nls question
I'm running into problems trying to use the nls function to fit the some
data. I'm invoking nls using
nls(s~k/(a+r)^b, start=list(k=1, a=13, b=0.59))
but I get errors indicating that the step has been reduced below the
minimum step size or an inifinity is generated in numericDeriv. I've
tried to use a variety of starting values for a, b, k but get similar
errors.
Is there

reading dates
Is there any simple way of reading dates from a file? I'm currently
reading dates in as characters and then converting them to POSIXlt objects.
However I would like to know if there is a way of having read.table or scan
convert a field to a date-time class.

trouble with tcltk (was RE: trouble compiling R on Irix )
Thanks to Peter Dalgaard and Suchandra Thapa for answering my question!
Before I settle on a particular option, I'd like to ask one more question if
I may: Are there any practical advantages to compiling R to 64-bit vs
32-bit?

Andy

Web inteface for uploading?
I was wondering if there is a web interface out there for
uploading and downloading from samba shares? I found the
SMB2WWW but it at the moment does not support upload nor
does it seem very secure. I would like something that
requires authentication. Has anyone done this or is it
even possible yet?

Vedr.: Re: Migration from WindowsNT to Samba
I was thinking of using rsync, since it has the ability of mapping the
written user-name instead of using UID's. Anyone know how this work on
WindowsNT? I've read, that CygWin hasn't the ACL's properly implemented
yet?
Does another "cross-platform" exist, that can map between the written
usernames?

WindowsNT Explorer Copy Removes x Attribute from Unix Source File s
We ran across a strange problem that I'm hoping someone may have already
solved. When we use Windows Explorer to copy a file from a Unix directory
to a Windows directory or another Unix directory, some of the source files
have their user execute bits removed. I haven't been able to see a pattern
as to which source files are changed, and it doesn't always seem to be
consistent. It

Migration from WindowsNT to Samba
Hi
I am about to migrate our corporate network from NT to Samba and Linux. But
I have stumbled upon a problem : How do I transfer the files from NT to
Samba and preserve the ownership? The users will be using the same
usernames as before.
Are there a script or program, that can transfer these rights? Or is it the
hard way? 20Gb of data, nearly 100000 files.

how to browse Windows shares
Hi;
I've installed samba under Linux, and I can see my shares from Windows2000
client machines. I can also use smbclient to see the content of shares in
Windows machines. So I'm quite happy :-)
But what I can't do is to browse the contents of windows machines in a
browser installed in my linux OS. I use Konqueror, and I'm not able to
browse the content of the lan.

Quirks in telnet
I noticed a wierd quirk in telnet on redhat 5.2 that
seems to allow others to verify whether an account name exists
on a linux machine or not. If you telnet into a machine and
use an username that does not exist, you get four attempts
before the telnet session is closed. If the username exists
then you have three attempts before the session is closed.
I know that there are other ways to find

vhost_net_ioctl
Hi All,
What's the role or value of the third argument in the
vhost_net_ioctl function in /drivers/vhost/net.c .
The function declaration is
static long vhost_net_ioctl(struct file *f, unsigned int
ioctl, unsigned long arg)
As per my knowledge,
*f represents the fd of vhost-net device,
ioctl any device request like VHOST_NET_SET_BACKEND,
But what's the
