem when you smbmount a share on
a win32 machine and that machine reboots, the mount becomes a blackhole. If
you attempt an 'ls', 'df' or anything that would access that mount point the
program then goes into a state of void and cannot be killed, leaving the
proc open until reboot

Problems with smbmount
I have a problem. When I mount my CD (witch is on WIN97 machine) using
smbmount I do not see all files in all dirs. If dir have more then, let say,
100 files (it is not the same every time), I do not see all files.
This is a problem because on my Linux box I do not have CD-ROM, so if I have
to install some packages I first have to copy rpm files on disk, and then
install them witch is annoying.

SMBMount v2.05a
Hi
I have two different distributions running, RedHat 6.0 and Slackware 7.0.
Both machines are running Samba 2.05a.
When I try the smbmount command on the RedHat machine, it has no problem
mounting the smb service.
RedHat 6.0:
works: smbmount //win95machine/c /mnt/c
failed: smbmount "\\win95\c" -c `mount /mnt/c -u 123 -g 456`
Slacware 7.0:
failed: smbmount //win95machine/c /mnt/c
