Samba for a Corporate File Server?
Hi guys,
I'm been following samba for six or seven odd months now in preparation for
moving our organisation over to a file server which is a little more cost
effective than the Micro$oft alternative.
We are currently running with about 30 users on a Windows 2000 Small
Business Server. Do you see any problems in replacing this server with a
linux box running Samba? Is the file

Why is EXCEL SO SLOW on SAMBA?
Hello all,
I have always experienced VERY SLOW response times on opening an EXCEL sheet ever since I had started to use SAMBA
WAY back. I have been hoping that a newer release would fix this one issue but it never seems to happen. Does anyone
know what could be the problem? I can open the same Excel sheet on a Novell server and it opens instantly. I have no
problems with WORD documents. They

strange share violation
hello there !
I have one problem. We have a catalogue on a CD which is being used
frequently so it's copied on a Novell network. But now we have to move
it on a Samba box. But when two (or more) users try to run it, the
second user (and all the rest) gets a message that the program
couldn't access one file. The first user runs it perfectly.
Here is a snippet from a log file:

sonewconn: pcb 0xfffffe00c7223498: Listen queue overflow
Hello,
I updated our main server to 9.2-STABLE today and afterwards I noticed a
bunch of these messages, does anyone know what they mean? I was unable
to find anything on this error message. Things appear to be working OK
so far.

Unable to run application from share
I'm not sure if this is a samba problem or just a problem with the app.
I'm unable to an application from a shared drive "\\ucd01\protel\". I've mapped the network drive "k:\protel\"and the apps ini file points to it but gives me an error message suggesting it can't see the drive. XP can however and I can browse it in explorer.
A strange thing is that when I

Seeking help with Samba shares & OPLOCKS & Quickbooks databases
I thought I had things figured out, but guess not. I have multi-user
Quickbooks databases that functioned fine on a Novell server but are
behaving badly on a Samba share. I have created a separate share for the
Quickbook databases, users are running Win XP Pro, latest patches, and the
Quickbooks application installed on the desktop. It is a multiuser version.
Server is RedHat ES 3, Samba

Performance problem with ACCESS MDB files
Hi,
We are using few applications developed either with Visual Basic or
Microsoft ACCESS based on MDB database files. These applications were
previously running OK when using a NOVELL 3.12 server.
In order to reduce the amount of protocols on the network and other
benefits, we've decided to replace the NOVELL server with SAMBA 19.18p10
(RH 5.2) running on a PII-300Mhz with 96Mb of RAM.

SAMBA and NFS
Can samba connect to an NFS share and then re-export that share so my
windows XP users can connect to it? Basically I have a NFS share that all
of my windows XP users need read-only access to. The goal of this project
is to replace an old MS Gateway Services for Novell server (using IPX) with
something that can do the same thing but over IP. I am pretty sure Novell
and AD can share files

Looking for Large Scale SAMBA Install Success / Failure Stories
Samba Users,
I am looking for a Large Scale SAMBA success or failure story. I have been
using Samba for a long time without any issues, however replacing many
Netware servers with Linux/Solaris running Samba is a different story. Here
is what is running through my mind
1. Novell 4.x causes a never ending stream of problems, including attacking
and flooding the network with NDS tree fragments.

Locks troubles with samba 2.2.2/.3a
Hi,
I just install 2.2.2 in a Red Hat 7.2 with kernel 2.4.16 on ext 3 + lvm.
The problem are the locks!!!!!!
I've 5 users working in .dbf + cdx (foxpro) files with an 16 bits
application. It accesses to the files via DAO 2.0. A lot of times in
the days the users gets 'currently locked' messages when the application
open the dbf's files with read only access!

File permissions 0070 with Office 2010 after saving
I think this is a recurrence of an old bug. Running Samba 3.5.4 with
CTDB on GPFS 3.4.0.6 with the vfs_gpfs module using CentOS 5.6. It is a
vanilla CentOS RPM's with the vfs_gpfs module a self compiled add on.
Running with NFSv4 ACL's.
Basically what happens is when a user saves a file in Office 2010 (no
Office 2007 to test with) with Windows 7 on the Unix side the
permissions on the

peachtree issue
I have a Debian server running samba 2.2.3. We are running Peachtree 2002 (version 9) and we have issues with the data being on the server. First, during the install, Peachtree says that our server doesn't handle long file names. Obviously it does, but we have to install it by acting like the data is on the local machine and then changing the .ini file to point the data directory to the

Paradox+Samba
Hi all... Last monday i migrated form novell 4.0 to Samba 3.0 PDC. The server
acts as a file server for 30 workstations (Win2000) using an aplicattion
that combines clipper (with .dbf files) and delphi (uses paradox .px and
.db). Its perfomance has been very poor since i changed the server. PLEASE
HELP ME, since its in production and i really don know what to do.
