NT MD4 password encryption question
Are there multiple ways that Windows clients encrypt passwords? I'm seeing different behavior between two clients. On one, I can access a Samba share just fine. On the other, using the same username and password to access the same share, I get "incorrect password." Looking for the difference in Samba debug traces, I find it comes down to this: smb_password_ok: Checking SMB

Inheriting environment - sshd server to shell child
The sshd server normally builds the environment variables from scratch for a shell process it creates. Except when compile for Cygwin, it simply adds settings to its own set of environment variable settings. A comment in the code says this special case is made because in Cygwin, some of sshd's environment is important for child processes too. I don't run Cygwin (I run Linux), but on my

libcrypto requires libdl
My libcrypto does dynamic library linking (dlopen(), etc) and consequently prerequires libdl. I.e. if you link with -lcrypto, you must also specify -ldl. I don't know how unique this situation is to me, but it causes configure to fail. The symptom is that configure complains that libcrypto does not exist (because it does a test link to test for existence of libcrypto and assumes that any

documentation updates
I recently installed Samba for the first time, being pretty much ignorant of Samba, SMB, CIFS, and Windows. I installed on Linux, which I know a lot about. It took a great deal of debugging and help from experts to get some simple file sharing going because of some gaps in the documentation: It appears that the instructions in the file UNIX-INSTALL won't work for most users. They direct

How to obtain a sequence of dates consisting of only weekdays
Dear R-users, How do I obtain a sequence of dates consisting of only weekdays without the weekends in R? In S, I can do the following: timeSeq(from="12/17/2007", to="8/25/2008", by="weekdays") I tried using looking at timeSequence (fSeries package) and seq.Date (base package) but I do not know if I can specify "weekdays" rather than "day".

"smbstatus" reporting strangeness
I've recently added the following line to inetd.conf, to allow clients to connect at Port 445: microsoft-ds stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/smbd smbd -d 1 That works, but the connections that are started that way produce the machine name "smbd" in the output of "smbstatus". The machines that connect to the main listener (at port 139, started with

scp not tolerant of extraneous shell messages
I spent some time debugging a failing Scp that turned out to be caused by the remote shell producing messages on Standard Output that aren't part of the SCP protocol. Scp from a remote system works by running another Scp on the remote system. The remote Scp writes SCP protocol messages (and file data) to its Standard Output, which the local Scp sees as Standard Input. But it's

Documentation / boolean fix for oplocks = command
In the documentation the "oplocks = yes" option is give in an example, as the default for this parameter. However, I needed to turn oplocks off, and so assumed that the command "oplocks = no" would work. It doesn't, instead I found that "oplocks = false" does. There needs to be some boolean fixing done, or at least documentation should reflect this strangeness.

setMethod confusion -best reference for S4 programming
Thanks I think you have both answered my question (reckon Ill go S3 on that). As an adjunct to this do you know what might be the best reference to the S4 methods current implementation. I have ordered the Chambers book "Programming with Data", and I have a short tutorial-- "S4 Classes in 15 pages, more or less". Have I missed any other useful resources? Stephen Henderson

Samba and Sun NIS
I am trying to get Samba working under Solaris 8 with NIS (not plus) on this. My NT machine and the Sun machine pass all of the diagnostics and I can see the exported drives but can't login. Everything seems fine and I have Samba working on my AIX machines. I compiled with NIS+ support even though I am using NIS and it did not work so then I compiled without support and same error. I am using

Cisco 7960G w/ SIP not working properly
I have Asterisk version 1.0-RC1 running on Debian Woody. I have 1 analog phone working, 2 inbound lines working, X-Lite is working. The problem that I am having is with Cisco 7960 with SIP version 7.2 software. I can make outbound calls and they work fine, I even get a notice that I have voice mail on the phone and it seems to register properly but I can seem to dial to the phone.

losing print driver associations on reboot
Hello all, I've got a strange problem with Samba 2.2.4. I'm able to associate print drivers to printers (raw queue in cups). My clients are able to see that the drivers belong to the printers, and they download them, but as soon as the server reboots, I lose my driver associations and I need to once again specify a driver on the windows end. The Print server was an upgrade from Samba

unexpected.tdb
I have been using samba 2.2.2 for quit awhile running with security= share in my company. I looked into the /var/lock/samba and found a growing file unexpected.tdb. Is there a way to trim it down while samba is running or do I have to start and stop samba? Is this an expected behavior? TIA Joseph Loo

[GSoC] Supporting Efficiently the Shift-vector Instructions of the Connex Vector Processor
Hello, Anton, I'd like to add a small reply regarding this GSoC project that I would like to mentor and I discussed also with Andrei. A good part of our GSoC project is indeed related to this Connex back end that it's not yet part of the LLVM source repository - an important thing proposed in the project is that we plan to perform efficient realignment for this Connex vector

printer permissions
A stupid question. With new printing system (spoolss) how people restrict access to the printers ? It was clear with the old system when each printer was in a separate share. I could assign a list of valid users for each printer share. TIA. -- Yuri Pismerov, Sr. System Administrator, TUCOWS.COM INC. (416) 535-0123 ext. 1352

StrictHostKeyChecking ask
How come "StrictHostKeyChecking ask" doesn't cause Ssh to ask me if I'm OK with a host key having changed and, assuming I say yes, go ahead and update known_hosts? It looks like the program gratuitously runs me through the exercise of editing known_hosts and starting over. Kudos for having the message tell me exactly what I have to delete, though. -- Bryan Henderson
