browse lists and "ghost" machines
Greetings. I'm running samba 2.2.1a on a network that consists mostly of linux servers and win2k clients. There are N subnets here (roughly 18 or 20; I lost track :) and cross subnet browsing is no issue. What is an issue is that machines which go offline tend to remain in the browse lists -- forever. Gack. There are two main samba servers here: one which is used for file/print

specifying ssh port #?
Perhaps this is a lame question, but... is there a way to pass an SSH port # to rsync? At least one way I can do it is to use a small shell wrapper around ssh and pass the port # thru the environment. Just wondering if there is an easier way that I magically can't find. The reason for this is primarily because I find myself having to copy files between some local host and some remote host

Error connecting from XP Pro
Hello List, I have been trying to connect from an XP Pro box to the samba (2.2.2 from RPM on RH7.2) machine. I am trying a simple (!) configuration with just a WORKGROUP setup. Please note that Windows 9x clients are not true members of a domain for reasons outlined in this article. Therefore the protocol for support Windows 9x style domain logons is completely different from NT4 domain logons and has been officially supported for some time. Did you read this document? Let me know what needs to be updated and i will take care of it. Cheers, jerry

adding printer driver to a printer
Hi, I'm using debian woody with samba (2.2.3a-12.3). After installing 2.2.8a everything that worked, still works. What didn't work, still doesn't work. Sharing files works properly. I'd like to share a printer via the samba server. When I go to the printers&faxes share in explorer, no printers are shown. Hereunder is my smb.conf, /etc/lprng/printcap, and the logfile

network. I did read somewhere on the web (several years ago) of a guy who managed to boot windows from the net. With the start of Win 98/ME/ etc.etc it's not posible anymore. I currently use PXE to install machine from the net using bpbatch that works great only bpbatch is not really under developnt and the script language is a bit buggy. host lookup while printing
I was experiencing a big delay in opening printers served from a Samba station on workstations running both Win2k and WinXP. The delay occurs whenever anything specific to the printer is opened. For example bringing up the job queue for the printer and opening the properties dialog for the printer both produce the delay. Cranking up the logging level and combing through showed the delay was

Why does Samba 2.0.6 like other systems but not itself?
I'm running samba on a SPARC20 running Solaris 2.4. I have been running v2.0.5a successfully for quite some time. I've tried a couple of times to move up to 2.0.6 but there seems to be a problem that I can't diagnose easily. 2.0.6 builds with no problems 2.0.6 installs with no problems 2.0.6 starts up with no problems smbstatus returns correct info with no problems smbclient -L

3.0.14a: print driver deletion w/ rpcclient
W/ Samba 3.0.14a I've installed an apparently buggy printer driver (for a Brother HL1670N). From a Win2kSP4 client: - log into the samba server as me (the printer admin) - go to Printers share - right-click on printer, go to Properties - it bitches about print driver not being installed, asks if I want to install it, I click No - go to Advanced tab, click New Driver - proceed to add driver

FYI: invalid 'password server' can cause segfault
While installing Samba 2.0.6 using 'security=server', I at first used a domain name (whatever.epicentric.com) for the 'password server' parameter, before realizing that it should be the NetBIOS name (WHATEVER). An incorrect value appears to cause a segfault (on Solaris). The workaround is "don't do that then" but thought I'd report it in case other people run
