File transfer speed issue
Hi all, I have aproblem with Samba copying (unfortunatly I'm new to samba so my skills are fairly limited). I have a sun box (solaris 8) with samba 2.2.2. Copying from sun to a nt server is fast (as good as you would expect) however, copying from the nt server to the sun box is slow (files copy normally, then slow to a complete halt then copy very slowly). We cannot see anything on a

Newbie (groan... !) Client Problem
I've studied the books, searched the list archives, etc. I suspect there is someone who can just tell me one thing to tweek, so I humbly beg your advice. Situation: I am playing with/learning Linux, intending to replace our two company Netware servers sometime in the next 6 months. At home, I have an NT4.0/SPC PDC, an NT4.0/SP6 docked laptop, and an HP server with RH7.1 or 7.2 (2.4.??

I may also be misunderstanding the

Linux as a workstation client
I'm exploring the idea of using Linux as a workstation OS for some of the users where I work. Most of the issues I've looked at seem resolvable, but I keep running into one sticking point. We rely heavily on shared folders on our Samba server, using ACLs to restrict things on a departmental basis. What I'd need is a way to mount these folders with the permissions of the current

Name mangling bug: was samba bug?
Hi James, this sounds familiar - I believe I looked at a wire trace, and windows is dropping the trailing dots BEFORE it sends the request over the wire. so samba never sees the name foo..., thus does not create it. Cleanup permission settings / traverse folder
Hello, I have problems removing the permission settings on a directory/folder after configuration of a share. My folders look like: /var/folder1/folder2/ I created share1 on folder1 and share2 on folder2. Afterwards, I activated ACLs and set permission on folder1 to domain/group1 and on folder2 to domain/group2. I couldn't access share2 with a user from group2 and I figured out that Samba

Name Resolution, Pinging
I am running redhat 7.3 with Samba 2.2.4. I was wondering if there was a way to use Samba to resolve my IPs instead of having to add all the entries to my /etc/hosts file? For instance, I would like to be able to do `ping acormany` instead of `ping <IP Address>`. We are currently using WINS on a Windows box to resolve the IPs. As of right now, I can `ping acormany` on a Windows system, but

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution ?
I thought I had read a response to this. Went something like this: Word (and lots of others such apps) do not actually deal with the original file. They create a temporary file which overwrites the original when you save the new document. The 'new' file of course inherits the new editor's ownership. Hope this helps you. Basic Permissions Questions
Hi List :) So, I have a folder1, its owner is user1 who has r+w on the folder. User2 is the group owner who only has read access (when I say user2, I mean the group called user2, because when you make a new user the OS can make them their own group). You can see these permissions below: [user2 at host test]$ ls -l drw-r----- 3 user1 user2 28 Nov 2 16:17 folder1 How ever user2 can not
