Samba as standalone server & problems with saving documents
Hi...
I wanna use samba 3.0.28 (on FreeBSD 7.0) machine just to serve some
shares with different content.
We have several users, and access to a share should be managed by the
unix group a user is in. so if the user is a member of the group
'business' he has access to a share called business. Every users has his
primary group set to 'users'. I implemented that for several groups:

preexec close + Win2K
I have Samba 2.2.2 on Solaris 8 acting as a PDC. I
have written a script that checks to see if a user is
already logged in on the PDC and if so, sends the user
a message (via the SMB message stuff) telling them
they need to log off. I run this script using
"preexec close" under the netlogon share. So, the
user authenticates against the PDC, but then gets a
desktop that is mostly

Samba Swat and win2K domain
Hello,
So I just setup samba and swat on one machine here in my office. I can
see the work group that this machine has created from all my windows
based machines and I can see my windows domain from the linux box. This
made me happy since I am a nubie to this Linux stuff. But that's where
the joy stopped. When I double click on the linux box from my windows
box network places I get an

Extremely slow Samba3 performance with ArcView/WinXP
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi!
I have a user who is running a Samba server to store data
files for his ArcView 3.3 application. Client operating
system is Windows XP professional.
With Samba2 (2.2.8a) this was working quite fine, it usually
took less than a few seconds to load and render one of the
GIS presentations with ArcView.
We then did an upgrade to Samba3 (3.0.20b)

Need local profiles in win2k/sp2
Greetz all,
I am setting up a comain controller for a windows 2000 network and I
think I have everything squared away. The problem that I am having right
now is that all of the documentation/howtos that I have thusfar seen
assume that a user wishes to implement roaming profiles in Samba. We
want to preserve local profiles (local on the client.)
I had seen a posting suggesting to set the

Slow navigation on samba share
hi all,
I have a problem with some windows 7 pro (64) clients navigating on samba
shares. The user wants to open a folder and then it takes a long time
until it opens.
Looking into the samba log of the PC it is filled with this entries (seems
to check for every ldap user):

Access 97 and Samba 2.2.6
Set {
locking = Yes

I've had problems with Access and other MS Office files when oplocks are
enabled, even on kernels that support them.

Samba 2.2.4 + Win2K Printing Problem
Greetings, all:
I'm having trouble working out a printing problem
between my Samba box, and my Windows 2000 client.
Here's the background:
Network:
Home network with a Slackware 8 box running Samba, 1
Windows 2000 client, 1 Windows 98 client, and a LEAF
Project firewall providing Internet access. The Samba
server should only be available to local clients.

security = server problem
I am using Samba 2.0.9 on S1 SuSE box and Samba 2.2.5 on S2 Suse box. S1
is acting as PDC for 98, NT clients.
(logon script, shares from S1, and S2). Users's passwords are stored on
S1, S2 uses security = server and
password server = S1 options in smb.conf.
I have upgraded both to Samba 2.2.8, but the logon script wants to
connect to share from S2, it is
prompted for a password.
I have

Still No Joy In Printsville
First, I want to thank Mark Clement and Steve Litt for their comments. But
as the subject indicates, i'm still not having any luck printing. Mark, I
can't even get output to a test file.
Below is a printout of testparm. One thing that *is* odd, is the reference
to a "printers.def" file in /etc. There wasn't any such file there. The
contents are a duplicate of the

unable to browse/ map drive
I plead complete ignorance.
I have 2 Win98 boxes and a Win2K box trying to access a Samba 2.08 server
running on OpenBSD 2.8. All IP addresses are hard coded with the IP of the
Samba box as the Wins server (see the smb.conf) The Win2K box can resolve
the name of the Samba machine but cannot map to it. The other boxes can't
resolve the name. All are set to the same workgroup.

windows 2000 drive connection issue
I've got a 2.2.3a-12 (Debian Stable) Samba server running on a small network
with 98, 2000, and XP machines. The server is a domain controller and the
computers are members of the domain. We are using login scripts to map the
drives.
I have one computer that is having a weird issue. When the user first logs
on, you can go to My Computer and see the drive fine. Double-clicking on the

Win2k Client <-> Samba Server
I'm having some difficulties joining a Win2k workstation to a Samba domain.
This particular workstation is my work laptop (DRUMMSW01) which normally
operates as a member of a standard Win2k domain called BIZ. At windows
startup/logon, BIZ is specified as the domain.
At home, my Samba PDC's workgroup/domain is HOME.LAN
When I try to browse shares on HOME.LAN with the Win2k laptop, I

PDC and logon script
Hi everyone,
I have a question about the logon script command. I've read and read and
read the man page for smb.conf. In essence, I've duplicated the settings on
the PDC how-to document to create a PDC with a logon script. However, when
I log in, the scrips doesn't run. The only thing I don't have enabled, like
the how-to, is roaming profiles. I'll include my smb.conf for
