RE: Browsing cont'd
Don't forget to add the #PRE after the host info; that way it preloads it.
Create one lmhosts file for the Win boxes, and copy to either
\windows (win9x)
\winnt\system32\drivers\etc (NT/Win2k/XP)
then open a DOS Prompt and type nbtstat -R to flush/refresh
the cached info.
The samba box's hosts go in /etc, /lmhosts go in /etc/samba

rsync error at the end of a transfer
Hi:
I have an rsync server providing four separate areas for rsync clients
to connect to. I only have one client and it is running a backup
script. The nightly backup runs fine through the first three shares
until it gets to one called [webbackup]. This directory contains only 6
files and the first file it tries to get is about 400 meg in size. It
begins to get this file and then the

workgroup but also a domain logon server. The NT box happily accepted
mounts from users originally only known only to Samba.
Everything fine again, but the next day they came in and told me about
people finding complete new mounts on their workstations. To describe
this:
A user normally has

Z: \\SAMBASRV\HISGROUP

Browsing and Mapped Drives over a VPN
Hello All:
I have a situation where I have a Samba box (RH 7.3 w/samba 2.2.4) that I
set up for a client. Another consultant came along and installed a VPN
using SonicWalls between the main site and a remote site. So now they want
the remote users to save files on my Samba box. No problem except that the
remote users can't see my local workgroup or any of the local machines.
Here's

passwd chat problem
I could not find any reference to this in the list archive.
I am setting up SAMBA on an IRIX system. The passwd command does not say "Password
changed" or similar at the end, it just ends. However, if the command fails for any
reason (unable to get a lock on the passwd file, for example) it does report that.
My problem is that I cannot see any way to get the passwd chat string to

Can't get test 8 working
I have just installed the IRIX binary version (2.2.2) on an SGI Indy called "indy2"
which is running IRIX 6.5.10. I then started to work through the tests in
DIAGNOSIS.txt documents and all was well until test 8. To try to get things going I
reduced the smb.conf file to the following:
[global]
workgroup = indy2grp
[homes]
guest ok = no
read only = no

configure not detecting IRIX6
A couple of days ago I sent a message about trying to build 3.0.4 under IRIX6 and
having "make" fail because smbd/quota.h could not find <devnm.h>. I got no
suggestions as to how to work out what the problem was. I have now identified why
the problem arose and that moves me to the next problem!
configure is failing to detect that the OS is IRIX6. include/config.h does not

samba 3.0.4 and -with-ldapsam
I am trying to get samba 3.0.4 to work as a PDC using LDAP with my old samba 2
schema. I used -with-ldapsam when building in the hope that that would be OK.
I had a problem when it came to "net groupmap ..." because samba was trying to use
the samba 3 schema attribute sambaSID. I got round this by setting
passdb backend = smbpasswd ldapsam:ldap://<myldap>
so it appears to

looping logins
I have a VERY worrying situation. This is all SAMBA_2_2_5 with ldap. I have a
SAMBA PDC with several SAMBA servers and loads of WindowsXP workstations. The SAMBA
servers and XP Pcs are all joined into the PDC domain. Logging on the PDC is
..../%m.log so that I get a log for each PC.
When I look at the cpu usage on the PDC system one process is continuouly using 25%.

setsockopt returning Invalid argument
I have built samba 3.0.4 on Solaris 9 and it appeared to compile and build OK. It
starts up and runs with a PDC smb.conf. It becomes the brows master for the domain
and generally seems to look OK.
However, when I try to join a PC into the domain I get "Invalid argument" logged by
set_socket_options() in lib/util_sock.c when trying to set TCP_NODELAY and
SO_KEEPALIVE.

devnm.h problem with 3.0.4
I have been using 2.2.5 since soon after its release and all has been well. I
decided it was time to go to version 3 if possible, so downloaded 3.0.4.
This is on IRIX 6.5.
I have tried to build with the same options as before, except I now have to use
--without-ads and --without-ldap. However, when I try 'make' it fails on
smbd/quotas.c because <devnm.h> does not exist.

I have samba 3.0.4 set up as a PDC and have a problem with using "force user" with
thie following share:

path = /usr/local/samba/shared
write list = usera, userb, userc
force user = usera
guest ok = true
If I try to write a file from an XP system as usera I get an "Access is denied"

3.0.7 and Unable to find the Domain Master Browser name
I have checked the archives and found some references to this problem, but no
answers.
I set up a simple file server using 3.0.7 with
workgroup = SAGEGRP
netbios name = SAGE
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
wins server = ppp.qqq.rrr.sss
etc.
I can connect to a share on the server, but another user can't. While looking into
this I saw that every 15 minutes log.nmbd

Redhat 7.2 & Samba_2_2_4
I have a SAMBA PDC and a SAMBA server set up on IRIX systems and they are working OK
using SAMBA_2_2_3a. I have just installed the samba-2.2.4-2.i386.rpm on a Redhat
7.2 system and can't get it to join the PDC's domain.
Using "smbpasswd -D 10 -j CLUSTERS" shows it is getting no response to "Sending a
packed of len 50 to (<pdc host ip address>) on port 137",

smbmount question
Hi,
I'm running Linux 2.2.2 w/ Samba 2.0.2, using the smbmount that comes with
Samba 2.0.2. I noticed that when I mount shares, smbmount sticks around,
almost like a daemon:
[root@jason /root]# smbmount //XXXX.gatech.edu/XXXX$ "XXXXXX" -U jkau
-c "mount /mnt/cnd" < /dev/null > /tmp/smbmount.out
[root@jason /root]# ps ax | grep smbmount

MuMIn - assessing variable importance following model averaging, z-stats/p-values or CI?
Dear R users,
Recent changes to the MuMIn package now means that the model averaging command (model.avg) no longer returns confidence intervals, but instead returns zvalues and corresponding pvalues for fixed effects included in models.
Previously I have used this package for model selection/averaging following Greuber et al (2011) where it suggests that one should use confidence intervals from

Interactive plots?
Hi there.
I have a matrix that provides place names and the distances between them:
Chelt Exeter London Birm
Chelt 0 118 96 50
Exeter 118 0 118 163
London 96 118 0 118
Birm 50 163 118 0
After performing multidimensional scaling I get the following points plotted
