Severe problem with Samba
Dear All, we are experiencing severe problems with Samba 2.2.0 (with quota support) running on a dual processor (400MHz) Sun E450 running Solaris 2.7. This is used as a central file server for student diskspace, accessed by approx 1200 PCs running NT 4. Up until recently we experienced some, what we assume to be, loading issues with connections during the middle of the day being slow.

Unsolicited oplock breaks
Dear All, we've been having some intermittent problems with students who's home directories are on a Sun E450 running Samba 2.0.6. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is caused by the server, but may be the network. However, I've had a look at the log.smb file and I'm seeing some error messages that I've not come across before: [2001/02/23 18:20:40, 0]

Too many smbd processes running, connections dropping.
I'm running Samba 2.0.4b on a E450 running Solaris 7 which acts as a diskspace server for students, normally everything runs quite smoothly with numbers of connections in the region of about 800/900. Then every now and again students will start seeing their connections being lost and others will not get a connection when they log in, looking at the system shows no obvious problems, except

Windows ACLs (non samba)
Hi all, I'm facing a Windows relative problem, maybe you can help, else please disregard, this is out of Samba scope. Bash script creates each day a folder in share with correct ACLs (thanks to samba-tool ntacl set) that prohibits anyone except Administrators group to modify/delete, Authentified Users can browse/read. In this new folder (named 2011-11-06), 3 subfolders are created with

Old SAMBA and WinXP....
Ok, here's a simple question, (I just rejoined this list so apologies if it has been asked a million times before). Our Company runs SAMBA 1.9-18p1 from a USS (Unix System Services) on an IBM Mainframe. I used to have WinNT 4.0, and I could access Files on Windows Explorer through SAMBA with no problems. Now I updated one of my workstations to WinXP Pro., and - no access to the Samba

smbpasswd file NFS sharable?
If I want to make two servers use the same encrypted passwords can I share the smbpasswd file via NFS? Will updates/locking work correctly? Is there an alternative? Access denial
Hi, My name is Tom Faulhaber. I am the network administrator at a small company in Providence,RI. I am running Samba 2.2.2 on a Redhat 6.1 machine on a Novell 4.21 network. The workstations are Win98SE. The Linux box is being used for the company intranet (Apache 1.3.22). Everything runs fine, however I am completely stumped on one issue (so far). That issue is: network connectivity. If I

Machine trust account reqd in 2.2.3a?
Greetings, I was reading over the documentation online for using SAMBA as a PDC, and in the section about creating machine trust accounts is talks about having to add machine accounts to the /etc/passwd file. The text also mentions that future versions of SAMBA will remove this requirement: "Because Samba requires machine accounts to possess a UNIX uid from which an Windows NT SID can

SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All Some background first I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines 1. A windows 2000 client 2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client 3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on the SGI. When users want to test their application software they ssh from their windows client into

Strange problem with samba
Hi, I was using samba 2.0.7 veersion for a while without any problem. This morning, suddenly, many windows (nt/98) cannot connect the samba server on our Linux (RedHat 6.2) server. Then, I downloaded the version 2.2.4, extracted, configure it, make, make install according to the document. Then I test it by running ./testparm it lists all of shared folders. Then, I run ./smbclient -L

Wanting to run a UNIX command on Windows shared files
Hi everybody, I posted the following on 'comp.protocols.smb' newsgroup but got no answer. I'm now trying this way. On one side, I have a Solaris 7 box running Samba 2.2.0 and on the other, a W2K machine sharing to everyone in full access mode the contents of its C:\Public directory. Is there a way to run a UNIX script or command on this Windows share? I tried using

Imaptest stalls when removing msgs argument
I have had this imaptest[1] stall. I compared this command with what you have on the website and I was a bit surprised that what is on the website is working. What I have noticed is that if you remove this msgs argument, the imaptest stalls. I am not sure if this is according to design, but one might expect that specifying a secs, makes specifying msgs redundant? [1] imaptest - append=100,0

WindowsXP Home and Samba 2.2.3a connection problems
OK, so I looked through all the archives and still can't find a solution. My server is running RedHat 7.2 with all the latest patches, Samba is also latest 2.2.3a with domain masters set as "yes" and passwords NOT set as encrypt, because when I do turn it on, none of the Win98 boxes can log on (even when I tried to create non-blank password account). All Win98 boxes login

Samba scaling
Andrew, Did anyone reply to you on this? By the sounds of things you are running a pair of E450's? We currently use Samba on about 6 or 7 Sun E450's and E250's, it scales very well. I have managed to have about 700-800 current clients connected from Windows 95 and 98, we also have the about 30-40 NT clients that connect regularly. I have found that Samba has scaled uniformly in
