I''m Collecting Media Refernces for Ruby and Rails
I''m trying to collect media references (URLs) to articles, podcasts, and
videos about Ruby and Ruby on Rails, like this month''s Linux Journal (

http://www.ddj.com/dept/architect/187203512).
If have such a collections yourself (or just know of some good references),

Certification (was RE: realpath(3) et al)
Just saw this from eWeek.
"IBM, which paid roughly $500,000 for the testing, and SuSE
(pronounced "SOOS-ah") were announcing the certification
jointly. "
The article is here:

ZDNet reviews Samba 2.2
eWeek reviewed Samba 2.2 at :
http://www.zdnet.com/eweek/stories/general/0,11011,2712294,00.html
- they seem to like it !
It's certainly encouraging to get trade coverage like
this, I'm hoping the more people who report Samba use
in their organisation to press outlets will encourage
them to cover more Open Source/Free Software products !
Cheers,
Jeremy Allison,
Samba Team.

New Cisco "Color" Phone
I thought you guys would be interested to know:
eWeek has a short article about Cisco bringing out
a new IP phone: 7970G. It has a high resolution
color touch-screen display with support for XML and
can act as a mini-browser to allow the development
of vertical applications.
But get this: the price will be $995. I don't think
I'll be getting one any time soon.

R-2.4.0 and MS Vista OS - installing packages
I have installed Microsoft Vista Release Candidate 1, and R-2.4.0, on a 4
year old DELL box with a 2.26 GHz P4 and 1 gig. It was a clean install ? R
is the only non-MS program running.
I cannot install packages from CRAN, nor from local zipped files. (I have
R-2.4.0 installed on a Windows XP machine and have had no problems so the
difficulty seems to be Vista not R, however they aren't

Stallman @ NYU
I did manage to dv-tape this from the front row, and thus
got pretty fair audio, but a slightly awkward camera angle.
NYU Media Lab had a tripod set up at the back, and were
apparently intending to webcast the results via real. They
were a little taken aback when I mentioned Richard's aversion
to propietary formats, and thanked me profusely for pointing
it out, and saving them grief.

It's weird to see money-grubbing on an open-source mailing list.

so you'll be putting some of the money that is earned from
such recognition and increased reputation of samba my way,
then, yes, to fund TNG development, yes, without which such
an award would not have been possible at this time,

Luke,
You should be able to tell from my signature that I am a UNIX sys admin
and an Oracle DBA.
I hate MS as much as you do, but I have realized that they control everything,
and we are going to have to live with it. I don't think anyone or thing can
ever fight them. Hell, Bill snubbs his nose at the US DOJ. You are preaching
to the choir. I work in an environment where interns think

Samba faster than Windows 2000 on identical hardware.
This page (of a much longer story) might be interesting :

Netbench results show Samba 2.2 faster than Windows 2000 in
all cases on the same hardware (up to 1GHz processor with 512Mb ram).

Jeremy Allison,

PS. Yes I know, lies, damn lies & benchmarks etc.... :-).
PPS. I wonder if any of the Samba

Re: Sessioned R web interfaces
Frank,
Both RZope and Rho solve this problem.
RZope
(http://www.analytics.washington.edu/statcomp/projects/rzope/)solves
it by using *nix's fork command, which takes as much
time as a memcopy.
Rho(http://rho-project.org) solves it by maintaining
a pool of idling R processes, which it maintains
active & can pull to do a calculation immediately.
Both of these are pretty
