smbpasswd file NFS sharable?
If I want to make two servers use the same encrypted passwords can I
share the smbpasswd file via NFS? Will updates/locking work correctly?
Is there an alternative? Can LDAP/PAM use encrypted passwords?

nis password file -> smbpasswd?
ive got several hundred user accounts in NIS that i need to get into the
smbpasswd file. since samba doesn't actually use NIS, but can only be in
sync with it, what is the best way to get all these passwords into
smbpaswd? I'd hate to have to have all users re-enter their passwords...
anyone done this before? thanks in advance,

smbpasswd is missing
Hello,
this is my first time writing to this mailing list.
The language which is spoken in the list is english? I'm german.
So please correct me.
I try to install Samba 2.2.2 on a Linux Mandrake8 machine.
Compiling the source and installing it worked well.
at the moment the file smbpasswd is missing. How can I create this
file? Shouldn't the install routine create that file?

Old SAMBA and WinXP....
Ok,
here's a simple question, (I just rejoined this list so apologies if it has
been asked a million times before).
Our Company runs SAMBA 1.9-18p1 from a USS (Unix System Services) on an IBM
Mainframe.
I used to have WinNT 4.0, and I could access Files on Windows Explorer
through SAMBA with no problems.
Now I updated one of my workstations to WinXP Pro., and - no access to the

Access denial
Hi,
My name is Tom Faulhaber. I am the network administrator at a small company
in Providence,RI.
I am running Samba 2.2.2 on a Redhat 6.1 machine on a Novell 4.21 network.
The workstations are Win98SE. The Linux box is being used for the company
intranet (Apache 1.3.22).
Everything runs fine, however I am completely stumped on one issue (so far).
That issue is: network connectivity. If I

Machine trust account reqd in 2.2.3a?
Greetings,
I was reading over the documentation online for using SAMBA as a PDC, and
in the section about creating machine trust accounts is talks about having
to add machine accounts to the /etc/passwd file. The text also mentions
that future versions of SAMBA will remove this requirement:
"Because Samba requires machine accounts to possess a UNIX uid from which
an Windows NT SID can

Strange problem with samba
Hi,
I was using samba 2.0.7 veersion for a while without any problem. This
morning, suddenly, many windows (nt/98) cannot connect the samba server
on our Linux (RedHat 6.2) server. Then, I downloaded the version 2.2.4,
extracted, configure it, make, make install according to the document.
Then I test it by running
./testparm
it lists all of shared folders. Then, I run
./smbclient -L

Wanting to run a UNIX command on Windows shared files
Hi everybody,
I posted the following on 'comp.protocols.smb' newsgroup but got no answer.
I'm now trying this way.
On one side, I have a Solaris 7 box running Samba 2.2.0 and on the other, a
W2K
machine sharing to everyone in full access mode the contents of its
C:\Public directory.
Is there a way to run a UNIX script or command on this Windows share? I

smbpasswd encryption (2.2.3a - RH 7.2 - kernel 2.4.7-10) Win2k
Hi listmembers,
due to a few very short but good tips from you guys and to much hassle with
my firewall (ipchains) I finally got samba running as a server and client (I
even made an update from source, just with normal ./configure, make, make
install after uninstalling the previous version of course).
With "encrypted passwords = no" everything is working fine (except for some

WindowsXP Home and Samba 2.2.3a connection problems
OK, so I looked through all the archives and still can't find a solution.
My server is running RedHat 7.2 with all the latest patches, Samba is also
latest 2.2.3a with domain masters set as "yes" and passwords NOT set as
encrypt, because when I do turn it on, none of the Win98 boxes can log on
(even when I tried to create non-blank password account). All Win98 boxes

Samba password issue
Is it possible to have the users password on the Unix end to be
different to that of the Windows client user.
Example:
I have a Windows 2000 user who logs onto his PC as "fredblogs" with a
password of "password1".
On the Unix Samba end I have the user "fredblogs" setup with a password
of "password2".
I am then unable to access the Unix server, if I reset

user's profile not deleted
Hi,
I would like to ask, will the roaming profile directory in C:\Documents and
Settings\username, will be deleted once the user logs out? Mine isn't. I'm
worried that, for a thousand users, one workstation would have a thousand
directories? I believe those are not local profiles, since it is saved into
the server every time the user logs out.

Windows user not in UNIX db.
I want my Windows account to interact with my Linux user account. My
usernames on both machines used to be the same, but now corporate is
changing our name format (oh boy!). Now that the usernames no longer sync,
Samba is refusing me access to my Linux box.
When I check the logs, it claims that it can't find my new Windows username
in the UNIX passwddb. When I manually add my new Windows

Gigabit Samba
I'm trying to run Samba on a gigabit network.
On the server side I've got Samba 2.2.1 running on an sgi Origin200 with a
gigabit ethernet card plugged into a gigabit switch, and the files are being
served off a fibrechannel raid array. On the client side I have a windows 2k
