AW: add user script going Horribly Wrong (tm)
(Oups! I forgot to send it to the list so everyone could laugh about it.
Sorry Vicky for disturbing directly)
Good Morning, Vicky!
Seems your smb.conf is messed up a little.
As I can see you're using security = domain. With this configuration the
smbpasswd-file/feature isn't need at all. Authentication is done encrypted
with the domain user database, not with the smbpasswd file.

Why can't my backup user log in to the share?
I'm trying to work out why I have the following problem, and I'd really
appreciate any help you guys can offer:
I have a samba share mapped as drive o: to an NT4 server, which happens to
be the machine that takes our backups. What I want to do is back up the
data on the Samba share too. Simple enough, you'd ahve thought, and I can
back up stuff from a Windows share fine. But,

Culling dead smbd's?
I seem to be having a problem whereby every time a user fails to
authenticate with Samba, smbd stops responding to that particular client
and has to be restarted.
Apart from 'what on earth's going wrong with my authentication', there are
two things I'd like to know: firstly, is it the main smbd/all smbd's which
lock, and secondly, if not is there any way (on SuSE Linux) to

Strange apparently WinDNS-related problem
We have a Linux box running Samba in a domain with a Windows NT Server PDC.
The samba shares have disappeared from users' machines this morning, and in
the event viewer on the PDC (which is authenticating users) I see an event
ID 5723 with message "The session setup from the computer SAMBA failed
because there is no trust account in the security database for this
computer. The name

'Not listening for calling name'
I'm having a strange problem with samba, 2.2.3a running on an
out-of-the-box SuSE 8.0 system. This is the first time I've set it up
(hence the dumb questions I was asking on here a day or two ago). I've now
worked my way through diagnosis.txt and a couple of odd netBIOS issues with
the NT4 PDC, and at last I have some shares set up that my Windows client
can use quite happily.

NT domains authentication problem
I'm trying to get Samba 2.2.3a (as distributed with SuSE 8.0) working
inside our NT domain . I'm prompted for a username and password when I try
to map the share to a network drive from my Windows PC, but my Windows
logon and the matching password are rejected. Stepping through
DIAGNOSIS.txt and using smbclient on the Samba server itself, I've got as
far as step 7 before things

FW: RE: Backup Samba Using ARCServe
I am running veritas, and I needed to install a UNIX AGENT from veritas on
the linux box. It didnt make much sense to me that I couldn't just do a
backup through the samba share...

AW: create_canon_ace_lists: unable to map SID
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the fast answer.
How can I find out whether this is the NT domains SID?
The interesting is that i can see all files/Dirs without problems in the
Filebrowser of Arcserve.
Thx
Stefan

2 httpd configs
I normally don't do this - haven't got any traction on taroon list and I
want to get a backup going.
I have an RHEL 3 server and it is serving some simple web stuff
(horde/imp/etc.)
I have installed BrightStor ArcServe and I need it to also serve some
web pages. The ArcServe runs on a different port but has it's own
httpd.conf with the distribution.
The last time I did it, it was

Fwd: cgroup OOM killer loop causes system to lockup (possible fix included)
Hi all,
Please find below a complete transcript of the emails between
debian/kernel-mm mailing lists.
I've had a response back from someone on the deb mailing list stating:
====================================
The bug seems to be that sshd does not reset the OOM adjustment before
running the login shell (or other program). Therefore, please report a
bug against openssh-server.

'Security' parameter puzzle
From the manpage for smb.conf:
You may list several password servers in the
password server parameter, however if an smbd
makes a connection to a password server, and then
the password server fails, no more users will be
able to be authenticated from this smbd. This is
a restriction

LMTPs between proxy and backend
Hi @all,
I have a 3 server setup (MX ==LMTP==> Proxy ==LMTP==> Backend).
After upgrading to 2.2.18 I was able to use LMTPs from MX to the proxy
but not from the proxy to the backend:

Ring SYNC appears to have got lost, resending after upgrade
Hi @all,
on Saturday I upgraded two dovecot servers from squeeze to wheezy and
dovecot from 2.1.x to 2.2.5 (compiled from sources). After the upgrade
everything worked fine at first.
On Sunday Morning I recognized these errors (they occured after a reload
for logging purpose on midnight) on one server:

Nessus test issues with open shares
Hi,
My name is Joseph Villa, I'm new to the message boards and I'm also new to
Samba. I just got an e-mail back on our Nessus scans.. Here are the 2 that
are relivant..
1.) The remote host has accessible LOGS$ share.
ScriptLogic creates this share to store the logs, but does not properly
set the permissions on it. As a result, anyone
can use it to read the remote logs.

Problem upgrading to 3.0.4 and ArcServe
Hi,
Since I had upgraded from Samba 3.0.0 to 3.0.4
I have problems with ArcServe to connect to the
share.
Arcserve is running on a NT 4.0 box, everytime
I try to connect to the samba share it says me
"authenticacion failed". When I browse the share
from windows explorer I have not problems.
Thank you in advance

Dyn.load of sharing object with GSL library
Following the recommendation of Prof. Ripley, I have created the Makevars
file with the line:
PKG_LIBS="-L/usr/lib/libm -lm -L/usr/local/lib/libgsl -lgsl -L/usr/local/lib
/libgslcblas -lgslcblas"
in the working directory.
Now I have the code file Example3.c which computes the Bessel function value
(the example is taken from the GSL reference book).
I am running:
R CMD SHLIB Example3.c

No failover from director to backend?
Hi everyone,
short version:
Is there no built in failover mechanism for the director service to
handle a backend failure?
Long version:
I have a frontend server running the director service and two backends.
Due to maintenance I had to shut down one of the backends which caused
connection errors for the users being directed to this backend.
I was very surprised as I expected the director to

OCFS and backups to tape
Hi,
we have installed ocfs2 on Rhat 4. It is being used as a general
clustered file system. There are no oracle binaries or datafiles on the
ocfs volume. So no need for RMAN or oarcle agents etc etc.
The customer would like to backup the volume using arcserve. However CA
are saying that they cannot backup from an ocfs volume.
Has anyone out there got any words of wisdom about backing up
