rpm build difference?
I noticed a strange thing on my CentOS 4 workstations today. Immediately after installing the tetex suite (tetex-xdvi tetex-dvips tetex tetex-latex tetex-afm tetex-fonts), "rpm -V tetex" reports some package inconsistencies: rpm -V tetex ........C /usr/bin/amstex ........C /usr/bin/bamstex ........C /usr/bin/bplain ........C /usr/bin/lambda ........C

.Rprofile error: ps.options
After upgrading to R 1.9.0, I started getting the following error on startup: Error: couldn't find function "ps.options" My .Rprofile file contains this line: ps.options(paper="letter",horizontal=F) If I type "source ~/.Rprofile" after R starts, it works just fine. Did something related to startup change in R 1.9.0? -akop

hosts fail to negotiate 1000Mbps speed
I am trying to connect two workstations (CentOS 3&4) directly using a straight through cat 5e cable with a crossover adapter on one of the ends. Both hosts have gigabit-capable ethernet card. According to lspci host 1 has: 03:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 01) and host 2 has: 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group

booting from a +2TB disk
I have been trying to install CentOS 4.1 on a new server today. The installation went fine but the system doesn't boot. It doesn't even get to the Grub screen. The system has a 3ware 9500 series controller and 12 250GB SATA disks which are configured for RAID5 with one hot spare. I searched on the web and noticed that this is a Grub (and Lilo) limitation. Is there any way around it other

force duplex mode for Apple LW8500 printer
Hello. We have an Apple LaserWriter8500 printer that has a duplex printing unit. The printer is configured to print on both sides of a sheet by default (e.g. if I print a document with unix lpr command, they print on both sides). However, I couldn't manage to make my Win2k desktop to print dual-sided output on that printer although I am sending the jobs to the same LPRng queue (routed through

WinXP. Ugh.
I'm sitting here tonight trying to get WinXP to map a printer on a Samba share. First off, one thing I find disturbing is that XP seems to be aware of Samba servers. When I open a window to one, it says on the window bar "Samba 2.0.7 (nameofserver)" *shudder*. Anywho. I'm trying to map to a printer, and it seems to take forever and a week to come up. I've managed to map

Manual Printer Driver Installations
Hey, I posted a few days ago about how the printer paper sizes are differ from the admin account when they are installed. People at my work are getting pissed at the moment and all they want to do is to be able to change the paper sizes themselves and not have it done at the server Is there a way to do it? I fluked it at one stage and had it working like that, I think I deleted the driver

Slow Samba Printer initialisation, status, and printing
OK, I have been wrestling with this for two weeks now, so somebody please help ! We have an existing Samba Print Server, running RedHat linux, kernel 2.2.19, that runs fine, but is a P133 with 64 mb ram. So we built a new PC, the slowest thing we could buy, a duron 1 ghz with 512 mb RAM. Old printer server is running Samba 2.2.5, new printer server is running samba 2.2.5, and Slackware 8.1,

printing = lprng working?
Hi I updated samba today to 3.0.5. Printing stopped working. The log says: [2004/08/02 14:28:57, 0] printing/print_cups.c:cups_printer_fn(108) Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost - Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt I'm using lprng not cups. Is samba ignoring printing = lprng? I tested lpr it still works as usual. Is there anything else I should check? Thanks. Best, Hans

Printing to Samba 2.0.7 from Windows 2000
Hi, I've recently installed LPRng 3.6.22, ifhp 3.3.19, and Samba 2.0.7 on my FreeBSD 4.1 system. Printing works fine from the FreeBSD machine, and I am able to access shares via my Win2000 machine. I've configured a [printers] section in smb.conf, and I am able to see the LaserJet 2100 when browsing, but on installing it I am unable to print to it. I get en error connecting the printer

LPRng question
<It seems that the print command is trying to find the printer at location 'localhost'. Since this is a network printer it is not at localhost is it?> Yeah, the error messages made no sense to me either! Well, like I said earlier: < The IP address of this printer is 10.1.1.192. I call this printer nero, and have it listed in my /etc/hosts file> Here is a copy of part of my

Printer errors
Hello all, Got SAMBA running on a linux 2.0.32 box, and all is well. Looked over the docs and set up my printer with the (what I think) are correct entries. Basically, what the default smb.conf has. Testparms says it o.k.! And I can print (lpr) locally. Windows sees both printcap entries (inkjet and psjet), but any attempt to pring to them errors out. I then added the print command =

Anyone successfully using a HP 8000 DN (with JetDirect module and IP) with samba?
Anyone successfully using a HP 8000 DN or HP 5 Lsi (with JetDirect module and assigned IP) with samba? Subject says it all. If you're successfully doing this, what configs made it work? FAQs tell how to set up with a print server, but what if the printer itself is the server? Trust me, the HP doesn't know jack about port 139. Using samba 2.0.4 on Solaris 7 and NT 4.0 SP5 with

Looking for some older printer drivers for some HP printers
I am finding myself in need of some printer drivers for two HP printers (HP4550N, HP8150DN) that do NOT have the nifty pretty interface? The ones where it was pretty barebones, no "form storage" or anything. I'm running 2.2.6rc2 and users still can't seem to change any settings for printers, and if I can run the older (< 5e versions) drivers, then people can change
