multiple subnet browsing problem
I having difficulty getting browsing to fully work across two subnets. The
subnets (having private addresses - 192.168.x.0) are connected by Linux
boxes (RH6.1, one for each subnet) functioning as firewall, IP masquerade
and router. On one subnet (call this one LEFT), there is an NT4.0 server as
the PDC (also running WINS and DHCP) along with 50 or so clients and other
servers (NT, Win9x) in

Configuring Samba
I am still having some troubles getting samba to work.
I have installed samba and it seems to be fine from the server point of
view. However, my client can see the server in the Network neighborhood,
but I get network path not found.
The server and the client are on different sub-nets.
Both the client and the server are using DNS to resolve names. Both are
resolvable. They use FTP between

Help a newbie (please!): Samba and WinXP in a non-PDC environment
Hi all... looking for some assistance with my first Samba setup.
The setup: On a small (five-computer, mixed Win2k and WinXP pro) LAN, I'd
like a share on my FreeBSD server to be available for storage. No printing,
no PDC, no individual user directories or password protection -- just a big
ol' slice of storage for everyone to access equally.
I've come close, (the share shows up

Can't reach Samba shares from Win XP Pro
This seems to be common enough problem. I've used a variety of methods
(command line as well as utilities like LinNeighborhood) to mount XP
shares on my RedHat 8.0 running Samba 2.2.7. I get consistent problems
the other way around. Despite a couple of shares on my Linux partition,
I am just unable to do get to it. Network Neighborhood shows my
Linux/Samba server but no shares, nor can I

Can't access SAMBA workgroup from Windows machines
I am relatively new to Linux and Samba, so pardon what may be a stupid question.
I am having a problem accessing my SAMBA server's workgroup from my window's clients. The workgroup (WORKGROUP) shows up in the Windows network neighborhood, but when I click it I get a message that says "Workgroup is not accessible. Network name cannot be found." However, when I click Start, Run

prevent workgroups from appearing in browse list
Hi,
I have a samba 2.2.1a (cvs-06.08.2001) running as PDC for my domain, and it
is doing fine. But in the broadcast domain there are severeal other
workgroups (no domains) with their own Domain Master Browsers. Additionaly
there are always a lot of unconfigured computers not under my control,
which build their own workgroups (e.g. mdkhome, workgroup...).
My problem is now, how do I prevent all

Dial in accounts
Eric,
I am busy trying to grasp the browse list concept. We have subnets and
dial-in accounts. From what I have read you may have to get your Linux
box act as aWINS server and have to dial-up user use the wins server to
resolve names on the brows list. The browse list is updated every 12-15
minutes ao your dial-up account might not show upat first. This has
caused me some trouble at first as I

WINS setup / browsing
I just successfully upgraded a server from v 2.2.8 to v3.0.7. When I
execute smbstatus or swat it correctly shows v 3.0.7. When I browse thru
network neighborhood it still shows v 2.2.8. I stopped samba, and removed
/usr/local/samba/var/locks/browse.dat & wins.dat. Then restarted samba. It
still reports v2.2.8 thru network neighborhood. In viewing browse.dat it
shows 2.2.8. Where is this

subnet browsing
we have samba [mostly] working in a VPN application connecting two Mandrake
subnets using SSH.
if all machines define the same workgroup name, and we define a single
domain master browser, (with the other subnet defined as a preferred,
local, master browser,) and a single WINS server, after a little while, all
shares are visible to all WIN9x machines. this samba stuff is fantastic!

can see my workgroup
I just want to set up a folder on my Linux 7.2 running samba 2.2.1a-4. I
have looked at the smb.conf over and over. Cannot find out why my share is
not showing up. I just want users on my domain to browse the network and
read the folder. I am on an NT domain and the furthest i got was seeing
the workgroup testgrp on my network neighborhood. But when i click on the
workgroup i get an access

samba3: need to wait 3 minutes before login
Hi,
at our local computer pool in the school we've a samba3
server and about 40 winnt-4.0 workstations. the main
problem is, that the workstations have to wait for
about 3 minutes after they started, before a user can
login. in other words: the computer starts and if you
try to login then immediatly you'll get "domain manos
not available" or something like this. but if you wait

Win98 not doing name resolution.
I recently reinstalled Linux on my fileserver (RedHat 7.2), which was
running Samba (v 2.2.1a). Now, trying to reconfigure Samba back to its
original state (silly me didn't keep a copy of the conf file) I've run into
a problem. My win98 machines can't find the Samba server by name, but they
can by number. By this I mean:
On a Linux desktop,

Snap server in Samba PDC domain
I've trawled the Archives for assistance with this problem, but all the
threads I've found petter out without a solution being posted.
We have a Samba 2.2.1a server as a PDC for our network of NT4 and 98
machines. They all get along fine. We have roaming profiles established so
people can move around. All no problem. We have a Quantum Snap 2000 server

Cross-Subnet Browsing Problem
Hi all,
I've had cross-subnet browsing working in Samba in the past, though I
tend to struggle with it each time I set it up. For whatever reason, I
can't seem to get things working this time.
Summary: Only my desktop, not the file server, shows up in the desktop's
Network Neighborhood. (I have left the machines running for several
hours, in case there's a time-to-sync issue

smbclient 127.0.0.1 timeout .... PCs can't browse LInux share
Let's see I've got a network about 10 PCs running XP and 1 running
Linux. I had setup Samba and it was running like a charm. XP pcs
could access linux box through network neighborhood and access 2
shared dir and edit/change files.
Really not sure what has gone wrong. I am using Samba 2.2.8a
I run both smbd and nmbd as daemons. When I run ps -aux they show up.
