Access lists
I searched tha archives on this and found only an ancient (1998) message... The books I've read say it can't be done (yet). I'd like to set up some shares on Win95 and Win98 boxes with domain level security. To do that normally, an 'Access list' is needed, and that doesn't work (yet). Q1) Has this changed, and if not, how soon is this likely to change? Q2) What do I

SWAT
I was playing with this on my test machine, (redhat 5.2, samba 2.0.3) worked great, and I was really impressed. So I decided to install this on my office machine. (redhat 4.2, samba 2.0.3) and the only significant difference is that on the office machine, I use encrypted passwords. I cannot get swat to authenticate on the second machine. That is, no matter what account, password combination

Mapping of Network Drive through win9x dail-up networking
Hi Thomas, Really Thanks for your advice. I have tried your suggestions but problems still remain. My findings is that some Windows, regardless of version, can map to Samba through dial-up networking but some just cannot. I try to find the difference between these Windows but failed. AT&T T1 Cable Needed!
Hi, I just got a T1 interface for a AT&T (became Lucent) System75 (uses same cards as Definity). I would take a crack at making a cable but can't determine the pinout for a cable and it is not apparent from the board. Asking you guys makes sense as one of you may have one of these systems. The cable has a amphenol male D50 connector on one end and probably a rj45 on the other. I also

Mapping of Network Drive through win9x daip-up networking
Hi all, I have been troubled by this problem for a long time and really hope that someone may help by giving suggestions. I have setup Samba 2.0.3 on a Sun Solaris as a file server and I map drive to Samba by using DOS prompt command "net use". It work very well in the intranet of my office. However, when I dial up from a mobile PC with win98, I try again with the command "net

Windows95 client does not get list of domain users
I have a Slackware 8.1 with Samba 2.2.4 configured as PDC on my network. I have a Windows95 client (OSR2, USB supplement) that can't get the list of domain users for defining a share, I get the message:"You cannot view the list of users at this time. Please again later" Windows98 clients can get the list of users on the domain with no problem, also WindowsNT workstations get the

Persistent locked files & Win95
I often find with Samba v2.0.3 that files accessed via Win95 (OSR2) stay locked forever after exiting the application that used them. I've got an application called Visual SlickEdit (VSE), which is installed on a shared drive. The drive is an exported Samba share from my RedHat v5.2 (kernel v2.2.5) server. Both the Win32 and OS/2 versions of VSE are installed beneath the same subdirectory

Possible bug: 'all new dirptrs in use?'
Hi, Two users on a network runing Samba 2.05a and Win95 OSR2 clients have a problem that occurs several times a month, always near the end of the day. If they open a samba share, it doesn't show any files. The logfile says: [2000/01/10 18:03:06, 0] smbd/dir.c:dptr_create(453) dptr_create: returned 0: Error - all new dirptrs in use ? Apparently bitmap_find() (dir.c, line 450) wraps around to

Connecting from W95 to Samba Share
Hello group; This is a question that has been posted before, but I haven't found an answer in the archives or in the FAQ/docs. I've been thru the DIAGNOSIS.txt, and get stuck on net view \\machname from a W95 OSR2 box (error 53 ...). Setup: Solaris machine running Samba 2.0.0. I can use smbclient to connect to it from various HP, AIX, Solaris, and Linux boxes, and NT 4.0 clients work

Syslinux patch
Out of necessity, a friend of mine and I have created a patch for syslinux to allow it to modify the mbr and partition table in windows. It adds a -m option to syslinux. If given, it will overwrite the MBR of the drive specified with the mbr.bin provided in syslinux, and if the bootable flag is not set on the partition being syslinuxed, it will set it. This was done to distribute with my USB

Using system users/passwords to authenticate
Hey all, I am somewhat new to Samba, but the documentation that came with the Samba 2.0 hints that authenticating Samba users using the system user/password files is possible. The following is a quote from the smb.conf web page as viewed using the SWAT configuration server: "Step 1: If the client has passed a username/password pair and that username/password pair is validated by the UNIX

oplock_break failed
Hi, I am running Samba 2.0.3 on Linux Kernel 2.2.5 (SuSE 6.1) in a test environment with a Win NT server (PDC), the Linux box taking over step by step the file- and printserver tasks, and Win 95 clients. Samba is setup with security=domain at this stage. It just happened again what I have seen only a few times before. When I use Outlook 98 on the Win95 machine and want to access the

Windows Profiles not being placed in defined logon path
Hi there everyone, I recently upgraded to 2.0.6 from 2.0.5a in a hope to improve data integrity (I was having oplock_break problems that would affect the integrity of a lot of Excel files). So far so good with the oplock_breaks (even with oplocks reenabled). :-) However, I've started having problems with the clients' Windows profiles not being placed in my defined logon path.
