pblms with samba 2.X /3.x and NT--W2k
There is OBVIOUSLY something wrong somewhere. EITHER a WHOLE bunch of us are stupider than we thought, the documentation left off a step, or there is something SO blatently obvious that we are ALL staring it in the face and missing it inches in front of our faces. This is exactly what I've had, (BUT I *D*I*D* have it running ok ...) and I STILL havent figured it out yet,... Subject:

join domain problem with Samba 3.0 alpha18
Hi, I've compiled the SAMBA 3.0 alpha18 with all default options and installed well. Then I would join my NT 4.0 machine using the following steps (manual, not On the fly): # useradd -g groupid -d /dev/null -c "comment" -s /bin/false -m machine_name$ # passwd -l machine_name$ # smbpasswd -a -m machine_name$ after that I tried to join my NT4.0 to the Samba PDC, but it failed

try Again?: Setting up net of W2K boxes with Samba PDC
OK: Here's my question. I am setting up a brand new PDC and network of (ugh) between 20 and 50 win2k clients, and want a samba server. I'd like to be able to set this up so all admin is done on the samba server. Is this where I would use Winbind? Can someone point me to a good tutorial? Users will be in different user groups. and must be able to log on with profile from any

Element not found
Hello, I installed samba4 alpha18 and I added a new share named ?test? in smb.conf. When I try to go to my server from Windows 7 client, I can see netlogon, sysvol and test. When I try to access to test, I have an error message : element not found. I can access netlogon and sysvol fine but the other shares I cannot access. I tried this : http://www.spinics.net/lists/samba/msg101309.html but I

Ubuntu compile/install location
Ok, while I'm usually more comfortable installing an RPM or DEB package and having the package maintainer handle all the details for me - I don't get a choice here. The latest Ubuntu 12.04 package is the Alpha18 release. So, I've compiled my own copy of Samba4.01 - and surprise, surprise, it went well. So the crux of the question is: Where should I install it to. [What directory.]

Intermittent failures mapping drives.. need debugging help/sugges tions
There is a problem with a user mapping a network drive. Sometimes he can map it, sometimes he can't. SAMBA: 3.0-alpha18 UNIX: HP-UX 11.0 rsc is a valid account on the machine he's trying to connect to (entry in /etc/passwd, decent permissions on home directory and all parent directories, etc.) The strange thing is sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't

RE: 1st thought: was: help (Still) w2k pro no longer trusted by 2.2.3 pdc
Thanks for the suggestions Trevor. Reformatting in case someone else has problem too: MY COMMENTS are in CAPS to make easier to understand. .*(U said) ..(snips...)... a) I (had) same problem, if I remember correctly, my trusted accounts had names too long (>14 characters) (1) and there was a CAPS issue, make sure all is correct, even if windows forces caps when you're using lowercase.

Trying to debug a WinXP - Win2000 ADS problem.. HELP!
Sorry for the log log file dump, but while looking at some problems mapping drives, I've run across some stuff. Below is a chunk of my log when I successfully map a network drive from a WinXP client to a Samba 3.0-alpha18 server. The thing that bothers me is that it looks like my DOMAIN\USERNAME combination isn't being honored and I'm getting in based on a check to the locally

Roaming profiles problem
Hey all, I've got a few WinXP workstations logging into a 2.2.4pre (CVS from April 30th, around 8 p.m. PDT) PDC, and I'm having some sort of odd problem with roaming profiles. The XP workstations can successfully (it seems) retrieve and save thier profiles to the samba box; however, if I log off a user, say "gary", from one workstation, and travel to the next one, and log in

Re: More on Samba 3.0 vs Samba TNG
Hi, well, I guess that this is something that I need to plan to do :-). I'm developing a plan for a group of updated docs for TNG (and Samba, compared to TNG). Quickly, you're asking for 1) A bulleted list? 2) A Kvivio flowchart? 3) Some other comparison? Could you tell me in general terms: do you need to "sell" TNG to the boss or something? I can't give it to you now.

samba4: move to another network
Hi, we are planning to restructure our network which involves changing IP addresses of a samba4 server and all clients (they all move to different /24 networks). I would like to ask for advice on which steps are necessary to perform this task. In the archive I found a posting ([1]) where someone had problems with changing a DCs IP address and I guess there are probably more/several things that

User not privileged to join domain.
Hello I'm running the samba-3.0 alpha18 (I know it's alpha) but I think this has something to do with my configuration (see below). When I try to join my domain from a computer that has never been on the domain before it gives an error about unprivileged user. I use root/sauron as the admin users with the correct passwords. Samba 3.0alpha18 PDC and winbindd 3.0alpha18 client communication
The question is, does the group mapping on the PDC working yet in alpha18 and is it possible for winbindd to talk to it properly? I am having difficulty on having the group information being passwd to a linux fileserver. Has anyone successfully gotten this to work?
