Is it possible to map shares via Network Neighborhood?
We're running Samba 2.2.2 over an NT network. Our clients use Win95 (for
the time being) and I wondered how we config Samba so they can map the
shares using network neighborhood. We can map fine through MS-DOS, but
when I try, for example, to map E drive to \\nfssrv\ads share via network
neighborhood (where we ARE able to see the shares), it says
E: is already connected to .

How/when do the PAM files get created?
I've been reading chapter 3 of the SAMBA Project Documentation and I can't
find any PAM files (pam.d directory) in my /etc. Is there something I need
to compile in order to have these files? Thanks for any help.

Can anyone help me?
I have Samba 2.0.5a running on SuSE Linux 6.0 (2.0.36) and

One domain w/ multiple subnets. Do a "join" for each subnet?
We've got Samba 2.2.2 up and running fine on an RS/6000 (AIX) machine w/ NT
authentication. We have one domain w/ multiple subnets, and need users on
these different subnets to have access to the shares on this machine.
We've tested from a different subnet than the one we originally ran
smbpasswd on, and it fails (prompting for the passwd to the share...when it
works fine from the

Can we still use Samba if routers have netbeui/netbios turned off?
Samba is working perfect on our main subnet, but it won't for any
additional subnets on this domain. We use NT authentication and my system
is an RS/6000. I just found out that our routers for these additional
subnets have netbeui/netbios turned off. Network Admin. said it's because
they're set not to allow broadcasting (and they're not going to start), and

What is the function of nmbd?
I've got Samba 2.2.2 installed and running fine on one of our servers
(RS/6000 AIX 4.3.3 and using NT authentication), however, when I do Test #4
(from docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSIS.txt) it looks like this:
npssrv{root}#nmblookup -B npssrv _SAMBA_
querying _SAMBA_ on 173.148.200.113
name_query failed to find name _SAMBA_
The test said I should get back the IP address of our samba server. I got

installing samba
Hi,
I just downloaded the latest version of Samba in the form of samba-latest.tar.gz
Managed to unzip it with gunzip but cannot figure out how to install it. Tried rpm but didn't work.
I have an earlier version of Samba (2.0.6) on my SuSE 6.4 machine already.
Can I just install the new version or do I need to do some sort of uninstall of the previous version first.

"hiding" and "vetoing" files (for Samba 2.2.2 & Windows Explorer)
We're running Samba 2.2.2 on an RS/6000 (AIX 4.3.3) using Windows 95
clients. We've tried the "hide files" and "veto files" option in smb.conf,
but when the shares are mapped, we can still see the contents in Windows
Explorer. We used the wildcard for all the contents of the shares (ex.
hide files = /*.*/). The Samba manual only makes reference to Windows 98,
so

xvm no go
Hello all.
We''re a pretty traditional old school sun shop w/a few dozen sun boxes from 1999-2004.
We''re doing a try and buy on a sun blade 6000 with a couple of 6250 intel blades and a 6320 blade, looking to use multiple chassis to do a consolidation, using ldoms and xvm server with xvm ops center to manage it all.
At least that''s our forward looking plan.... to move

nmbd dies as soon as it's started
As soon as I start up the daemons using the following commands, nmbd dies.
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
When I view the nmbd.log it gives the following. We're trying to set up
Samba to work over 2 subnets. Smbd is ok and we can still mount our
shares. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Hiding shares and/or their contents from Windows Explorer
Is anyone of aware of any known problems with Samba 2.2.2 and Windows 95,
dealing with hiding shares and/or their content from Windows Explorer? We
need to map these shares so our application can function properly...but the
shares and/or their content should never be accessible via Windows
Explorer. We have browseable = no for the shares. We also tried the
"hide"option, but the

Functional Tests misbehaving with Globalize
Howdy all
Apologies to the folks subscribed to the globalize list for dual
posting this message...
I''ve got a project running globalize and rails 1.1.4, and I''ve only
recently adopted a strong love for testing. Now my models are 100%
tested (I must note that I do not make use of any translations in the
database yet), and I''ve now started with functional tests before

Samba authenication to Window Active Directory
Has any version of Samba been tested for compatibility with the new Windows Active Directory?
We will be upgrading our NT domain to 2000 and creating Active Directory.
Currently our solaris samba 2.0.7 server is configured to authenicate users from our NT domain controllers. Will we encounter problems with the 2000 upgrade?
Thanks in advance, Cynthia

One of the SOLUTIONS for winbind authenication failures with STATUS_BUFFER_OVERFLOW
I had this problem and I could not find the solution on Usenet that's
why I'm posting - maybe somebody more fortunate won't have to spend
hours and hours to fix this.
Problem: successfully joined Samba to Windows AD. wbinfo -g and wbinfo
-u worked fine, wbinfo -t did not:
# wbinfo -t
checking the trust secret via RPC calls failed
error code was STATUS_BUFFER_OVERFLOW

SIP Authenication (Simple, Digest, ACL)
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
I have been successful in getting Digest authentication to work with my
Mitel 5055 IP Phones, however I'm wondering if Asterisk still supports
Simple authentication? I know it has been depreciated in the RFC, but I
have some phones with don't support Digest. Or how about an ACL?

Ways to use Samba Authenication with apache 2
Mod_auth_apache seems to be only for version 1.2 and 1.3. Does anyone

question NIS password authenication
Fellow Samba Folks,
I am trying to setup Samba version 2.2.8a. I would like to
authenticate the users with their NIS password and not use a smbpasswd file
on the Samba Server. I also want to use the encrypt password feature. The
clients will be using XP or Win2K os. Is this possible or do I have to find
a Windows Domain Server. Thanks

Win 98 Authenication problems....
Well, it's been several weeks since I made a fairly detailed post to
the list regarding problems I was having with the Win98/Samba
authentication process. I haven't received any solutions, but 3 or 4
other people have emailed me saying they have the exact same problem.
Reinstalling Samba 2.06 via RPM seemed to fix the problem temporarily,
but it's returned. The authentication problem
